“Torrance Education Foundation is respected and acknowledged as the direct, vital link between the Greater Torrance community and our children’s educational excellence. An investment in the Torrance Education Foundation can only be considered an investment in the future of our community.” Patrick J. Furey, Torrance Mayor

For the past 25 years, Torrance Education Foundation has been the “vital link” supporting our children and schools in Torrance Unified School District.

Every resident, family and business person in Torrance can be justly proud of our school district. With our high school graduation rate at 96%, Torrance Unified School District ranks among the highest in the state of California. TUSD can boast of solid academics, safe campuses, highly respected faculty and staff, a strong and active PTA/PTSA organization, and a dedicated family and business community. TUSD special needs staff cultivates individualized personal achievement for 2,700 students, while the District’s Gifted and Talented Education programs enroll more than 2,300.

But TUSD cannot do it alone.

Our schools in Torrance do a tremendous job of educating students – we have so many wonderful teachers – but it is no secret that school resources often cannot stretch beyond the basics. When school budgets flounder, it is our community who pitches in to help restore essential programs and services. Even in the most difficult of years of the recent great recession, Torrance Education Foundation and our steadfast donor community stepped up.

Torrance Education Foundation is the catalyst that brings together community members, businesses and philanthropic foundations to fill the gap when California Education budgets fall short.

“The crucial support TUSD receives from Torrance Education Foundation is a reflection of our strong, long-standing partnership that provides exciting learning experiences and vital enrichment opportunities to Torrance students, both inside and beyond the classroom.” Dr. George Mannon, Superintendent Torrance Unified School District

We invite you to donate to Torrance Education Foundation, and join us in our mission to bring the best possible educational opportunities to our young people.

To donate online, please visit the TEF website at www.TEF4kids.org. Our downloadable donor form is also available.

At Torrance Education Foundation, we are committed to helping TUSD include the programs and enriched education we all know our students need to compete with other districts and states. All 23,500 TUSD students rely on us to help meet their individual learning and enrichment needs.

Your gift will help ensure our children receive more than a mandated education. Can we count on you?

Mission and Strategic Priorities

Mission: The Torrance Education Foundation (TEF), an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity, promotes and financially supports academic excellence for students in the Torrance Unified School District from pre-Kindergarten through graduation.

TEF champions an inspirational, well-rounded education for all young people served by the TUSD; recognizes outstanding teachers and education contributors; develops strategic alliances with business organizations, parents and the community; and cultivates innovation and curiosity among students of every age and grade.

Strategic Priorities:

Since its founding in 1992, TEF has been a catalyst, unifying the interests of families, businesses, foundations, and public agencies around the shared duty to provide students in our community the broadest possible access to learning opportunities that engage their intellect and build their understanding of the world around them.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, TEF is pursuing these focused priorities:

1. Equipping new Elementary Science Laboratory Classrooms being constructed at all 17 District Elementary Schools with laboratory tools, materials and devices. Phases I and II (9 schools) are complete. Phase III (8 schools) will continue through June 2019, bringing cutting-edge new experimentation labs to all 10,000 elementary students. In total, TEF will contribute $700,000 to this critical effort, and seeks investing partners to complete this key project; 2. Continued support through our STEM Initiative for innovative and interactive extra-curricular learning opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; 3. Partnerships with all 31 individual TUSD schools, as well as PTA/PTSAs and school-based affinity groups, which facilitate participatory fundraising to benefit each partner school or group’s priorities and needs. In the past five years, TEF has supported numerous key innovative and creative undertakings that shape students’ learning experiences. Among TEF’s many contributions, with grants, scholarships and student support activities totaling more than $6.5 million…

• TEF launched its STEM Initiative grants. In 2018, $49,750 was granted to 55 TUSD teacher-led projects for 65 classroom and after-school projects targeting eight select STEM programs: Science Olympiad, Math Counts, Robotics, afterschool Engineering Clubs, CyberPatriots, Hour of Code, Stellar Xplorers, and family STEM nights; • TEF built a fully equipped District computer learning laboratory for faculty and staff training purposes; • TEF underwrote teacher training in literacy, math, and science for teachers at every grade level, and • supplied the funds for substitute instructors during teacher training sessions; • TEF continues to support Academic Decathlon teams at all four high schools, that earn statewide recognition; • TEF awarded $39,000 in scholarships in 2018, made possible by corporate and individual partners,to graduating seniors at all TUSD high schools; • TEF sponsors the Teacher of the Year, which honors exemplary Elementary, Middle and High School educators; AND • TEF operates the South Bay Enrichment Academy, a fully WASC- and NCAA-accredited summer school program, for Torrance area elementary, middle and high school students every year.

Torrance Education Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that TUSD, its administrators and faculty, and our community’s children have the resources needed to access the state-of-the-art tools and enriched, engaging, inspirational educational experiences we all know our students need in order to compete with other districts and states.

All 24,000 TUSD students can rely on TEF to help meet their individual learning and enrichment needs.

Programs and Initiatives

Torrance Education Foundation engage the community – parents, families, businesses and concerned citizens – in the effort to ensure our students in Torrance have the 21st century tools and enriched learning experiences they need and deserve to thrive, excel, and compete in the academic marketplace.

Torrance Education Foundation annually provides significant financial investment to support the academic excellence of students enrolled in Torrance Unified School District. In the past five years, TEF has invested more than $6 million in our students’ academic success.

Responsive 24,000 students are served by Torrance Unified School District. While California state school Support for funding provides the basic resources to employ instructors, aides, and administrators, many st Key TUSD “amenities” – WiFi, computer labs, and other 21 century instructional innovations – fall outside the realm of affordability. Priorities: In recent years, TEF has channeled the Torrance community’s support to supply much needed state-of-the-art assets, and to provide the funds for strategic programmatic endeavors, for TUSD students and educators, including:  Acquiring, installing and maintaining the first district-wide WiFi network to allow students and administrators on-campus access to learning and study tools only available via the internet;  Building and equipping a dedicated, state-of-the-art computer learning lab at the TUSD Administrative Office for faculty and administrators;  Sponsoring teacher training in literacy, math, and science for elementary, middle, and high school teachers;  Underwriting the cost of substitute instructors during teacher training, to allow teachers to be away from their classrooms;  Fully funding the district-wide expansion and upgrade of eTUSD, a Technology-based learning platform incorporating software and hardware acquisition, online specialized library access subscription, teacher training, and professional development sessions.

Elementary Seventeen new state-of-the-art Science Laboratory Classroom will be constructed on TUSD Science Elementary campuses by 2019. Bond funding for construction is in place, but does not encompass laboratory tools, equipment or supplies, or provide for teacher training. Laboratories: TEF, in partnership with our business and donor community, will provide the $40,000+ to outfit each new classroom with all the age-appropriate tools, devices and materials needed, and as supplemental funding as needed to support teacher orientation and training. Our students will benefit from the dynamic inquiry and discovery that can only be experienced in a hands-on, exploratory learning environment. As TUSD adopts and implements Next Generation Science Standards in elementary classrooms, TEF is alongside to provide support for new innovations.

Academic success in the 21st century cannot be achieved without a keen appreciation for Science, STEM Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. TEF in 2014 launched its STEM Initiative to assist Initiative teachers in providing exciting, engaging opportunities for students of all ages to explore these Grants: subjects and develop their proficiency and capability. In 2017, STEM Initiative Grants provided funds to support the following seven targeted programs and one pilot program. All build curiosity, develop STEM knowledge and skills, involve parents, and encourage both individual and team endeavor: After-school Engineering Clubs Community- and Family-based STEM nights CyberPatriots Coding Club Robotics, incorporating TorBots Hour of Code Science Olympiad Math Counts Stellar Xplorers

TUSD teachers proposed 63 projects for 2018-2019 that received a total of $50,000 in TEF STEM Initiative grants for activities to be held between November 2018 and June 2019. To date, TEF has funded 233 projects with $186,000 in grant funds awarded to teachers, serving 32,500 students.

Direct Support TEF has a long history of supporting student endeavors that encourage intellectual growth, and Grantmaking: that also help prepare students to challenge obstacles they will face in life, and to seek and master opportunities they encounter. The following programs continue to receive direct support every year:  Academic Decathlon – preparing for this rigorous academic competition is a tremendous undertaking on the part of students, coaches and parents, and the cost of study materials mounts up. TEF provides financial support to underwrite the cost of preparation materials for the Academic Decathlon teams at all four full-enrollment TUSD high schools.  TorBots – The first TUSD Robotics Club, TorBots, launched more than a decade ago at South High School with support from TEF. Its success spawned additional clubs, and in 2014, TEF expanded its funding for Robotics throughout the district and now provides grants for Robotics at Elementary, Middle and High Schools through the STEM Grants Initiative.

Scholarships In 2018, TEF awarded twenty-two scholarships totaling $39,000 to graduating seniors to assist them for Graduating in their college pursuits. TEF scholarships are offered in collaboration with corporate and other Seniors: local partners, which provide the resources to supply scholarship support for applicants who meet key academic and discipline-focused criteria. Seniors at each of TUSD’s five high schools are notified each winter and encouraged to apply for available scholarship support. Each scholarship award winner is selected based on decision-making criteria established by TEF and its scholarship partners.

South Bay This past summer, more than 1,100 Torrance/South Bay area students attend summer school at Enrichment the South Bay Enrichment Academy (SBEA), a subsidiary of Torrance Education Foundation. Academy: Established by TEF in 2009, summer school coursework is offered for both Elementary and Secondary students, taught by TUSD teachers employed by SBEA during their summer hiatus. SBEA High School courses are accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Any SBEA class offering high school credit can be used to meet graduation requirements at all TUSD high schools. Elementary and Middle School courses are offered for enrichment. Elementary classes are designed to develop the younger mind, offering structured study as well as educational play and themed activities. Middle School courses supplement the instruction students receive during the school year, and also offer a selection of unique “specialty” classes typically not found in normal curricula that use play and skill building to inspire both learning and personal growth.

Community The strength, and the promise, of Torrance Education Foundation is a direct reflection of community Engagement support. Each year, with help from generous community partners, TEF enlists its community in Opportunities fundraising efforts to benefit individual schools and school groups. for Skechers Pier-to-Pier Friendship Walk Participatory In the Fall, TEF and Torrance Schools are partners in the annual Skechers Pier-to-Pier Friendship Fundraising: Walk, which benefits Special Needs students and the six South Bay Education Foundations. Schools and school groups that enlist “walkers” to participate in the Skechers Walk can raise funds for their own school or school-based group. TEF subsequently receives a generous grant from Skechers Foundation which we share with each qualifying TUSD school or school group, based upon the number of walkers on their Walk Teams. In 2018, more than $95,000 was raised for TUSD schools. Spectacular Toyota Car Raffle In 2018, our friends at Toyota donated a beautiful RAV4 Hybrid SUV to TEF for the 14th Annual Spectacular Toyota Car Raffle. Raffle tickets are sold by every TUSD school, with help from a cadre of TEF Ambassador Teachers, PTA/PTSA members, and school-based groups. A portion of every ticket purchase may be designated by the purchaser to benefit the school or qualifying TUSD school group of their choice. After the raffle winner is announced, TEF makes grants directly to support each school or school group that was designated by raffle ticket purchasers.

February 26, 2019 Torrance Education Foundation names Dr. George Mannon 2019 James R. Armstrong Honoree

Award Presentation at 2019 Dinner Benefit on May 4, 2019

About Dr. George Mannon

In thirteen years as Superintendent of Torrance Unified schools, Dr. George Mannon has made an indelible mark on the district. These and other projects made possible by the bond measures provide Torrance students with safer and more secure campuses and 21st-century learning environments. During Dr. Mannon’s tenure, Torrance Unified has continued to have one of the highest graduation rates in the state, currently, 97%, and TUSD high schools have been ranked by US News & World Report as some of the best in the state, and nationwide.

Torrance, CA – $49,500 in grants from Torrance Education Foundation (TEF) will support __ STEM related learning projects at Torrance Unified School District (TUSD) schools during the 2018-2019 Academic Year.

Lead Teachers for each project have just received notification of their grants. Grants support projects at all grade levels from Kindergarten through High School. Applications were open to all teachers in Torrance Unified School District. Grant funds will pay for materials and supplies, competition entry fees, and in one case will even purchase a competition arena for CombatBot wargames.

All funded projects provide extracurricular learning that complements classroom activities for students in the STEM disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Dr. Chad Mabery, President of the TEF Board of Directors, states, “Our STEM Initiative helps teachers build excitement around STEM subjects by giving students more hands-on experience. It also gives teachers a chance to collaborate so that more students can benefit. Mastering STEM subjects is crucial for student success today, so all of us at TEF are delighted this program has seen such strong growth.”

“The Torrance Education Foundation’s focus on enhancing and expanding STEM learning opportunities for all our students is to be commended,” says Superintendent Dr. George Mannon. “State funding for school districts always falls short and TEF helps us fill that gap. TEF has become the catalysts through which the District has been able to strengthen and grow many of our STEM programs, such as the elementary science labs project.”

“I would like to thank the thousands of parents and our business community for continuing to invest in our students through their ongoing support of TEF. We are extremely grateful for our enduring, strong partnership with TEF.”

Torrance Education Foundation selected to be honored at first‐ever California Nonprofits Day celebration

State leaders to honor and award “Nonprofits of the Year” at State Capitol event June 22

Torrance, CA – On Wednesday, June 22, Torrance Education Foundation will be honored as a Nonprofit of the Year at the inaugural celebration of California Nonprofits Day at the State Capitol in Sacramento.

Torrance Education Foundation (TEF) has been selected by Assemblymember David Hadley as an exceptional nonprofit organization in his district community. TEF will join other nonprofit leaders from across the state being honored at this inaugural California Nonprofits Day event.

Founded in 1992, the Torrance Education Foundation (TEF), an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity, promotes and financially supports academic excellence for students in the Torrance Unified School District from pre‐Kindergarten through graduation. TEF champions an inspirational, well‐rounded education for all young people served by the TUSD; recognizes outstanding teachers and education contributors; develops strategic alliances with business organizations, parents and the community; and cultivates innovation and curiosity among students of every age and grade.

“We are honored to receive this recognition for our work to benefit the young people in Torrance,” says TEF Board President Kevin O’Brien. “Our community members are really the ones to be congratulated for their generosity and their willingness to pitch in for all our kids in Torrance. We are proud to partner with TUSD to give students in Torrance exciting opportunities to learn and grow.”

The award recipients will visit the Assembly Floor and then will be honored at a luncheon at Sacramento’s Sheraton Grand Hotel, with presentations from former Senate President Pro Tempore [and Sacramento Mayor‐Elect] Darrell Steinberg, Assemblymember Rich Gordon, and Jan Masaoka, CEO of the California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits).

“Nonprofit organizations are vitally important to the economy and well‐being of California. But too often nonprofits are ‘hidden in plain sight.’ We are thrilled that the State Assembly has passed a resolution putting the spotlight on nonprofits as an economic power that uses that power for the common good. We congratulate all of the award recipients on being honored for the great work they do every day to make California a better place,” said Jan Masaoka, CEO of California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits), a statewide alliance of over 10,000 organizations, representing and promoting California’s growing nonprofit sector and working to bring the full power of nonprofits to strengthening communities.
