Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2005 To Harold Ashenfelter and Amul Desai Preface A crowded, red double-decker bus pulls into the depot and comes to a rest amidst swirling dust and smoke. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute.

Vividh Bharati’s 5932/011116 vIvIdh BhaRatI's Role IN 'UNIfyINg' the INdIaN NatIoN Jawhar Sircar RKMIC, 29th January 2014 I. FREEDOM AT MIDNIGHT: 1. When we look back at the last six or seven decades, we see with amazement how India has emerged from a country that was tormented by internal convulsions and external threats to be now ranked among the top countries of the world. The entire picture has changed so dramatically, especially in the last two decades since we opened up our economy that India is now growing rapidly enough to be noticed. Though it has finally been afflicted by the world-wide economic contagion and is passing through a rather low, the world takes note: which it did not, earlier. The 21st century belongs to Asia and it is beyond doubt that China and India would be playing a major role, notwithstanding temporary hiccups along the way. 2. The question is how did this India, that is now proud of her high seat in the assembly of nations of the world, emerge as a cohesive nation that is finally solidly bonded. Let us take ourselves back to the stroke of the midnight hour, on the night of 14th/15th August 1947, when this nation was born: a memorable period that happens but once in a nation’s life-time. It was the most challenging of times, as not only was it a bleeding baby that had been severed from its sibling, but it was in the midst of violence, confusion and rioting. One was reminded of Churchill’s scathing remarks that "in a few years, no trace will remain" for "anarchy will lead to internecine warfare".

  • Desafios De Segurança Na Guiana E a Resposta Do Governo R

‘Radio Ceylon’ – the cultural landscape in India during the twentieth century: a brief note Mahua Chakrabarti1 Introduction Broadcasting, in its implication, range and impact, set up the most powerful medium of mass communication in India. It is very likely that in a vast and developing country like India where the reach of the printed medium is not very extensive or intensive, the value of broadcasting as a medium of information and education is immense. While the total circulation of all the newspapers in India, including both English and Indian language papers, is around 8 million, there are, according to a recent estimate, nearly 400 million (out of a total population of 625 million) potential listeners to ‘All India Radio’. Genesis of ‘Radio Ceylon’ Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), similar to India, was weak in terms of the available resources in the 1940s and 50s, but they made good use of their resources, at least in the field of radio broadcasting. ‘Radio Ceylon’ (now ‘Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation’, in Sinhala:‘,xld .=jka úÿ,s fiajh Lanka Guwan Viduli Sevaya’) is the oldest radio station in Asia. ‘Radio Ceylon’ started in Sri Lanka then Ceylon, being the vanguard for many other radio stations that later came to be famous around the world, inspiring countries such as Hong Kong, Korea, India and Singapore to enter the world of wireless media. ‘Radio Ceylon’s account goes back to World War II, when the Britishgovernment established a radio station in Colombo to neutralize German and Japanese war propaganda and to transmit news of the war to Allied forces in South and Southeast Asia.

  • Introduction
Introduction In May 1998, the Indian government transformed world media by granting Bombay cinema “industry” status. It was a remarkable decision, given the history of the state’s relationship with popular cinema. Even though Bombay had emerged as a major center of film production during the 1930s and 1940s, the Indian state did not regard filmmaking as an important industrial activ- ity or as central to the project of defining national culture. As a consequence, filmmaking did not receive the concessions and support that media—includ- ing radio and television—did. Punitive taxation, licensing, and censorship codes defined the state’s approach to cinema for nearly five decades. Ascribing industry status to filmmaking in 1998 was, at one level, an inter- vention in film financing. The government framed the decision as an attempt to rid the film business of “black money” (untaxed/unaccounted) as well as the involvement of the mafia/underworld, and to encourage transparent accounting practices. More broadly, this moment of reform also generated a discourse of “corporatization,” a set of changes deemed necessary for the film industry to shed its image as a dysfunctional “national” cinema and assume its place as a global media industry. Corporatizing the film business seemed all the more urgent given the phenomenal growth of other media sectors in India (television and telecommunications in particular) and the emergence of a globally competitive IT and software services sector in cities like Ban- galore and Hyderabad during the 1990s. Narratives of India Inc. confidently and triumphantly navigating the global economy were not lost on either the state or those in the film industry.
