Mumbai is expanding exponentially in terms of population as well as employment opportunities. According to the Regional Plan of MMR, the population of Mumbai Metropolitan Region has reached a staggering 22 million in the year 2011 as compared to 17 million in year 2001. While decadal growth in population in the island city over 1991-2001 was recorded at 4.79%, the suburbs recorded a decadal growth rate of about 19%. All additional population in Greater Mumbai is mainly concentrated in the western and eastern suburbs. In the north- west part of MMR, there is a mass of land which is peninsular in shape separated from the main land by a wide creek known as Manori - Gorai creek. To its west is Arabian sea, this peninsula is approx. ___________sq km and contains many villages such as Manori, Gorai, Uttan and Dongri. Vast part of peninsula is low lying and covered with mangroves, there is hill range along its western edge. This peninsula cons the only contains some of the famous sea beaches as well as large number of resorts, these are the most popular holiday destinations of Mumbai. However the peninsula is is connected to main land only in north, which is the only accessible road connection. However there are two water ferry connections are at Gorai-Borivali and other at Marve-Manori. MMRDA has prepared the Development plan for Gorai-Uttan, Notified area in which the Gorai Creek Bridge is a recommendation to connect Gorai area with Borivali (main land). There is no direct vehicular connectivity from Mumbai to Gorai creek. A lengthy detour of precisely 28.8 Km is required if one has to reach here. The Global Vipassana Pagoda is a Meditation Hall near Gorai, North-West of Mumbai, The pagoda is to serve as a monument of peace and harmony. The Global Vipassana Pagoda has been built out of gratitude to the Buddha, his teaching and the community of monks practicing his teaching. This unique monument attracts more than 3000 visitors during week days and 10000-15000 visitors during weekends. Presently approximately 8.0 lakh visitors come from all over the world to visit Pagoda.70% of visitors come from Borivali site using Esselworld jetty to reach Pagoda. Visitors have to wait in long queue for about 2 to 3 hours sometime to get in to ferry. Another route is from Bhayandar which is around 40 km distance and time consuming and expensive. There is another tourist attraction in this area known as Esselworld and water kingdom where number of tourists from Mumbai, Thane and other parts of Maharashtra use to visit in weekends to enjoy the rides. In addition to this there are so many Resorts at the beaches which make this peninsula most attractive place in the nearby vicinity. To mitigate the above difficulties by visitors to Pagoda, MMRDA intend to carry out the detailed study of the construction of proposed Bridge across Borivali Creek and subsequent development of road network connectivity to Global Pagoda. The total length of the proposed bridge will be around 550 m approximately and will consist of approximately 5.00 Kms of approach roads and development of road connectivity to Global Pagoda. MMRDA intends to carry out the detailed study of the construction of proposed Bridge across Borivali Creek and subsequent development of approach road network connectivity. .
