Anti-Black Racism and the Foreign Black Other: Constructing Blackness and the Sporting Migrant
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship Repository ANTI-BLACK RACISM AND THE FOREIGN BLACK OTHER: CONSTRUCTING BLACKNESS AND THE SPORTING MIGRANT BY MUNENE FRANJO MWANIKI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Margaret Kelley, Chair Professor Tim Liao Associate Professor Moon-Kie Jung Associate Professor Monica McDermott ABSTRACT The popularity and globalization of sport has led to an ever-increasing black athletic labor migration from the global South to, primarily, the U.S. and Western European countries. While the hegemonic ideology surrounding sport is that it brings different people together and ameliorates social boundaries, sociologists of sport have shown this to be a gross simplification. Instead, sport is often seen to reinforce and recreate social stereotypes and boundaries, especially as it regards race and the black athlete in body and culture. At best we can think of sport as a contested terrain for both maintaining and challenging racial norms and boundaries. The mediated black athlete has thus always, for better or worse, impacted popular white perceptions of blackness broadly and globally. While much work has been done to expose the workings of race and racism in sport, studies have tended to homogenize black populations and have not taken into account the varying histories and complexities of, specifically, black African migrant athletes. -

Orlando's Dwight Howard Wins 2009-10 Nba Defensive
ORLANDO’S DWIGHT HOWARD WINS 2009-10 NBA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD PRESENTED BY KIA MOTORS NEW YORK , April 20, 2010 – Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic is the recipient of the 2009-10 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award presented by Kia Motors, the NBA announced today, marking the second straight season the All-Star has earned the honor. The 6-11 center became the first player to lead the league in rebounding and blocks (1973-74 was the first season blocks were kept as an official statistic) in consecutive seasons, averaging 13.2 rebounds and 2.78 blocks. Howard also paced the league in field goal percentage (.612), becoming the first player to lead the NBA in all three of those categories since the NBA started keeping blocked shots. He also became only the fifth player in NBA history to lead the league in rebounding for at least three consecutive seasons. Howard recorded an NBA-high 64 double- doubles, including three 20-point/20-rebound efforts. As part of its support of the Defensive Player of the Year Award, Kia Motors America will donate a 2011 Kia Sorento CUV on behalf of Howard to the Nap Ford Community School in Parramore, a community in downtown Orlando. Nap Ford's vision is to empower students to maximize their potential to be contributing members of society. Kia Motors will present a brand new Sorento, the Official Vehicle of the NBA, to the charity of choice of each of four 2009-10 season-end award winners as part of the “The NBA Performance Awards Presented by Kia Motors.” Following this season, Kia Motors will have donated a total of 12 new vehicles to charity since the program began in 2008. -

W4A is an influential conference that has a growing impact on the research community. According to the ACM Digital Library Bibliometric, people downloaded each of the W4A's 431 papers an average of 353 times and W4A papers were citation average of 4.64. We have always embraced the potential of new technologies to provide an accessible user experience for everyone. No longer do we look at technology and its potential challenges for users, but we look for how it can be used to provide accessible experiences for all. In recognition of the emergence of this new age, the theme for the 16th International Web for All Conference is “Personalization – Personalizing the Web.” Personalization pervades all aspects of technology from home appliances to mobile phones, from shopping experiences to education. -
