Herb Kohl to Honor Area Students and Educators on April 23 NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Kim Marggraf Wednesday, April 19, 2017 (920) 946-3640 MOBILE, (920) 457-1727 OFFICE [email protected], www.kohleducation.org Herb Kohl to Honor Area Students and Educators on April 23 MILWAUKEE — A luncheon and awards program to honor the achievements of central Wisconsin students, teachers, and principals will be held Sunday, April 23, at Waupun Junior and Senior High School in Waupun. On March 10, the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation announced the recipients of Initiative and Excellence student scholarships, teacher Fellowships, and principal Leadership Awards. The April 23 luncheon will recognize the accomplishments of the area’s outstanding students and educators, including 18 teacher Fellowship recipients, 21 Excellence Scholarship recipients, 15 Initiative Scholarship recipients, and two Leadership Award recipients. Kim Marggraf, spokesperson for the Herb Kohl Foundation, said that businessman and philanthropist Herb Kohl, representatives of co-sponsoring organizations — the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools, Wisconsin Cooperative Educational Service Agencies, Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Association of Wisconsin School Administrators, and Wisconsin Parents Association — and the families and friends of central Wisconsin award recipients will be part of the program. The Herb Kohl Foundation Excellence Scholarship was established by Herb Kohl in 1990 to provide scholarships to graduating Wisconsin high school students who have demonstrated academic excellence, outstanding leadership, citizenship, community service, integrity, and other special talents. The Herb Kohl Foundation Fellowship rewards teachers who have demonstrated superior ability to inspire love of learning in their students, motivated others, and provided meritorious service both inside and outside the classroom. The Herb Kohl Leadership Award recognizes principals who have set high standards for instruction, achievement, and character, and created a climate to best serve students, families, staff, and community. The Herb Kohl Initiative Scholarship was established to recognize students who have demonstrated a high level of motivation to achieve, shown strong promise for achieving success in college and beyond, overcome significant personal obstacles or adversity, and have not yet received other academic-based scholarships. “Herb Kohl will be making formal award presentations to the recipients at the luncheon,” Marggraf said. The Herb Kohl Foundation will issue the $10,000 Excellence and Initiative Scholarship grants to the postsecondary institution that each student will attend. Each teacher and principal will receive a $6,000 Fellowship or Leadership award and an additional $6,000 grant will be awarded to the educator's school for use in innovative educational projects. The foundation annually awards approximately 200 scholarships, 100 teacher fellowships, and 16 principal leadership awards throughout the state. The Waupun event is the third of five regional award programs sponsored by the Herb Kohl Foundation. The reception is scheduled to begin Sunday, April 23, at noon at Waupun Junior and Senior High School, 801 East Lincoln Street, Waupun. With 2020’s global pandemic thrusting our communities into unchartered territories, we focused our efforts to support our partners by adapting our programs and learning, so that we could continue developing our students into the next generation workforce. I am so proud of the commitment we made to help prevent a widening of the skills gap that remains critical to our economic recovery. It put the joy back into 2020 having it be GPSEd’s 20th Anniversary and provided us with more motivation to make 2021 our biggest year yet! Despite the challenges that faced both schools and businesses, as well as the vulnerable population of students we serve in our WI-based Manufacturing Youth Apprenticeship Program, we stayed the course and proudly held a virtual graduation. This ceremonious occasion sent 99 more students into the next chapter of their lives with a high school diploma, as well as credentials and industry certifications that put them on a pathway to prosperity. Work also continued on the development of new partnerships that included a virtual academy in Oregon and a high school district in DuPage County, Illinois in which we are working to expand work-based learning experiences to its educational offerings.

    Career and Technical Student Organizations Serving Career and Technical Education Students in Wisconsin 1 Career and Technical Education (CTE) is helping our nation address key challenges such as workforce development, student achievement, economic vitality and global competitiveness. Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) are key components to strong CTE programs. CTSOs integrate into CTE programs and courses and extend teaching and learning through innovative programs, business and community partnerships and leadership experiences at the school, state and national levels. • CTSOs provide relevant, engaging programs that improve student achievement, reduce dropout rates and help students discover the wide range of career options available. • CTSOs engage the community and local businesses to help students understand global competition and chart effective and efficient pathways through high school and postsecondary education for their personal success. • CTSO programs, such as industry based competitive events and community service, provide students with the opportunity to develop 21st Century Skills focused on creativity, problem solving, teamwork and goal setting. • CTSOs bring relevance to the classroom and prepare students to be college and career ready. The impact that CTSOs make in our state is quite astonishing.
