Palaeonlologia Polonica, 50, 3—94, 1990. Taxonomic and ecological analysis of the ammonite assemblages, as well as their general paleogeographical setting, indicate that the Albian deposits in the Polish part of the Central European Basin accumulated under shallow or extremely shallow marine conditions, while those of the High-Tatra Swell were deposited in an open sea environment. The Boreal character of the ammonite faunas in the epicontinental area of Poland and the Tethyan character of those in the Tatra Mountains are evident in the composition of the analyzed assemblages. -
Geology and the Landscape of the North Wessex Downs Factsheet
Factsheet Geology and the Landscape of the North Wessex Downs The majority of the North Wessex Downs is underlain by chalk resulting in the beautiful gentle rolling topography which is so characteristic of the North Wessex Downs. The area is influenced by geological formations from the Cretaceous, Palaeogene and Quaternary periods. There is also a direct link between the building materials used in the AONB and the local underlying geology. This is explored in the leaflet 'Diversity in Stone' Geological History of the North Wessex Downs Lower Cretaceous (145 – 99 million years ago) Only the top most part of the Lower Cretaceous (the Gault Clay and the Upper Greensand) are found in the AONB. The Gault Clay is restricted to a narrow band marking the foot of the Downs on the northern margin. This blue-grey mudstone has historically been extracted from the Swindon and Devizes area for brick making. The junction between the Gault Clay and the overlying Upper Greensand is marked on the northern edge of the AONB by a spring line which gave rise to the development of the villages such as Cherhill and Uffington. The sands and silts of the Upper Greensand are rich in a mineral called glauconite, giving them their green colour. As well as tracing the northern scarp of the AONB the Upper Greensand is also seen at the surface in the Vale of Pewsey, as a result of the uplift of the basin. Towards the top of the Upper Greensand is a bed known as the Malmstone. This is a hard sandstone composed of siliceous spicules held together with a silica rich cement. -

A 480 m section of marls with widely separated levels of nodular limestone in the Fahdene Formation north of Bou Khadra in Tebessa Province, northeastern Algeria, spans the Lower/Middle Cenomanian boundary. A total of 30 ammonite species are present, of which two: Forbesiceras reversum and Calycoceras (Newboldiceras) algeriense are new. The fauna allows recognition of the Northwest European upper Lower Cenomanian Mantelliceras dixoni Zone, the succeeding lower Middle Cenomanian Cunningtoniceras inerme Zone, the Acanthoceras rhotomagense Zone and its subzones of Turrilites costatus and Turrilites acutus. The sequence of index species occurs in the same order in both north-eastern Tunisia and the Southerham Grey Pit in Sussex (and indeed elsewhere in North- west Europe), indicating these to be robust assemblage zones and subzones that can be recognised on both the north and south sides of the Tethys. -

Wealden Greensand Area profile: Supporting documents Introduction National Character Areas map As part of Natural England’s responsibilities as set out in the Natural Environment 1 2 3 White Paper , Biodiversity 2020 and the European Landscape Convention , we are North revising profiles for England’s 159 National Character Areas (NCAs). These are areas East that share similar landscape characteristics, and which follow natural lines in the landscape rather than administrative boundaries, making them a good decision- Yorkshire making framework for the natural environment. & The North Humber NCA profiles are guidance documents which can help communities to inform their West decision-making about the places that they live in and care for. The information they contain will support the planning of conservation initiatives at a landscape East scale, inform the delivery of Nature Improvement Areas and encourage broader Midlands partnership working through Local Nature Partnerships. The profiles will also help West Midlands to inform choices about how land is managed and can change. East of England Each profile includes a description of the natural and cultural features that shape our landscapes, how the landscape has changed over time, the current key London drivers for ongoing change, and a broad analysis of each area’s characteristics and ecosystem services. Statements of Environmental Opportunity (SEOs) are South East suggested, which draw on this integrated information. Key words: Early Cretaceous, Albian Stage, ammonite zonation, European and Tethyan faunal provinces Although the so-called 'standard' ammonite zonation of the Albian contains index species which occur in the Tethyan province, the scheme largely reflects the faunal succession in the European fau• nal province with its endemic sonneratiinid and hoplitinid faunal elements. Workers in the Tethyan province, stretching from South America in the west to Australia in the east, including southern Africa, Madagascar and India, face problems in the correlation of their successions with this so-called 'standard' scheme. There are other problems in that the succession of hoplitinid ammonites used in the biostratigraphy of European Albian sediments allows a far more detailed zonation to be made than in the case of some of the longer time-ranging Tethyan forms. This paper comments on propos• als made recently for the delimiting of the base of the Albian Stage, and the Middle and Upper Sub- stages, based on ammonite faunas. New information which affects the Albian ammonite zonation in the European faunal province and its correlation with the Tethyan province is discussed. The current hierarchical framework of zones and subzones used in the European faunal province may prove to be unsatisfactory in interprovincial correlation and particularly if the lower boundary of the Albian Stage was placed within the current Leymeriella tardefurcata ammonite Zone, instead of at its base. -

Ventnor No. 2 Borehole, located near Ventnor, Isle of Wight, penetrated the 16 17 18 basal part of the Chalk Group and the Selborne Group before terminating in the upper part of 19 20 the Lower Greensand Group (Sandrock Formation). The borehole was examined for 21 22 23 Foraminifera, and although they were not seen in the Sandrock Formation and Monks Bay 24 25 Sandstone Formation, the remainder of the borehole yielded moderately low diversity 26 27 28 assemblages dominated by agglutinated species. Foraminiferal zones 3 to 6 (H dentatus to M. 29 30 fallax/M. rostratum macrofaunal zones) were identified in the Gault Formation and zones 6 31 32 (lower) to 6a (M. fallax/M. rostratum to A. briacensis macrofaunal zones) were identified in 33 34 35 the Upper Greensand Formation. J., CHAHIDA M. R. and DJAFARIAN M. A.: Cenomanian cepha lopods from the Glauconitic Limestone southeast of Esfahan, Iran. Acta Palaeont Polonica, 24, I, 3-50, April 20, 1979. The Glauconitic Limestone of the area southeast of Esfahan yields a rich Ceno manian cephalopod fauna of Boreal aspect, including species of Anglonautllus, Stomohamites, Sciponoceras, Idiohamites, Ostllngoceras. Mariella, Hypoturrllites. Turrllites, Scaphites, Puzosia, Austiniceras, Hyphoplltes, Schloenbachia. Mantelll ceras, Sharpeiceras and Acompsoceras, most of which represent new records for the area. The age of this fauna Is unequivocally Lower Cenomanian, and can be correlated in detail at a distance of 5000 km with parts of the northwest European Hypoturrll!tes carcitanens!s and Mante!liceras saxbit Zones. The material studied includes none of the Upper Albian, Middle and Upper Cenomanian elements re corded from the unit by previous workers. The fauna Is numerically dominated by acanthoceratids, in marked contrast to the Schloenbachia-dominated faunas of northwestern Europe. This suggests the area lay In the southern parts of the Boreal Realm, where Schloenbachia Is known to become progressively scarcer, as Is supported by proximity to the Zagros line marking the juncture of Asian and Arabian plates.
