Yom Yerushalayim: The Reunification of A People And A Past By Elana Yael Heideman There has been a continuous Jewish presence in Jerusalem, and our connection to and passion for the city has been preserved as a memory by Jewish people around the world. Though the modern state of Israel was born in 1948, for years Jews were cut off from the Old City of Jerusalem and the Kotel, the Western Wall - the heart of the Jewish people, the axis of our collective national and historical identity, the center of our faith, and the focus of the history of the Jewish people for generations. Throughout Israel and around the world, on the 28th of the Hebrew month of Iyar, we celebrate being reunited with the city of Zion, Yerushalayim Shel Zahav, our only Jerusalem. History shows that it was the Jews who have made Jerusalem important to the world. In 1004 BCE, King David established Jerusalem as the capital of the Kingdom of Israel (2 Samuel 5:6). Following the first exile, he proclaimed: "If I forget you Jerusalem, let my right hand lose its strength. Let my tongue cling to my palate if I fail to recall you, if I fail to elevate Jerusalem above my highest joy." Three times a day, or even just twice a year, for thousands of years, Jews turn their faces towards Jerusalem and the Temple Mount and pray for a return to Jerusalem and to Tzion. -

Dear Friends, Regarding material published in Israel I occasionally prefer to mention the more popular material and not just, say, archaeology at Lachish. I contend that sometimes in music CDs, museum catalogs or even Haggadot we can often learn so much from language to social trends, influences and history. A new significant CD has come out with Yossi Banai Reading Tehillim (Psalms) - (or in Hebrew.... Yossi Banai Koreh Tehilim) . This of course is of multi - disciplinary interest and defies categorization. The blurb on the back of this boxed set reads: "The 19 Psalms read by Yossi Banai, one of the greatest Israeli actors, to original music by Jonathan Bar Giora, and the book of Psalms, presented to the modern Hebrew reader by Dr. Moshe Anat, illuminate the sublime art of the Hebrew poets who wrote The Book of Psalms thousands of years ago." (Tov, so the english blurb isn't great but you get the picture.) But this boxed set is impressive - it includes the CD, with an English and Hebrew listing of the tracks and a hardcover copy (about 8.5" x 6") of Tehilim in Hebrew. This would not only make a wonderful educational tool but also a beautiful present. Cat. # 55797 $24.00 'To Fall in Love with Israel,' (Lehit'ahev be-'Erets Yisrael) is a new book of walks in Israel by the author (Israel researcher) Ofer Regev, and includes history with discovery by focusing not on the wars and battles associated with places but rather, love stories. For example in Jerusalem the life and love of Eliezer Ben Yehuda and the house in Talpiot. -

GUIDE TO THE ARCHIVAL RECORD GROUPS AND COLLECTIONS Jerusalem, July 2003 The contents of this Guide, and other information on the Central Zionist Archives, may be found on Internet at the following address: http://www.zionistarchives.org.il/ The e-mail address of the Archives is: [email protected] 2 Introduction This edition of the Guide to the Archival Record Groups and Collections held at the Central Zionist Archives has once again been expanded. It includes new acquisitions of material, which have been received recently at the CZA. In addition, a new section has been added, the Maps and Plans Section. Some of the collections that make up this section did appear in the previous Guide, but did not make up a separate section. The decision to collect the various collections in one section reflects the large amount of maps and plans that have been acquired in the last two years and the advancements made in this sphere at the CZA. Similarly, general information about two additional collections has been added in the Guide, the Collection of Announcements and the Collection of Badges. Explanation of the symbols, abbreviations and the structure of the Guide: Dates appearing alongside the record groups names, signify: - with regard to institutional archives: the period in which the material that is stored in the CZA was created. - with regard to personal archives: the birth and death dates of the person. Dates have not been given for living people. The numbers in the right-hand margin signify the amount of material comprising the record group, in running meters of shelf space (one running meter includes six boxes of archival material). -

An impressive number of Israeli jazz performers have received widespread exposure and acclaim over the last twenty years. Artists such as Omer Avital (bass), Anat Cohen (woodwinds), Avishai Cohen (bass) among many others have successfully established themselves on a global scale, creating music that melds various aspects of American jazz with an array of Israeli, Jewish and Middle-Eastern influences and those from numerous other non- Western musical traditions. While each musician is developing his or her own approach to musical transculturation, common threads connect them all. Issue #73 Winter 2008 Lars Bloch Interview (part 3) Legend of the Incas Buffalo Bill in Rome Frank Brana Interview Latest DVD reviews WAI! #73 THE SWINGIN’ DOORS Well summer is over and it’s time for the fall and winter seasons to begin. Life goes into hibernation as we sit around the TV set more and more during the colder weather. But wait, I just received a postcard from my old buddy Neil Summers who says he just received a call from Terence Hill and they will be filming a new western in Santa Fe, New Mexico starting October 9th. The new made for Italian TV film is called “Doc West” and features Hill as a former doctor who is now a traveling gambler trying to forget a botched operation on a small boy who he feels died by his hands. Also starring is Paul Sorvino as the town’s sheriff. So much for a nice quiet winter, we’ll keep you posted on all the developments as well as Neil’s updates. Always nice to see a Spaghetti western being made again and Neil says if this generates enough interest it will become a weekly series. We have a welcome article by Italian scholar Armando Rotondi concerning a true event wherein Buffalo Bill was challenged by the ‘Butteri” (Italian cowboys). These actual events became the basis for the rare 1949 film “Buffalo Bill in Rome” starring Enzo Fiermonte. I hope to have more of these types of documents and reviews in future issues. My good friend, researcher and writer, Tom Prickette, took the time to watch, translate from the German text and submit a review for the recently released German language KOCH Media DVD of “The Legend of the Incas”. -

She would also stand at her big stove with chopsticks and deftly pluck tempura vegetables out of a pot of hot oil…like a chopstick ballet. She immigrated to Canada from Okinawa at the age of 19, facing an arranged marriage with a man she barely knew, and a new country with an unknown language and customs. She saw Okinawa only once more, 40 years later, and never saw her parents again. One night, long after my grandmother had died, I had a dream about her. I saw her as a young woman dressed in a kimono, looking lovely but sad; and I wanted to somehow comfort her. There was a jewelry box sitting on a nearby table, so I opened it and took out a strand of grey pearls to place around her neck. As I reached out, the strand broke and every pearl scattered on the floor. I believe those grey pearls represented moments in my grandmother’s life, forged and beautified by hardship and struggle, which I was to collect and remember. Memories are powerful, and in remembering, I would find foundations, roots and connections that would bring luster and depth to my own life and the lives of future generations. -

Music in Conflict: Palestine, Israel, and the Politics of Aesthetic Production Nili Belkind Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree Of Doctor of Philosophy In the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Nili Belkind All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Music in Conflict: Palestine, Israel and the Politics of Aesthetic Production Nili Belkind This is an ethnographic study of the fraught and complex cultural politics of music making in Palestine-Israel in the context of the post-Oslo era. I examine the politics of sound and the ways in which music making and attached discourses reflect and constitute identities, and also, contextualize political action. Ethical and aesthetic positions that shape contemporary artistic production in Israel-Palestine are informed by profound imbalances of power between the State (Israel), the stateless (Palestinians of the occupied Palestinian territories), the complex positioning of Israel’s Palestinian minority, and contingent exposure to ongoing political violence. Cultural production in this period is also profoundly informed by highly polarized sentiments and retreat from the expressive modes of relationality that accompanied the 1990s peace process, strategic shifts in the Palestinian struggle for liberation, which is increasingly taking place on the world stage through diplomatic and cultural work, and the conceptual life and currency Palestine has gained as an entity deserving of statehood around the world. The ethnography attends to how the conflict is lived and expressed, musically and discursively, in both Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) of the West Bank, encompassing different sites, institutions and individuals. I examine the ways in which music making and attached discourses reflect and constitute identities, with the understanding that musical culture is a sphere in which power and hegemony are asserted, negotiated and resisted through shifting relations between and within different groups. -

C’est donc en réalité 104 timbres-poste auxquels s’ajoutent 19 timbres-taxe qui sont répertoriés sur ces feuilles d’album. Pour aider le philatéliste dans son travail d’identification, les différents aspects de surcharges ont été ajoutés. En complément, une page a été prévue pour les timbres de la Poste consulaire française de Jérusalem (1948). Édité sur papier fort, il est fourni avec un lot de pochettes transparentes 0 x 4 pour l’ensemble des timbres de petit format. Les pochettes pour la série Occupation et Mandat britannique (1918 - 1948) des Pictorials ne sont pas fournies. -
