The USEF Action Plan update, released yesterday, reflects this strengthened mandate. In addition to the updated face mask/face covering requirement, USEF expects that: All participants will adhere to, and all competition organizers will enforce, social distancing requirements at all times while on competition grounds. Competition organizers will restrict access to competition grounds in accordance with state and local travel and quarantine restrictions. During a competition, Stewards and Technical Delegates will report non- compliance to competition management, and individuals who continue to demon- strate non-compliance with social distancing or mask/face covering requirements will be promptly removed from the competition grounds by competition manage- ment. Stewards and Technical Delegates will document and include in their report to the USEF all incidents of non-compliance, so that USEF can address any deficien- cies. Riikka-Liisa Räbinä BENCHMARKING FINNISH AND IRISH EQUESTRIAN TOURISM Thesis Kajaani University of Applied Sciences School of Tourism Tourism Spring 2010 THESIS ABSTRACT School Degree Programme School of Tourism Tourism Author(s) Riikka-Liisa Räbinä Title Benchmarking Finnish and Irish Equestrian Tourism Optionalvaihtoehtiset Professional Studies Supervisor(s) Anneli Karppinen Commissioned by Date Total Number of Pages and Appendices Spring 2010 47 The purpose of this thesis was to benchmark Finnish and Irish equestrian tourism. One of the goals was also to examine the current status of equestrian tourism in Finland, as well as the use of the Finn- horse in equestrian tourism services. Improvement suggestions were created based on research about Irish equestrian tourism as well as the Irish Draught Horse and the Irish Sport Horse. There was no commissioner for the thesis. The topic arose from personal interest in equestrian tourism and the growing importance of the Finnhorse as part of the industry. The first part of the thesis comprises the theoretical background. It includes different aspects of eques- trian tourism in Finland and in Ireland. The current status of equestrian tourism in Finland and the safety guidelines created by the Finnish Consumer Agency are discussed in detail. The history, current status, and different usages of the Finnhorse are discussed. Also the Irish Draught Horse and the Irish Sport Horse as Irish horse breeds are elaborated. The second part is the empirical part. It gives suggestions for improving equestrian tourism in Finland and increasing the use of the Finnhorse in tourism related services. The suggestions are based on strat- egies and actions implemented by different organizations in Ireland.

  • Driving a Morgan Offers Endless Possibilities
Magazine Articles Driving a Morgan Offers Endless Possibilities Written by Suzy Lucine “Morgans are a very intriguing breed,“ said Suzy Stafford, whose Morgan mare, PVF Peace of Mind, was the 2016 USEF International Horse of the Year. “They have many natural attributes that lend them to be exceptional driving horses. The breed is a strong, powerful type with a trainable attitude and exceptional work ethic. The breed’s power to size ratio still baffles me. “Morgans were bred to drive,” Suzy explained. “Years of breeding traits that lend themselves to be good at the job of driving are very evident.” When a little bay stallion was foaled in 1789 in Springfield, Mass., you would be hard-pressed to find anyone in the area who believed he would become a prolific sire and change the face of American equine history. Justin Morgan, a teacher, composer and horseman, acquired the colt and named him Figure. Later, Figure became known by his owner’s name, and went on to become the foundation of the Morgan horse breed. Justin Morgan made a name for himself by out trotting, out pulling and out running the best horses the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions had to offer. However, his everlasting contribution to the breed came with his ability to pass his distinguished characteristics on to his offspring and several generations to follow. During this era, equine enthusiasts were looking for horses that were gentle, easy to train, and were sound with natural ability and agility. Soon people were looking for horses that also looked good, and those rich with Morgan blood fit the bill.

  • “It Takes a Certain Amount of Courage on the Part of Both the Horse and the Rider, Particularly, When the Wall Is Big.” a Record That Endures
By Molly Sorge Photography Jump Media LLC The puissance is the very essence of show jumping boiled down to one class — how high can your horse jump? “It’s the roots of the sport,” explained McLain Ward, two- time Olympic team gold medalist. “In the past, it was often the most important class of the show, especially in the 1950s and ‘60s. When the grand prix started to become the premier event in the ‘70s, and through the ‘70s and early ‘80s, the puissance often had as much prize money, if not more than the grand prix.” The puissance class takes place over a maximum of five rounds, with the first round consisting of four-to-six large single obstacles, including the puissance wall, which is traditionally a solid wall built of wooden boxes painted to look like stone or brick. The puissance differs from the high jump, which is an obstacle of angled poles rather than a solid vertical wall. The puissance wall starts at 4-foot, 6-inches and is raised after each round. The other jumps on the course are also gradually removed as the rounds go on, until there are only two jumps — an oxer and the puissance wall. Riders who jump the wall clean progress to the next round and the horse-and-rider combination clearing the wall at the greatest height wins. In the event that multiple horses have cleared the wall in the fifth round, the riders share first prize, unless they want to continue and challenge the world record. In recent years, the popularity of the puissance class has faded a bit, as the grand prix class has become the highlight of most show schedules.
