J. Vargas. Dr. Chung made a significant/major contribution as a Co-Investigator 2020 NASA Astrophysics Research and Analysis (20-APRA20-0161, Declined) DIFFUSat: A UV-Optical Mission Targeting the Dim and Dark Universe (∼$7 Million) PI: D. Schiminovich, Co-I: H. Chung Current Research Aspera Co-Investigator, Project Scientist Aspera is a Small-Satellite UV space telescope focused on imag- ing emission from O VI coronal gas in nearby edge-on galaxies, funded by 2020 NASA Astrophysics Pioneers Program ($20 Million). Dr. Carlos Vargas is Principal Investigator (PI), and Prof. Erika Hamden is Deputy-PI, both at the University of Arizona. As a project scientist, Dr. Chung is leading Aspera instrument team and overall payload development. Hyperion Co-Investigator Hyperion is a Medium-size Explorer class (MIDEX) space telescope mission concept to observe molecular hydrogen at the boundaries of molecular clouds in nearby, galactic star-forming regions. PI is Prof. Erika Hamden at the University of Arizona. Hyperion was proposed to NASA SMEX AO in August 2019, and currently in formulation for MIDEX AO 2021 ($290 Million cost cap). As a Co-I, Dr. Chung estimates its payload performance and simulates the resulting spectrum. Faint Intergalactic Redshifted Emission Balloon (FIREBall-2) FIREBall-2 is a NASA funded UV balloon-borne telescope designed to observe faint emission from the outskirts of distant galaxies. It was once launched from the NASA Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Fort Sumner, NM. PI is Prof. Christopher Martin at California Institute of Technology. Dr. Chung works on alignment of spectrograph optics and preparation of its second flight, which is planned in summer 2022. K-SPEC K-SPEC is a ground-based multi-object spectrograph designed to survey the complete redshift survey of galaxies in the local universe. The instrument will be mounted on 1.6m KMTNet tele- scope at Siding Spring Observatory in Australia and 2.7m Harlan J. Smith Telescope at McDonald Observatory in Texas, USA. PIs are Dr. Ho Seong Hwang at Seoul National University, Korea and Dr. Jae-Woo Kim at Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, Korea. Dr. Chung works on conceptual design and performance estimation of the instrument, as well as optical design of the wide-field-corrector. DiffuSAT Co-Investigator DiffuSAT is a 3U CubeSat UV-Optical spectroscopic mission concept designed to observe faint and diffuse ionized gas in dark matter halos, circumgalactic medium, and the Milky Way. PI is Prof. David Schiminovich at Columbia University. DiffuSAT was proposed to 2/7 Last update: September 17th, 2021 2020 NASA APRA AO (∼$7 Million) in Dec. 2020. As a Co-I, Dr. Chung estimated its payload performance and contributed to proposal writing. LBT MODS Exposure time calculator Developer Dr. Chung is developing a exposure time/signal-to-noise ratio calculator for LBT MODS with Dr. Olga Kuhn at Large Binocular Telescope Observatory (LBTO). The calculator will be based on the generic exposure time/signal-to-noise ratio calculator for the ground and space based imager/spectrographs developed by Dr. Chung. The calculator will be available in Web, similar to DOTIFS S/N calculator (https://etc.astrohchung.com). Past Work Devasthal Optical Telescope Integral Field Spectrograph DOTIFS is an optical multi-integral field unit spectrograph designed to observe nearby galaxies with 3D spectroscopy. It will be mounted on the 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope in Nainital, India. Previously, Dr. Chung had led the overall conceptual design, spectrograph optical design, and software development (Data simulator and Signal-to-noise ratio calculator) of DOTIFS.
