Amen. 5 Sit Second Lesson Luke 2. 1-20 In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’ When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’ So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. The name All Saints Church was adopted in 1843 and on June 10, 1846, the first service was held in the first Episcopal building on Pearl Street. A fire destroyed that building on April 7, 1874. A new church building on the present site was consecrated in 1877. Fire struck again in 1932 and destroyed all but the tower, spire, and some exterior walls. On Easter Sunday, 1934 the first service was held in the present building. With its rich carvings of wood and stone and its glorious stained glass windows, All Saints Church has been described by many as one of the most beautiful churches in New England. It is the largest Episcopal church in the Diocese of Western Massachusetts, and as the architects for this Gothic Revival building were Frohman, Robb and Little of Boston, designers of the National Cathedral in Washington DC, our building has many similarities to that majestic cathedral. The Rice Memorial Organ at All Saints is one of the most celebrated in North America. If you do not already have a church home we invite you to worship with us as often as you would like and to consider joining our parish family. Evensong in an Anglican Church is a magnificent act of worship. Sung daily since the sixteenth century, this service is one piece of the total worship of God offered by Christian people at every hour of the day and night in every part of the world. Drawn almost entirely from the Bible, its primary purpose is to proclaim the wonderful works of God in history and in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Its secondary purpose is to evoke from the worshiper a response of praise, penitence, prayer and obedience. This is a service of Choral Evensong in which much of the music is sung by the Choir to classical and often elaborate settings dating from the time of the English Reformation (and earlier) to the present day. The form of our worship is drawn from the first Prayer Book of King Edward VI (1549) and subsequent revisions. We invite you to join silently in worship with the Choir, while they sing the prayers, Psalms, canticles, responses and other music.     Evensong Ascension Day • Thursday 29 May 2014 • 5:15 pm Welcome to Grace Cathedral. Evensong is said or sung in cathedrals, chapels and churches around the Anglican Communion every evening throughout the year. Its roots lie in monastic worship: Archbishop Thomas Cranmer (1489–1556) created the service for the Book of Common Prayer by fusing together the monastic evening offices of Vespers and Compline. Evensong celebrates the Incarnation of Jesus, that moment when God took human form and became a part of daily, earthly life. The choir sings psalms, a part of the Jewish worship in which Jesus participated, and integral to a community looking forward to the coming of the Messiah. The choir also sings the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, songs from the New Testament which have been set to music by numerous composers. The Magnificat, the Song of Mary from the Gospel of Luke, is a prophetic hymn by Jesus’ mother, the “God-Bearer,” about the world that would emerge with the birth of her child. The Nunc Dimittis, also from Luke, is the Song of Simeon, the man who waited devoutly in the temple for the expected Messiah. There are also readings, prayers and an anthem, usually on a seasonal theme. Throughout the service, word and music join together: each enriches the other so that our senses and intellects, our hearts and minds, work together to draw us closer to God, give us a glimpse of God’s glory and learn the pattern of love at the heart of Christian discipleship.
