Results 1 Editorial I have adopted the image on the cover to draw attention to the demise of this magazine, ‘The Athletic Challenge’. After many decades of publication it appears that it will cease with this issue. As readers are aware Kate Jenkins & I will be departing Queensland later this month for relocation to Adelaide. Unfortunately, neither I nor other members of the QMA Management Committee have been able to attract a replacement to take on the role of editor for ‘The Challenge’. Basically, it takes the editor about 2-3 days to prepare the publication for printing every two months. The majority of its content, the results, are prepared by QMA’s Statistician, Heather Doherty, who emails them as an attachment which is inserted into a word document template for the magazine. A pdf is created and emailed to the printers. After collection from the printers, another half day or so is spent ‘bagging’ the magazines and attaching address labels prior to a mail out. In all, not an extensive operation. Perhaps, at some stage the magazine may be revived and, as quoted by Mark Twain in 1897, be able to say, “The report of my death was an exaggeration”. It’s not too late to contact me if you are interested in being the Editor. Also, I will cease my role as QMA’s Registrar. The duties will be taken on by QMA member & athlete, Rob Lasker. On a more cheerful note, it has been pleasing to note the high level of attendance at Brisbane Region and Gold Coast Region track & field meets during the year. Whilst QMA’s membership for the current season is down on last season’s final figure (392 v 418 with 6 months to go) it is apparent that nearly all of the new members who have joined are active competitors. The Queensland representation at the recent AMA Championships in Adelaide was the highest for a number of years (excluding ‘home’ Championships) with many ‘first timers’. With the World’s looming in Perth in late October interest in competition should continue at a high level. Remember, the Gold Coast will hold its fortnightly t&f competitions during the winter months leading into the next season. A reminder:- the QMA Annual General Meeting is to be held on Saturday, 25 June 2016. Full details will be forthcoming by mail / email and on the QMA website and in the e-news. Support QMA by attendance at the AGM as well as at Regional meetings scheduled for May & June as reported later in this magazine. A lack of interest and support results in a loss of service. I’d like to thank Kate Jenkins who has assisted me with the production of this magazine and, as a QMA Management Committee member, I’d also like to acknowledge her contribution to the Association as an official. She has told me (often) that she has developed quite an attachment to her ‘old fellas’ (the throwers) and will miss them greatly. Never mind, I’m sure she will find some more ‘old fellas’ in Adelaide. The friendships Kate and I have developed since we joined QMA in January, 2005, are too numerous to mention individually but will be remembered. We will ‘see you’ at the next World’s, Nationals, etc. etc. Viddy Jermacans State, National & International Dates for Your Calendar 2016 QMA Track & Field Championships 3-5 June Townsville Queensland QMA Half Marathon Championships 21 August Sunshine Coast Queensland AMA Winter Throws Championships 1-3 October Wollongong New South Wales World Masters Athletics T&F Championships 26 Oct-6 Nov Perth Western Australia Pan Pacific Masters Games 5-13 November Gold Coast Queensland 2017 AMA Half Marathon Championships 15 January Hobart Tasmania World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships 18-25 March Daegu South Korea World Masters Games 21-30 April Auckland New Zealand AMA Track & Field Championships 10-12 June Darwin Northern Territory 2018 Oceania Masters Athletics Regional Champs 20-27 January Dunedin New Zealand AMA Track & Field Championships TBA Perth Western Australia World Masters Athletics T&F Championships September Malaga Spain 2 From the President Well, that’s the AMA National Championships done and dusted for another year! And what a great event it was. The weather was kind, the organization was good with generally competent officials and volunteers and the program ran mostly to schedule. And of course, the QMA athletes did exceptionally well! I don’t have a final medal tally but I am sure most people’s bags were heavier coming home. In between helping with officiating and competing myself, I managed to see some QMA athletes compete. There were some amazing race finishes with QMA athletes sometimes winning by a millimeter, sometimes losing by a millimeter and in some events winning by the proverbial mile. I know that there were many medals won by the throwers as I kept seeing the QMA uniform up on the podium. It was good to put faces to names of new QMA members who competed for the first time at Nationals. I hope you enjoyed the event and will enter again next year…. in Darwin. Now, as Viddy has mentioned elsewhere, this will be the last edition of the ‘Challenge’ as we have not had anyone volunteer to take on the role of editor. Most of the information in each edition currently also appears on the website so you will be able to find details of programs and results there. The e-news and the facebook page will provide reminders and updates. For those few members who do not use computers, we will make arrangements to post out information to you. Please remember to mark the date of the AGM on your calendar, diary or electronic device and plan to attend and show your support for your athletic organization. Remember, when the Notice of Meeting is sent, we will be looking for nominations for a number of positions on the Management Team. Irene Davey QMA President WHY COMPETE IN PERTH? (Wilma Perkins, QMA member & AMA President) The WMA Championships is an event for all levels of ability but to be good enough to compete an athlete has to be 35 years of age by the 26th October. I am already aware of at least two Aussie M90 athletes who intend to compete and I have already chatted to the M95 athlete coming from New Zealand. So why should one compete? There are lots of excellent reasons and I will list some of these. I do not want any of our QMA members to miss out on this great opportunity of wearing the Australian uniform & competing for your country. It is really special as well as motivating to be in your event and hear someone call “Come on Aussie”. It is a very special experience Your chance to be in an event with competitors who are your age group A rare opportunity with the championships in your own country Your chance to set goals and the motivation to achieve them Your chance to make new friends from around the world The challenge of talking to people who don’t speak your language To be part of the Aussie team and support other team mates To experience the formality of call room procedures To experience your event/s with top level judges and international officials Opportunity to watch some great athletes in action The chance to learn from other athletes Opportunity to watch athletes giving their best regardless of ability or outcome Opportunity to qualify for the next round Opportunity to achieve some personal best performances Opportunity to deal with ‘nerves’, overcome them and compete The chance to be motivated by other and often older athletes Your chance to enjoy the camaraderie from other competitors during your multiple event The chance to be one of the first three Aussies in your age group to cross the line in cross country, road walks or marathon and earn a team medal A justification to have a little holiday in and around Perth If this is your first opportunity to compete at a WMA Championships then grab it with both hands. And if you are interested in the workings of our sport then you can also attend the WMA General Assembly and see where decisions are made by delegates from all the countries attending Perth. See you in Perth 3 QMA Brisbane Region News At the recent National Championships in Adelaide, Queensland was well represented by athletes from our region. It is always very difficult to single out individual Brisbane members but the performances of Julie Brims (4 Gold), Anne Ryan (4 Gold), Maurice Dauphinet (3 Gold, I Silver), Wilma Perkins (4 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze), Heather Doherty (6 Gold), Ian Cameron (3 Gold, 1 Silver), Colin Woods (4 Gold, 2 Silver), Darrin Norwood (3 Gold, 3 Silver), Ian Kennedy (3 Gold, 3 Silver, 1 Bronze), Michael Berlin (2 Gold, 3 Bronze), Argenis Guevara (3 Gold), Glen Dunne (3 Gold, 3 Silver), were very special and will be remembered by all who cheered them on. This season many records were set during competition at the SAF so it is fitting that we have many National champions.
