Medgar Wiley Evers, known as “The Man in Mississippi”, is a seminal figure in the history of the American Civil Rights Movement. The third of four children, Evers was born on July 2, 1925 in Decatur, Mississippi to James and Jessie Evers. He grew up in a devoutly religious home in an era of segregation, when services and public facilities in Mississippi were specified for “Colored” or “White” use. Like many men of his generation, Evers enlisted in the military following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

After his military service Evers returned to Mississippi. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in 1952 at Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College. Acutely aware of the need to fight injustices like segregation and the lack of black voting rights, Evers soon became an outspoken member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Jackson, Mississippi.

On June 12, 1963, Evers was assassinated in the driveway of his home by a white supremacist who was convicted of the crime decades later. Myrlie Evers-Williams, who was married to Evers until his death, has continued his legacy worldwide. Her own advocacy has included chronicling the achievements of the Civil Rights Movement and the importance of continuing the struggle.

You can kill a man but you can’t kill an idea. - Medgar Wiley Evers

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS TO ASSIST WITH COLLEGE READINESS

If you have been accepted to MEC and did not meet the minimum requirement on the CUNY Assessment Test in reading, writing, and/or math, we strongly recommend that you take advantage of CUNY Start or the Immersion Program. Both programs prepare you to retake the exam in the area(s) in which you may have struggled. There are differences between the programs:

CUNY Start The CUNY Start Program allows a student to meet college proficiency in reading, writing and math within one semester with little to no financial impact. CUNY Start is a full time semester based program offered to incoming Medgar Evers College students or continuing students with less than 12 credits for an affordable fee which includes textbooks and materials. Students must commit to this program full-time, Monday - Friday, 25 hours a week. For additional information, please contact CUNY Start at 718-270-6161 or [email protected].

Math Start is CUNY Start’s intensive accelerated math remedial course that prepares incoming freshmen or continuing students to retake and meet the minimum requirement on the CUNY Math Assessment Test. The goal is for students to enroll in a college credit-bearing math course for the upcoming semester. For additional information, please contact CUNY Start at 718-270-6161 or [email protected].

Immersion The Immersion Program offers tuition-free intensive workshops designed to prepare students to retake the CUNY Assessment exam in the area(s) of deficiency: reading, writing or math. If you have not passed at least one of the CUNY Assessment Test(s), then Immersion is for you. Successful completion of the assessment test(s) demonstrates your readiness to take credit bearing courses. The Immersion Program is offered during intersessions: summer and winter for free. For additional information, please contact the Immersion Program at 718-270-4855 or [email protected].

Both Programs allow students to SAVE money by not using financial aid funds or out-of-pocket expense for non-credit remedial courses. Tuition for remedial courses is approximately $1000 per course.
