Clean Green Yard Machines Performance Report for 2009 Lawn Mower Trade-In Program by the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District January 2010 Clean Green Yard Machines Performance Report for 2009 Lawn Mower Trade-In Program By the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District January 2010 Clean Green Yard Machines 2009 (CGYM), part of the Air District’s Healthy Air Living initiative, began on April 22. CGYM 2009 was originally scheduled to expire on May 31 however; a slow economy provided the opportunity for an extension. The Air District continued to keep CGYM open until all funds are exhausted with the possibility of transforming this into a year-round program, provided funding continues to be available. As of January 1, 2010, CGYM funding from the 2009-year program has not yet been exhausted and the program remains active. This report includes the following: • History of Clean Green Yard Machines • How the Program works • Total program budget for the year • Total vouchers issued in 2009 • Total vouchers redeemed/mowers retired/mowers sold • Previous years’ total mowers sold • Rundown of all outreach efforts to promote program History of Clean Green Yard Machines CGYM has evolved and improved every maintained a partnership with this company year since it began in 2001. Through research as to how to hold a trade-in program without holding one-day events, the Air District discovered that recycling agencies in every Valley county were willing to accept retired gas mowers directly and issue verification to the participant, allowing them to order their new mower by phone. The Air District devised a program allowing residents to call, requesting participation in the program. The air District sends the caller a program voucher with instructions to turn in their old mower at a participating local recycler, have the recycler verify with a special code sticker affixed to the voucher and call Neuton directly to order to their new mower at a discount of more than 50 percent. Upon payment, Neuton delivers the mower directly to the resident’s home. Through the 2009 program, residents have the choice of a purchasing a 14-inch cordless Neuton mower (CE5) for $150 (regularly $399), or a 19-inch cordless electric mower (CE6) for $250 (regularly $499). Neuton offered the Air District the CE5 for $285. The participating Valley resident pays $150 and the Air District pays $135. The CE6 was offered at $100 more. Clean Green Yard Machines, part of the Healthy Air Living initiative, offers up to 62 percent off the purchase of cordless electric mowers in order to reduce air pollution caused by gas-burning lawn-care equipment. One gas mower can pollute as much as 40 newer-model cars and is one of the biggest polluters used at home. This year, the trade-in program offers a choice of two different mowers with the retirement of a gas mower: The Neuton CE5 14-inch mower for just $150, or the CE6 19-inch mower for just $250.

  • Transnational Radio: the Role of “La Hora Mixteca” in the Life of Oaxacan Indigenous Migrant Communities
Transnational Radio: The Role of “La Hora Mixteca” in the Life of Oaxacan Indigenous Migrant Communities By Edward Kissam and Anna Garcia Evaluation of the Oaxacalifornia Project (Rockefeller Foundation Grant # 2002 GI 027) Submitted by E. Kissam Associates, January 21, 2006 Introduction In October, 2002, the Rockefeller Foundation made a modest grant of $120,000 to cover the costs of hardware and installation of satellite equipment to link Radio Bilingue to the network of community public radio stations operated by the Comision de Desarollo Indigena (then the INI) in areas of Oaxaca and Guerrero state. The objectives of the project were to build on Radio Bilingue’s initial collaborative experience in transnational radio to create a new “Puente Oaxacalifornia”. The underlying idea was that this linkage would both inform Oaxacan migrants and strengthen their transnational communities. It was also hoped that this would represent another step forward in Radio Bilingue’s efforts to establish collaborative transnational relationships with Mexican public/community radio broadcasters to create a network of “radio sin fronteras”. This was an extraordinary proposition, to use satellite technology and community radio to link geographically separated areas throughout the Oaxaca-Guerrero indigenous communities’ migration circuit into a virtual transborder communication network, more or less configured to the “footprint” of migrants’ own travels, community and social networks. The current report is an evaluation of the impacts of the project—focused more on examining how it has affected the target population, Oaxacan indigenous communities with high levels of transnational migration, than on the organizational activities and processes involved in project implementation.

  • Dog Days of Summer Disaster Planning Revisited
July 18, 2016, Issue 508 Disaster Planning Revisited “There is no playbook for this and I trust no one will ever be able to write one.” That’s Cox WWKA/Orlando PD Drew Bland discussing circumstances most broadcasters – most Americans – wish never had to be addressed. Most recently Baton Rouge. Last week, Dallas. And the list grows: San Bernardino, Chattanooga, Charleston, to name a very few. Orlando, of course, endured a mass shooting at a local nightclub that killed 49 just last month (CAT 6/13). Given the shocking nature of the event, it’s easy to cede Bland’s point. He is, however, one of many broadcasters who believe that disaster planning, to the extent possible, goes a long way. Country Aircheck spoke to others with experience for thoughts on response procedures, which tragically now seem to need an update that includes mass shootings. Roles And Capabilities: Even with that new paradigm, the approach is substantially the same for disasters man-made or natural. Boston B Party: Capitol’s Luke Bryan (front, center) in Boston “The first thing you have to do is sit down with with (back, l-r) UMGN’s Royce Risser, WPOR/Portland, ME’s Jon the stakeholders and identify what your role Shannon and KP Entertainment’s Kerri Edwards; (front, l-r) Dan is going to be,” says veteran broadcaster and Halyburton WBWL’s Lance Houston, WKLB’s Mike Brophey and Ginny Rogers, American Red Cross public affairs volunteer the label’s Bobby Young and WOKQ/Portsmouth, NH’s JC Coffey. Dan Halyburton. “Look internally and ask who you can expect to be during a disaster, what resources you have, and who will respond and how.” Dog Days Of Summer iHeartMedia Hot AC KOSO/Modesto, CA flipped to Country “Playing a lot of ‘what if?’ is the only way as “92.9 The Big Dog” last week (CAT 7/1), giving Cumulus’ to think through your response,” says KFDI/ market-leading KATM its first direct competitor Wichita OM/PD Justin Case, whose station in recent memory.
