The Trustees of the Australian Museum have the bonor to submit to your Rxeellency this their Eighth Annual Report. 2. The Museum has been open to the public daily (Sundays excepted), during the pa.,~ year, and h ~s Lecn visited by 19,905 pe rson~ . 3. The system of exchanging specimens of natural bi~tory with the princ:pal Foreign Museums is still fostered by the Trustees, who have received tho r.,llo\Viug valuable collec tions during the past yenr :- From the Museum of Natural History nt IJnmburg :-G ~<pccics of mammals; 30 ~pccics of birds, and a collection of colcoptcrous insects, comprising 315 specimens and 15G sp'!cies. From the National Museum of the Netherlands, at Lcyden :-2 species of mammals; 81 species of birds; 4 birds' nests and 9 eggs. Jlron1 the Museum of Natural Ilistory at Brunswick :-83 specimens, including 23 species of birds, and a c,,llection of colcopterous in sect~, comprising 202 species. 4. Numerous donations have been received during the year, a list of which, with the names of the donors, is appended. (Appendix No. 2 .) 5. ~fany valuable works, purchased out of the Endowment Fund, have been added to tho ~luseum Library, a list of which is appended. (Appendix No. 3.) G. It is with deep regre~ that the Trustees have to rPport tbo loss which the Museum has sustained this year, through the death, in August last, of their talented Curator and Secretary, l\Ir. S. R. Pittard. In connection with tlais melancholy event, the Trustees have much satisfuction in ackno\VIedging the liberality of the Government in permitting the unexpended portion of the vote for the Curator's salary to be applied towards the provifiion of a passage to England for i\Irs. Pittard and her children. 7. The Trustees have entered into a corre~pondonce with the Government, with a view of securing the services of an able succoesor to the late 1\Ir. Pittard. Pending the arrangements necessary for this purpose, they have appointed J\Ir. Gernrd Krefft, Acting Curator and Secretary. 8. Two experienced taxidermists have been occupied during the yenr in preparing and mounting specimens, and iu cleaning and preserving frotu decay the collections already displayed for public inspection. 79--A 9. 2 AUSTRALIAN 1\lUSEU~f. 9. The Trustees have to record the retirement of Sir William Macarthur, and the election of Willi:~m Maclcay, Esq, l.\1.P., to fill t~c place on the Board vacated by Hia. Excellency Sir W. T. Denison, K.O.B. 10. The liberality of the Legislature has en11bled the Trustees to purchase, for the aum of £200, a highly instructive mineralogical and geol ogic<~! collection, for the display of wh ich arrangements are now being made. It is ~be intention of the Trustees shortly to publish a Catalogue of these collections, which will enable students to compare our native minerals and formations with tho110 which occur in other parts of the Globe. 11. The valuable series of casta of fossils, presonted by the British Museum some years ago, haa been unpacked, and is now in part exhibited to the }'ublic. 12: The Trustees, thinking it desirable to enhrgc the collections in tho l\Iuseum as muoh ns possible, have purchased a number of specimens dul'ing the year, of wbioh those not hitherto exhibited have been ndded to the collection; and such specimens as could be spared have been forwarded to other Mu,eums, for the purpose of exchange. 13. The Truateea have 'bo sa~isfaotion of reporting tbnt tho additions to the l\Juseum, for which tho Legialature voted the sum of £10,000, ore now in vrog r es~:~. The plnn nod general arrangements having been designed by the Colonial Architect, after consultation with the Trustees, were approved by the (l overnmcnt. Tcndcn were then i nvi tcd for the construction of tho building as high as tbc first story, and one f,n· £9,300 ncocptcd. It is this portion of the building that • now in course of erection. For the completing of the upper part and the. together with the ioternnl fitting~, n. further sum of .£10,000 will be necessary. As this n;t&itional expenditure is essential towards completing the portion of the building now in hand, the Trustees take leave to urge on the Government the occe;sity of obtaining from the Legislature, a vot~ for the further sum required. 14. A ppendb: No. 1 contains an abstract of the receipts and payments of the Trustees, on behalf of the l\Juseum, for the year ending December 31, 1861. 15. Appendix No. 2 contains a liot of the various donations during the same year, wi th the namea of the donors. 16. Appendix No. 3 contains nlist of books purchased for the Museum J,ibrary. 17. The Trustees have the honor to submit this their Report for the vear one thousand eight hundred and sixty-one, and in testimony thereof, hove caused their ~orpornte Seal to be hereunto affixed, this twenty-third day of 1\Joy; one thou~nnd eight hundrecl nnd sixty-two.
