NATIONAL COLLEGIATE MEN’S GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2016 Championship 2 History 4 All-Time Team Results 14 2016 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Oklahoma repeasts as national champions: Defend for 10. The mission statement has that driven the top-ranked Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team all season is officially outdated. Saturday night at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio, the Sooners scored 443.400, capping a second consecutive undefeated season and claiming the 10th NCAA championship in program history. Already a program laden with championship history, Oklahoma’s team total was good enough to secure a 10-point victory, the largest in NCAA history under the current scoring system, over second-place Stanford (434.050) and lay claim to its fourth set of back-to-back titles. In addition to the team title, the Sooners also won a pair of individual national titles. Freshman Yul Moldauer became the eighth Sooner in OU history to win the NCAA all-around title, and the first since Jake Dalton won it in 2012. Moldauer scored 89.100 and joins some illustrious company that includes Olympians Dalton and Bart Conner as well as current OU assistant coaches Taqiy Abdullah-Simmons and Steven Legendre. Junior Colin Van Wicklen also topped a podium Saturday night, winning the national title on floor with a score of 15.300. Van Wicklen had a huge night, scoring at least 14.800 on all three of his events and topping 15.200 in two of them. Just as it did in the prelims, Oklahoma started its night on floor. OU improved on its prelim performance by nearly a full point, scoring 73.600.

  • Season Preview Layout
CGA’s 2017 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Season Preview By: Logan Bradley 2017 will be defined as a chase. The Oklahoma Sooners will chase their third consecutive national championship, something that hasn’t been done since Nebraska won five in a row from 1979-83. Every other team in the NCAA will participate in their own chase to dethrone the Sooners. One thing’s for certain, each team faces an extremely uphill battle. Along with comprehensive team summaries, I’ve included some insight as to who the top competitors on each event might be come NCAA Championship time. NOTE: Something important to note for this upcoming season is a change in the code of points which will result in lower scoring. There will be four element groups instead of five, resulting in scores being .5 lower on each event compared to last year. For example, a 15.0 in 2016 will be a 14.5 this year. The only event that will differ is vault where a majority of the vaults performed will be .4 lower than last year. • All TOP RETURNING SCORERS’ numbers are based on 2016 season averages from roadtonationals.com. Must have competed a minimum of five routines to qualify. • All photos were taken by Jess Frankl. 1. NATIONAL COLLEGIATE MEN’S GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2017 Championship 2 History 4 All-Time Team Results 14 2017 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Oklahoma earns third straight national championship: Back-to-back-to-back. Once again the Sooner dynasty reigns over the gymnastics world. Saturday night at Christl Arena in West Point, New York, the Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team etched its legacy in the history books, notching a team score of 431.950 to claim its third consecutive NCAA national championship by 8.250 points over runner-up Ohio State. The Sooners are just the fourth team in history to do so since the NCAA began holding gymnastics championships in 1938 and the first since Nebraska did so from 1979 to 1983. The title is Oklahoma’s 11th overall, giving it the second most in NCAA history (Penn State, 12), and the eighth during the 18-year tenure of head coach Mark Williams. Williams is now tied with his old head coach from Nebraska, Francis Allen, for the second-most all-time by a head coach (Gene Wettstone, Penn State, 9). In addition to the team title, Yul Moldauer won individual titles on floor exercise and still rings and seven Sooners won a total of 22 All-America honors. Oklahoma’s championship caps a third straight perfect season. The Sooners have won every meet they have competed in since finishing second at the 2014 NCAA Championships. In that span Oklahoma has racked up a program best 76 straight wins while claiming three national titles, three conference titles and nine individual national titles.
