William Buick Born: July 22, 1988 in Norway Breeders' Cup Record: 13 William Buick Born: July 22, 1988 in Norway Breeders’ Cup Record: 13-1-1-1 | $2,088,000 • Norwegian William Buick won his first Breeders' Cup last year at Del Mar, guiding Wuheida (GB) to victory in the Filly and Mare Turf. The chestnut mare is trained by Charlie Appleby and owned by Godolphin Stables, for whom Buick rides first call. • He also has a second and a third in Breeders' Cup races, both with the same horse. He rode The Fugue (GB) to a second-place finish in the 2013 Breeders' Cup Turf, and the pair was third the year prior in the Filly and Mare Turf. • His first major win in the United States came aboard Debussy in the 2010 G1 Arlington Million. • Buick, who turned 30 in July, has become one of the leading riders in Europe and beyond. He is having his best year to date, with earnings over 4.4 million pounds and 80 winners. He started off this year strong, with multiple stakes wins in the UAE including the Gr 2 Dubai City of Gold and Gr 1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic, both with Hawkbill. • He also notched his first win in Hong Kong this spring with Pakistan Star, who won the QEII at Sha-Tin. • Other group one wins for Buick this year include the King's Stand Stakes with Blue Point, the Qatar Nassau Stakes and Prix de l'Opera Longines both with Wild Illusion, and the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes with Quorto. • Buick came by his talents honestly. His father Walter was a jockey, who left Great Britain in the 1970s to take Scandinavia by storm, becoming Norway's champion jockey eight times. He was also leading rider in Denmark one season, before moving to Germany and switching to training. • The young William, who was already involved at the racing stable of Andrew Balding before hitting his teen years, had also perfected his flying dismount – trademark of his hero Frankie Dettori. • Buick's dismount at age 12 was off the back of a couch, but it wasn't long before he graduated to launching off a winning horse's back. • His first win came on the Paul D’Arcy trained Bank On Benny at Salisbury on September 27, 2006 and by the end of the year he had ridden ten winners. He spent a stint with Todd Pletcher at Gulfstream the following year, honing his skills in the morning and riding the occasional longshot in the afternoon. • Back in Britain, he shared the champion apprentice jockey title with David Probert in 2008, after winning the Lester Award for Apprentice Jockey of the year in 2007 and 2008. • Buick landed his first group one victory in Canada in October of 2009, on Lahaleeb in the EP Taylor Stakes, and 2010 he became stable jockey for the Newmarket-based trainer John Gosden. • Since late 2014, Buick has been a contract rider for the globe-spanning operation Godolphin Racing. .
