MONSTRESS by Marjorie Liu Monstress came super highly recommended to me when I asked our twitter followers what comics spoke to them about the things that make them diverse. YOTSUBA&! by Kiyohiko Azuma I am sceptical of things that people are super excited I thought this manga would be a bit about – I usually find I am cute and maybe a bit sappy, but I was disappointed, this was not the so wrong! case with Monstress (I really I LOVED YOTSUBA&! SOOOOOOOO want to forcibly make everyone MUCH and now that I have finished ever read it and like it as much reading a whole bunch of comics to write as me, but ehh that’s not cool) this little guide, I can dedicate all my time Anyways, this comic has to reading the rest of this series! everything you could ever want, Anyways, Yotsuba &! is the story of a Matriarchy! Monsters! Fantasy! little girl (named Yotsuba) and her Talking cats! Badass lady types! single, adoptive father. Other than the I read both available volumes representation of a family unit different to in as many days and now I’m the ‘cookie cutter’ variety, what makes this sitting around like a lost puppy manga SO GOOD is that (from the 1 volume waiting for the next volume to I read) Yotsuba seems to have little to no be released. FYI, this one’s a understanding or care for the social norms little violent – so if that’s not around her – she is purely 100% adventure your thing then probs best to and joy, which manifests leave this one for someone else in hilarious and heart-warming ways. to read.

AMERICA by Gabby Rivera Queer Latinx female superhero in the archetypal Marvel superhero format—aw yiss! Miss America is starting college and has an awesome array of feminine friends to help her along the way (and some Fifth Element references ftw.) I loved this because it showcases a strong, capable female in the traditionally male role of superhero without watering her down, yet she’s still relatable as a character. This comic gets bonus points for MY BROTHER’S HUSBAND representation of varying body types. by Gengoroh Tagame

This lovely and slightly heartbreaking manga examines cultural differences GOLDIE VANCE and homophobia through the lens by Hope Larson of Yaichi, a stay at home dad to his daughter Kana and Mike Flanangan, a Set in a kitchy 60’s hotel, Goldie Canadian man who married Yaichi’s Vance is a WOC teen detective in estranged and recently deceased twin the resort her father manages. brother Ryōji. Firstly, the art in this is super cute We watch as Yaichi struggles to and great, but the story is great too, work out his preconceptions about which is pretty important! Goldie gets homosexuality and the love and grief he up to all kinds of mischief to try and feels for his twin, while his daughter is catch the perpetrator of a robbery in the catalyst for many of his questions the hotel, at one point, almost getting about his prejudice as she adores this herself and her dad fired! new, foreign man in their lives without Casual queer references were hesitation. appreciated and all around I really I giggled audibly at many of the sweet enjoyed the first volume of Goldie parts of this book, usually on public Vance. It would likely appeal to a younger transport. audience than me — a good FAITH fun time for all ages. by Jody Houser

Plus sized superhero! Protagonist Faith Herbert writes content for a pop culture website by day & is a flying, caped crusader by ONES I DIDN’T GET TIME TO READ: night. Inherently relatable ‘Faith’ gives • Not funny ha-ha us a character who is not only a female by Leah Hayes superhero but also bucks the norm of • Eyes too dry by Alice Chipkin & physical stereotypes of women in the Jessica Tavassoli majority of mainstream comics. • Pink by Kyoko Okazaki • One more year by I REALLY REALLY wanted to LOVE this Simon Hanselmann

comic so hard that it hurt, but for me, I • Black Panther by felt the story itself fell a little flat. That is Ta-Nehisi Coates not to say that I don’t think others will • Black Panther: World of Wakanda by Roxane Gay & Ta-Nehisi Coates enjoy it, and if you think reading about (Please don’t ask me how I didn’t supernormal super women is a cool get time to read a comic written in part by Roxane Gay) thing to do, then be sure to give it a try.
