The biographer of Johnny Thunders, New York Dolls and Peter Perrett turns her attention to the heyday of glam rock. As a timid teenager, Antonia weaves her childhood memories of growing up as a glam-obsessed girl in Liverpool, to the time she actually got to meet her idols—Iggy, Thunders et al. Glass speaks to writer and author Nina Antonia. BACK in 1987, anyone who was a fan of the short lived but hugely influential New York Dolls in general, and the of the Dickensian wraith-like tortured genius of Johnny Thunders in particular, was delighted to have Johnny Thunders: In Cold Blood, an A4 format “coffee table” book for people who probably didn’t have coffee tables. What we did have was a meticulously researched and extremely well-written biography of Johnny Thunders, full of photographs and almost diary like, precise text by his friend and biographer Nina Antonia, at first a devoted Johnny fan and soon after, a biographer and confidant. She was his Boswell to his rock excess Johnson, recording material that was perhaps not that important to him, (though he approved of the project and encouraged Antonia) but massively important to his fan base. Her text reads almost like a life-tour-itinerary diary, gathering information not only from Johnny himself, who seemed to remember a great deal no matter how messed up he was on drugs, and of those who worked closely with him or managed him. To Antonia’s credit, she pulled no punches, but without ever saying, in one way or another, “This guy can be … unreliable, hard to work with …” because so many other people said it. She saw, and portrays, a softer side of Johnny. The one who bought groceries for Antonia (a single mum) and her daughter when he saw her cupboards were bare. She could see, and report, a vulnerability few saw in him, for all his guitar and style swagger, and his addiction, which, to those who knew him as a musician, a style icon and, most surprising of all, one of the good guys in a world dominated by not good guys, comes as a bit of a surprise. Johnny Thunders and Nina Antonia (1986). Photograph: Jon “Boogie” Tiberi. Courtesy of Jungle Records. Having read the original version over 30 years ago, I was struck how Antonia never inserted herself in the story, never taking umbrage at those who found the songwriter, vocalist and guitarist for the Dolls, The Heartbreakers, and solo artist a bit of a nightmare to work with. Somehow, his sheer musicianship and charisma, sometimes negative charisma – that thing where the artist seems to scorn the audience and the more they do, the more the audience lap it up-is captured perfectly in Antonia’s reportage-style prose. In this sense it is the perfect biography, written by someone who clearly recognised his weaknesses, flaws, and sometimes just NY attitude, but always balanced by an (unseen by the public) tenderness and fragility. In other words, once you got to know him, as Antonia did, as his partners and friends did, he was a talented musician in the right place at the right time, but also, drawn to the wrong places and the wrong times. This gives him, historically, an air of another great musician destroyed by drugs, and even superseded by the addiction aspect by fans who love the tragic muse element. More of which, later. Now the book is released in E-book format, which is helpful in the sense that it can reach people who are unable to get hold of the rare and expensive original book, (currently selling for £45 on Amazon) and great in that, as Johnny Thunders is no longer with us, Antonia gives us her measured and most accurate take on the probable cause of his death was not by overdose but by the more pedestrian – cancer, specifically leukaemia. His death is a conspiracy theory magnet.

It’s a poem that stood me in good stead on many occasions. Introduction 1 The urban landscape occupies a specific position in Bowie’s works. His lyrics are fraught with references to “city landscape[s]”5 and urban nightscapes. The metropolis provides not only the object of a diegetic and spectatorial gaze but it also enables the author to further a discourse on his own inner fragmented self as the nexus, lyrics— music—city, offers an extremely rich avenue for investigating and addressing key issues such as alienation, loneliness, nostalgia and death in a postmodern cultural context.

Not only did Aladdin Sane, Bowie’s sixth studio album, usher in the series of bold musical innovations that would launch him into rock-and-roll legendry, the introduction of the Aladdin Sane persona —“a lad insane”—signaled a performative instability that would continue to inspire, frustrate, and titillate fans and critics even after his death. This essay explores opportunities for tarrying with—rather than reducing or trying to pin down—that instability and critiques what seem to be inexhaustible efforts to do just that.

  • Aladdin Sane and Close-Up Eye Asymmetry
Igor Juricevic, ‘Aladdin Sane and Close-Up Eye Asymmetry: THE COMICS GRID David Bowie’s Contribution to Comic Book Visual Language’ Journal of comics scholarship (2017) 7(1): 4 The Comics Grid: Journal of Comics Scholarship, DOI: https://doi.org/10.16995/cg.94 RESEARCH Aladdin Sane and Close-Up Eye Asymmetry: David Bowie’s Contribution to Comic Book Visual Language Igor Juricevic Department of Psychology, Indiana University South Bend, South Bend, US [email protected] In April 1973 David Bowie released Aladdin Sane. The cover of Aladdin Sane features an iconic image of David Bowie, a close-up shot of the artist with brightly colored orange hair and asymmetrical lightning bolt make-up on the right side of his face. This article argues that the cover image for Aladdin Sane uses the Close-Up Eye Asymmetry (CUE-A) pictorial device (i.e., close-up view of David Bowie, asymmetrical make-up around his eye) and that CUE-A was adopted into Comic Book Visual Language by first providing evidence that CUE-A is used in comic book art. A link is then established between comic book art and music album art by showing that: (1) David Bowie was familiar with Comic Book Visual Language and could make a contribution to the language, and (2) comic book artists are influenced by music album art. I then make a case that the adoption of CUE-A into Comic Book Visual Language was specifically due to the cover image for Aladdin Sane by analyzing: (1) the use of CUE-A by influential artists in the 1990s and (2) the different rates of adoption of CUE-A for the depiction of established versus newer comic book characters.

  • DAVID BOWIE Sound + Vision

But when an old friend returns with dangerous new plans that threaten the fragile balance Cole has crafted in his declining mountain town, his world and identity are thrown into deep disarray. THE EVENING HOUR is an authentic portrait of a rural American landscape in transition - a moving, lyrical hymn for the complex tangle of hardship and hope wrought by the opioid addiction in Appalachia. TO SEE AND BE SEEN “The Evening Hour began as a book by Carter Sickels, born of Carter’s talking to people in the southern mountains about what was happening in their lives. His novel grew out of a documentary impulse and was received by the region as a beautiful new friend, immediately recognized and accepted. When Braden King and his friends came to my part of the southern mountains to shoot a film based on Carter’s book, they took similar care to acknowledge and discover where they were.
