  • The Stanley Show
Introduction: The Stanley Show Stanley Matthews turned matter-of-factly, his stare fixed to avoid eye contact. His expression, washed of emotion, accentuated the slightly sunken, careworn look that made him appear at least as old as his thirty-two years. Time had already gone to work on his hair. It was combed back and still dark but was in the first stages of retreat. In close-up, something seemed to shadow his features, a sadness possibly pleated in the corners of his mouth. No one could have guessed that here was a man at the soaring peak of his powers who had just brought a packed arena to a ferment of excitement. As Matthews turned, gently hitching the elastic of his loose- fitting shorts on to his hips, the sellout crowd of 75,000 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels had started to applaud. Moments earlier, England’s outside-right had completed a run that even by his standards was exceptional, bewildering Belgium’s defence and electrifying the spectators. And that was not the end of this particular piece by Matthews on a pitch made treacherous by a violent cloudburst soon after kick-off. Having wrought havoc with the ball on the turf, he dipped his head, cocked his right boot and lifted the ball over the oncoming keeper. One reporter likened it to a golf shot, Matthews seizing a wedge and lofting The Wizard pages.indd 1 23/01/2014 11:15 2 jon henderson the ball in a meticulous arc. All that was left for Tom Finney to do to collect his second goal of the match was to deflect his header into an unguarded net.

News Release Monday 5 March 2018 NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY ACQUIRES FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS OF FOOTBALLER BOBBY MOORE ON AND OFF THE PITCH AS DISPLAY OPENS FOR WORLD CUP 2018 Bobby Moore by an unknown photographer for the Daily Sketch, early 1970s; Bobby Moore and George Best by Syndication International Ltd, 1964 © Mirrorpix;; Johnny Byrne and Bobby Moore by Monte Fresco, for Daily Mirror, 1963 © Mirrorpix The National Portrait Gallery has acquired a selection of photographs of footballer Bobby Moore, from the collection of his daughter Roberta Moore, it was announced today, Monday 5 March 2018. The portraits are seen together for the first time as part of a new display, Bobby Moore: First Gentleman of English Football (March 5 2018 – January 2019) to mark this summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament. Moore famously captained the England football team to achieve their first and only World Cup victory, on 30 July 1966, defeating West Germany 4-2 in a tense final at Wembley Stadium. While the famous image of Moore, lifting the Jules Rimet trophy cemented him as the embodiment of a golden period in English football, these newly acquired vintage press prints provide an insight into both the professional and personal life of one of England’s best-loved sporting heroes on the twenty-fifth anniversary of his death. • West Ham United's Success in the 1960S Is Due
1960s - The Glory Years West Ham United’s success in the 1960s is due to for- mer player and manager Ted Fenton. By 1958 the Club was at the top level of English football. “Past the Boleyn on the corner, turn left, it was just a few shops down…you had a, the cafe on the corner where people like Malcolm Allison - he was a big men- tor for Bobby Moore…. I obviously didn’t intrude but I’d sit as near as I could just to look at them not…in awe just to think, ‘Oh that’s my idol sitting over there and I’m in the same room as them.’ So that…I think there was a lot of tactical stuff talked by the first team squad in that cafeteria.” Michael (b. 1946, fan) Bobby Moore played for the club throughout the 60s Ron Greenwood took charge of the club in 1961: “Ron Greenwood was a very, very forward thinking manager and he excelled on tactics, and if you like continual training regimes and coaching and he en- couraged all the apprentices and young players to do coaching, because he thought, quite rightly that it made you think about your game….so I mean, he, he used to like to play the right back on the right wing, or the centre forward of the centre half, and, and you Ron Greenwood would realise the, the differences between the two positions, so, that was all part of your education as you were growing up” Robert (b. 1948, fan) With young local talent on the pitch - Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, Ronnie Boyce and Bobby Moore - the first taste of success came winning the 1964 FA Cup in a 3-2 win over Preston North End.

  • Najib's Delusions About GE13 Malaysiakini.Com June 25, 2012 by Mariam Mokhtar English Footballer Ian Wright Once Said
Najib's delusions about GE13 MalaysiaKini.com June 25, 2012 By Mariam Mokhtar English footballer Ian Wright once said: “I’ve got the passion but no idea of tactics - I’d be like a black Kevin Keegan.” Is this an apt description of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, the wannabe football player? Last Saturday, the football-mad Najib used Euro 212 as an analogy for BN to “strive like football players to thrash their opponents”. Sir Stanley Matthews, one of England’s finest footballers, once said: “Whenever I see a bald man walk down the street I never think, ‘there’s a man who has done a lot of worrying’, I think, ‘there’s a man who looks like he was a good header of a ball’.” We were wrong to assume that Najib has lost sleep and hair from worrying about the likely outcome of GE13. Najib must have been busy in his backyard, heading balls into the net. Employers also worry that Najib will contract football fever again. In 2010, the Malaysian team won the AFF Suzuki cup against Indonesia. Patriotism cost companies dearly. Absent workers meant that orders for goods were unfulfilled, and those who turned up for work, had to be paid ‘public holiday’ rates. Cynics mocked Najib and wondered if he would declare a month-long holiday should Malaysia win the World Cup. At the opening of the Urban Transformation Centre in Malacca, Najib boasted: “The Euro 2012 tournament probably will not see a record score like what I hope Barisan can achieve in the 13th general election, but I am confident we will emerge with 14-0 with 0 for the opposition.
