Mommy/Daddy “N” Me This is where it all begins. Parents and their toddler children have an opportunity to begin their musical journey together. This class is set up to introduce children to the violin and to begin learning the basics of handling the instrument with their parent. Over the last few years, many of our current students have graduated from the Mommy/Daddy “N” Me program to enter into our more advanced classes and ensembles. This class gives children an early appreciation for music. It’s all about fun and learning between parents and children.

North Torrance Lil’ Symphony Beginning Strings The beginning strings class meets weekly to learn the basics of the violin, viola, cello and bass. This class is available to children of all ages who are ready to partake in a class setting. This is also an introduction to music for the parents. Parents will be instructed on which instruments are best for their children. They will also be taught how to find the correct size of instrument for their child. In this group there is a ton of fun to be had and a whole lot of hard work that is put into learning the basic techniques and reading music. Children will learn to enjoy music and have fun while they master their instruments. Many of the children from the Mommy/Daddy “N” Me class move up into this group as well as children who are just beginning to have an interest in music.

Intermediate Strings This is the next step in the journey of our young string musicians. In this weekly course the focus becomes mastery of individual music arrangements. There is an emphasis on performance and this group begins to work on rehearsal skills, becoming more independent musicians, and growing and developing on their own instrument. Bowing, hand position, posture, and delivery are all a part of advancing each student’s musicianship. This group tackles more difficult musical pieces while still maintaining the fun element of being a performer and a musician. To participate in the Intermediate Strings group the student must have a working knowledge of reading sheet music, the basic technical skills of their instrument and Director approval.

North Torrance Youth String Orchestra This group meets weekly and is comprised of orchestral string instruments only. These are advanced string musicians who have worked their way up through the program, as well as new students who have a demonstrated the necessary capability for the class. They prepare and perform at most of our annual concerts and have participated in music festivals in Southern California. These students have likely been playing for at least two years and have demonstrated technical proficiency as well as artistic proficiency with their instruments. Many of these students are committed to their music and have the desire to perform. To participate in the Advanced Strings group, students must be able to read music, be able to play the requisite level of music at any given time during rehearsals and have Director approval.

Endpin Ensemble The Endpin Ensemble is a unique ensemble for cello and string bass players. A variety of styles of music are rehearsed and performed. The ensemble is directed by University of California, Irvine cello performance graduate and nTyme Assistant Director, Mr. Heriberto Ramos, who will provide all qualified cellists and bass students an opportunity to be the “star” of the show instead of just providing the “filler” as they typically do for a string quartet or string orchestra. All members of the ensemble must obtain the approval of Maestro Ramos to participate. Typically, the Endpin Ensemble rehearses on Saturday afternoons.

Setting the Tempo for Music Education Ensembles

North Torrance Wind Ensembles Beginning Band The Beginning Wind Ensemble offers a wide variety of concert band instrumentation. There are brass instruments, woodwinds, and percussion. This class is available to children of all ages just beginning on their wind or percussion instrument. The class meets weekly to learn the basics of wind and percussion instruments. Parents will be instructed on which instruments are best for their children. In this group, the students have a lot of fun but work hard too. They learn basic musical techniques and learn to read music. For the students who are interested in playing a wind instrument or would like to learn and play percussion, this is the group.

Intermediate Band This is the next step in the journey of our young band musicians. In this weekly course the focus becomes mastery of individual music arrangements. There is an emphasis on performance and this group begins to work on rehearsal skills, becoming more independent musicians, and growing and developing on their own instrument. Hand position, posture, and delivery are all a part of advancing their musicianship. This group tackles more difficult musical pieces while still maintaining the fun element of being a performer and a musician. To participate in the Intermediate Wind Ensemble the student must have a working knowledge of reading sheet music basic technical skills on their instrument Director approval.

Advanced Band This group consists of skilled advanced wind and percussion players. The main focus of the Advanced Wind Ensemble is concert band music. They prepare and perform at many of our annual events. In the past, the combined Intermediate and Advanced Wind Ensemble participated in the “Concert at the Park” at Knotts Berry Farm and the Forum Music Festival. In addition to the Director, we’ve had a variety of high school students participate as student conductors. They also help to instruct and improve the musicianship of the younger students participating in this group. These students have likely been playing for at least two years and have demonstrated technical proficiency as well as artistic proficiency with their instruments. Many of these students are committed to their music and have the desire to perform. To participate in the Advanced Band group, students must be able to read music, be able to play the requisite level of music at any given time during rehearsals and have Director approval.

Flute Choir Flute Choir is a special ensemble for those who play flute and/or piccolo. Members of this group are selected to participate in this group from Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Community Orchestra. A variety of styles and music are taught including classical, jazz and popular music. All members of the ensemble must obtain the approval of the Director to participate. If your child is interested in performing with this ensemble, please contact the Director.

Brass Ensemble The Brass Ensemble premiered at the Garden Buddhist Church Spring Fujimatsuri Festival in May 2012. They have gone on to perform at the Armstrong and at our annual golf tournament. Aside from normal rehearsals, the ensemble will function as a workshop for players of all ages. These workshops will serve to improve playing technique, sight-reading, and overall musicianship. Brass Ensemble includes trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn and baritone players. The structure of the group is subject to change and will be flexible to serve the needs of the players within the group. For interest in joining the Brass Ensemble, please contact the Director.

Setting the Tempo for Music Education Ensembles

Reed Rush Reed Rush is a special ensemble of Clarinet musicians formed by Mr. Glen Kamida, who is himself a skilled and seasoned clarinetist. Previous performances by Reed Rush included special community events and local hospitals or churches during the holiday season where they played a variety of chamber music as well as jazz and popular music selected by the Director. New this year, Reed Rush rehearsals will function as a workshop for players of all ages. The student must be able to play the clarinet and read sheet music. It is open to all types of clarinet students, for those who play the standard B-flat instrument to alto and bass clarinets. If your student is interested in joining Reed Rush, please contact the Director for additional information.

Strings N Things Musicians playing at least one string and one wind instrument make up this very fluid and versatile group. In general, these musicians have been playing for a number of years. Many of them started with the string or band instrument and, because of need or necessity, picked up a secondary band or string instrument to help fill the other ensembles. These performers are all seasoned and have been with nTyme music programs for most of their music careers. It is common to see these musicians switching instruments in the midst of a performance only to go back to their original instrument to finish up. Membership in this group is not open to all students; however, it is not exclusive either. Students must be able to proficiently play both a string and wind instrument to participate.

North Torrance Jazz Band This ensemble of musicians plays an upbeat style jazz, swing, and Top 40 songs. Because of the level of music played, members must be capable of reading and playing music on their jazz instrument; trumpet, trombone, saxophone, keyboard, guitar, bass, and drums. The Jazz Band has performed at many community events, such as the Senior Expo, the Japanese Cultural Institute (JCI) summer festival, Gardena Buddhist Church Fujimatsuri, and many other events where nTyme is called upon during the season. They have even played as far away as San Gabriel for the Gedatsu Church Moon Festival. Their style of music always draws a crowd and their musicianship and style have pleased many audiences. If you or your child is interested in the Jazz Band, please contact the Director.

North Torrance Youth Symphony Orchestra The North Torrance Youth Symphony Orchestra (NTySO) is led by Mr. Leonard Narumi, the former Visual and Performing Arts Administrator for the Montebello Unified School District. The group is comprised of elementary and middle school students, with members selected through a challenging audition process. Currently there are approximately 40 students participating in weekly rehearsals and performances. The instrumentation of this group includes traditional strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion. NTySO was the first ensemble created by nTyme back in 2008. Performance opportunities were presented to our Music Director for NTySO and through their success, nTyme was born. In the spring time, NTySO typically competes in the Forum Music Festival in Southern California. They have gone on to receive many accolades, including First & Second Place finishes and Gold and Silver ratings for their performances in the Middle School Orchestra Division at the Forum Music Festival and Forum Music Judges’ Invitational. Participation in this group is by audition only. For information on the audition process, please check our website or speak with an nTyme representative.

Setting the Tempo for Music Education Ensembles

North Torrance Community Orchestra The Community Orchestra, which combines all school age students and adults, including nTyme alumni, provides a unique performance opportunity for those looking to play in full orchestra. All aspiring elementary, middle, or high school string, woodwind, brass, or percussion students are welcome; however, they are required to audition before attending any rehearsal. Adults seeking to perform in this challenging but fun group need not audition; however, they must be familiar with their orchestral instrument, be able to read music and demonstrate they meet these requirements as determined by the Director. The Community Orchestra regularly performs at our Winter and Spring Concerts and collaborates with NTYCO at festivals.

North Torrance Youth Chamber Orchestra This group consists of advanced middle and high school musicians. Many of the students study privately with some of the finest teachers in the South Bay, and some have also participated in a variety of other well-known music associations in the greater Los Angeles and Orange County areas, such as the SCSBOA All State Honor Orchestra and Band, Asia America Youth Orchestra, Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Olympia Orchestra. Many of the students in this group have also earned individual music achievement awards. The group performs music at the most difficult high school level as well as classical standards performed by professional symphonies. NTYCO has competed in the Heritage Music Festival competition in several locations including San Francisco and San Diego where they received “Gold” ratings for their performance in the High School Band, Strings and Orchestra Divisions. This feat earned them an invitation to the Heritage Music Festival of Gold. The group has also earned “Gold” ratings at the Forum Music Festivals and participated in the Disney Performing Arts Workshop. The group is led by our Assistant Director, Mr. Heriberto Ramos. Participation in this group is by audition only. For information on the audition process, please check our website or speak with an nTyme representative.

2019 - 2020 Performance Attire

When musicians perform, they must not only exhibit superb musicianship, but must also display visual excellence that says, “Look at us, not only do we sound great, but we look great too!” That is called “Stage Presence.” Over the past number of years, groups from nTyme have received many top awards for their musical performances. nTyme’s performance attire rules are similar to those followed by professional orchestras. All students must have appropriate hair, make-up, and accessories. No bright-colored hair, outrageous hairstyles, excess or costume make-up or accessories that will detract from the performance. The music is the focus of the performance, not the performer.

Gentlemen The following attire is appropriate for all performances (unless otherwise determined by the Director): ♪ White long sleeve, button shirt (black long sleeve, button shirt for NTYCO and Community only) ♪ Black dress pants or slacks - NO shorts ♪ Long black tie ♪ Black tuxedo or suit (for orchestra only, as determined by Director) ♪ Black socks ♪ Black dress shoes (no tennis shoes, sandals or flip-flops)

Ladies The following attire is appropriate for all performances (unless otherwise determined by the Director): ♪ White blouse (black blouse for NTYCO and Community only) ♪ Black pants or skirt (knees must be covered when sitting) - NO shorts or mini-skirts ♪ Black concert dress (knees must be covered when sitting) ♪ Black nylons, tights, or socks (skin-tone colored nylons are acceptable) ♪ Black dress shoes (no tennis shoes, sandals or flip-flops)

ANYONE WEARING THE WRONG OR INAPPROPRIATE ATTIRE MAY NOT BE ALLOWED TO PERFORM!

Performance Etiquette for Adults

Watching your child perform is the thrill of a lifetime for a parent. Your presence is a strong affirmation of your support for your child and the music program. In order to make the moment special for everyone, please consider the following: ♫ If you arrive late or leave early, please enter and exit the auditorium between selections. ♫ Refrain from conversation while the students are performing. ♫ Make sure all cell phones and electronic devices are turned off or in “silent” mode and that all alarms are turned off during the performance. ♫ If younger children become disruptive, please take them outside. ♫ Avoid walking in front of the performing group. ♫ Please no flash pictures while the students are performing. ♫ If videotaping is allowed, please do not block the view with equipment (iPads, large cameras, etc.) for the audience members around you. ♫ Do not consume food or beverages in the auditorium. ♫ Please do not leave as soon as your child’s portion of the concert is done. All students deserve an audience, and students enjoy watching their friends and siblings perform, so we encourage all families to stay for the entire concert. The performers will appreciate it and you will enjoy great music performances! ♫ Show your appreciation with applause!

FOR THE PURPOSES OF THE STUDENTS’ SAFETY AND FOR PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT, WE ASK THAT PARENTS DROP OFF THEIR STUDENT(S) AT THE VENUE’S “GREEN ROOM” BUT NOT REMAIN THERE. STUDENTS WILL BE MONITORED BY DESIGNATED NTYME PERSONNEL.

Setting the Tempo for MusicEducation Frequently Asked Questions

How can I help my child with his/her music education? We highly recommend students participate in their school music program, if one is available. It offers them an opportunity to practice their instrument every day and is very beneficial to their music education. Also, private lessons offer one-on-one instruction and are essential to developing and refining skills and proper technique. If you are interested in obtaining a private instructor for your child, please contact the Directors for references to good teachers in the area.

How do I go about getting information or answers to my questions? Our website, www.ntyme.org, offers many links, from contact information to a calendar of events. We update our website frequently, so if you have any questions please check the website first. If you do not find the answer you can go to the “About nTyme” section and click on the Board of Directors link to contact us. Of course we are always happy to speak with you, do feel free to ask any nTyme representative during rehearsals. We also send emails with information as events near. Make sure you join our email list if you have not already done so. (Please be sure the [email protected] address is unblocked from your Spam or Bulk E-mail folder.)

How do I join the email list? Send an e-mail to [email protected] with the name of your child, the group he/she participates in, and the group names you wish to receive information about (see Ensembles pages for names of groups). You do not need to have a student in one of our programs to join our e-mail list, just request to be added to the general announcements.

When are rehearsals or concerts? Please check the calendar of events on our website or in the Handbook for these dates. You should also receive e-mail updates from us (e-mail address is [email protected]). If you are not receiving e-mails, please let us know. Please watch for date changes, they are generally posted on the calendar on our website and communicated by e-mail and announcements at rehearsals.

When are nTyme meetings held? Committee Board meetings are typically held on the 3rd Monday of each month at the Arlington Elementary School Cafetorium. General Meetings are held once a quarter. Please check the calendar of events on our website or in the Handbook for those dates. Please watch for date changes, they are generally posted on the website and communicated by e-mail and announcements at rehearsals.

What music programs are offered by nTyme? nTyme provides numerous music programs, from orchestras, band and strings to small specialty groups. Please check our website or the Handbook for a current list of groups. Our season runs concurrently with the standard September-June academic year. Registration occurs in the summer for each new season, but we welcome new students anytime during the year.

Must I register my child? Yes, every student is required to register. Registration helps us maintain a safe and positive learning environment. It enables us to know our students and their parents, and provides us with necessary information such as emergency contact and medical information should it be necessary. Registration also helps us ensure that only those students who are intended for a specific program are attending and participating in that program.

How do I register my child? We have three dedicated registration dates, one each in June, August and September. The June and August dates are in conjunction with full orchestra auditions for the upcoming season, and the September date is in conjunction with our annual Garage Sale fundraiser. All dates are held at Arlington Elementary School in Torrance. Please consult the website or Handbook for specific dates, or feel free to contact any nTyme representative. After the season begins, you may register during any of our rehearsals by contacting the nTyme representative in attendance. Registration forms are available on the website.

Setting the Tempo for Music Education Are adults eligible to participate in the organization's music programs? Adults, including nTyme alumni, are eligible to participate in Community Orchestra, Adult ‘Ukulele, and all specialty groups. Participation in Community Orchestra is open to any adult who demonstrates they meet the eligibility requirements provided in the Handbook or as otherwise determined by the Director. Parents who are assigned to assist the Director for a specific class may also participate but only for the purpose of educating the students in their capacity as an assistant to the Director. The Director may also invite certain adults to participate during a performance if there is an instrumentation need that cannot be met by the students.

Does nTyme have instruments tor students to use? Yes, nTyme has a limited number of instruments available for current students. Use is for the current season and not intended to be long term. These instruments are intended for students that are new to the instrument and not sure whether they will stay with it, for parents who cannot afford an instrument for their student, for parents that have not yet had the opportunity to obtain an instrument for their student, and for parents that simply do not know what to buy for their student. The suggested, but not required, donation is $50 - $100. This donation helps us with the maintenance and repair of the instruments that we lend out. The use period is for one season, from the date the instrument is loaned out through the next succeeding 30 June, or end of season, whichever comes first, after which the instrument must be returned for inventory, maintenance/repair and possible loan to another student.

Setting the Tempo for Music Education Supporting nTyme

Every day the news reminds us we need to be fiscally responsible. Budgets are cut, costs continue to rise and everyone is stretched thin. Music and the arts education is not immune, as we often see these programs are cut first, and in some instances dropped entirely. These programs face an ongoing need to generate funds to support their existing work, as well as their growth and development. It would be wonderful to have an unlimited funding source through which facilities, equipment, supplies, clinicians, music, instruments, etc., can be provided. However, we know that is not realistic. As such, nTyme operates entirely through fundraisers and the generosity of our sponsors, donors and volunteers. nTyme cannot exist without your financial support, and it is that support that allows the youth of our community to continue their musical journey through the programs we offer. Whatever the type and level of support, whether a monetary, material or capital contribution, there are many ways you can support us and the music education of our youth. Because nTyme is a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, your contribution may be tax deductible*. In addition, it is a great way for you or your company to gain direct exposure to our community.

However, that is not enough. We encourage student and family involvement with our fundraising activities, many of which involve performing and having fun while fundraising at the same time. For our annual Golf Tournament, students seek donations and sponsors. At our dine-out nights, restaurants give back a percentage of the receipts to our organization while we enjoy great food and socialize with families and friends. Our annual Garage Sale offers the students an opportunity to help fundraise while having fun and earning community service hours necessary for school.

Financial The primary form of support is a financial donation. All contributions, whether $10, $100, $1,000, $10,000, or more, are appreciated. No contribution is too small, and no contribution is less appreciated. All contributions are recognized. Depending on the level of contribution, benefits such as nTyme merchandise, invitations to nTyme events and ad space for your business or family are also given in thanks to your generosity. Please contact any nTyme representative for further information.

Material If you are able to make a donation of items such as instruments, music, equipment, office supplies, etc., whether new or gently used, we will gladly accept them. The trumpet or violin collecting dust in your closet could be the first step to a young student’s musical journey! We also accept items for use in our raffles and silent auctions.

Capital/Large Items nTyme currently uses facilities of the Torrance Unified School District to hold rehearsals, meetings and other events, as well as for storage. However, with our growing student population, increasing inventory and the number of programs and performance opportunities we offer, the ability of those facilities to support our needs is quickly reaching their limits.

The transportation of instruments and equipment to performances is always a challenge for nTyme. A dedicated equipment truck or trailer would greatly simplify one of the many logistical variables we must consider when planning our events. Furthermore, the increased mobility will also help us expand the performance opportunities for your students.

With these in mind we have begun the work to obtain our own facility and an equipment truck or trailer. Our own facility gives us a place to call home. An equipment truck or trailer allows us to better support our students' in their performance events and festival tours. In all cases, these things allow us to continue to grow and support our youth on their musical journey to the fullest extent possible. To that end we have established a fund that will help us obtain our own facility. This fund will also help us properly outfit a facility as well as obtain other much needed items, such as the equipment truck or trailer. If you are interested in helping us obtain these items, whether by donating specifically to our fund, donating for a specific high value item or donating the item themselves, whether to own or to lease at a discounted rate, please contact us about how you can help, we would love to speak with you! *Please consult with your tax professional before making any deductions.
