Buenos Aires, Junio de 2011 1 ESTUDIOS EMBRIOLÓGICOS SOBRE ALGUNAS GRAMÍNEAS NATIVAS ÚTILES (POACEAE) PRESENTES EN LA DEPRESIÓN DEL SALADO, PROVINCIA DE BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA. Resumen: El objetivo general de este trabajo fue estudiar el desarrollo del grano de polen, del megagametófito, el endosperma y el embrión, como así también la anatomía de las estructuras esporofíticas relacionadas con estos procesos, en diez taxones de Poaceae, correspondientes a las tres subfamilias (Pooideae, Chloridoideae y Panicoideae) más ricamente representadas en la región de la depresión del Salado, Provincia de Buenos Aires. Los objetivos particulares fueron: Describir la Microsporogénesis y la Microgametogénesis. Realizar el estudio ontogenético ultraestructural de los cuerpos de Ubisch con el fin de aportar datos que ayuden a dilucidar su posible función y participación en la formación de la pared del grano de polen. Describir la Megasporogénesis y Megagametogénesis. Realizar el estudio ultraestructural del saco embrionario pre- y post-fertilización, a fin de aportar datos sobre el rol que cumplen las antípodas. Describir la Endospermogénesis, la Embriogénesis, el desarrollo total de los tegumentos seminales y las capas del pericarpio del fruto. Realizar el estudio anatómico del óvulo y del microsporangio. Relacionar las características embriológicas particulares de los taxones con las subfamilias a las cuales pertenecen. Todas las especies estudiadas, a excepción de Paspalidium geminatum, presentan un desarrollo normal del grano de polen, el cual se libera en estadio tricelular. La ontogenia del megagametófito corresponde al tipo Polygonum, con antípodas haustoriales bien desarrolladas y en número variable de acuerdo a las especies. En Paspalidium geminatum se observó la formación de varios gametófitos femeninos en distintos estadios de desarrollo en un mismo óvulo. En Stenotaphrum secundatum y Melica brasiliana son pocos los óvulos que forman megagametófitos viables, y una gran cantidad de óvulos abortivos fue observada. Por lo tanto, estas tres especies podrían tener una tendencia a un desarrollo de tipo apomíctico. El presente trabajo constituye un aporte original debido a que nada se conocía previamente sobre la embriología de estas especies nativas de Argentina. También representa una contribución a favor del desarrollo socio-económico del país, pues aporta información sobre la reproducción de algunas gramíneas útiles, nativas de una zona relevante desde el punto de vista de la producción agropecuaria en la Provincia de Buenos Aires. Dichos datos podrán ser de aplicación para proyectos donde genetistas y otros investigadores se dediquen al mejoramiento de pastizales. Palabras claves: Poaceae, embriología, microsporogénesis, microgametogénesis, orbículas, polen, megasporogénesis, megagametogénesis, endospermogénesis, embrión, fruto. 2 EMBRYOLOGICAL STUDIES OF SOME USEFUL NATIVE GRASSES (POACEAE) PRESENT AT THE SALADO RIVER DEPRESSION, PROVINCE OF BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA. Abstract: The general goal of this work was to study the development of the pollen grain, the megagametophyte, the endosperm and the embryo as well as the anatomy of the sporophytic structures involved in these processes in ten taxa of the three subfamilies of Poaceae (Pooideae, Chloridoideae and Panicoideae) most richly represented in the region of the depression of the Salado river, Province of Buenos Aires. The particular objectives were to: Describe both Microsporogénesis and Microgametogenesis. Fulfil the anatomical study of the ovule as of the microsporangium. Study the ultra-structural ontogeny of the Ubisch bodies in order to contribute data that would help to dilucidate their feasible function and participation in the development of the pollen grain wall. Describe both Megasporogenesis and Megagametogenesis. Carry out the ultra-structural study of the embryo-sac right before and after fertilization with the purpose of contributing to the general knowledge of the performance played by the antipodal cells. Describe the Endospermogenesis, Embryogenesis as well as the whole development of the seminal teguments and layers of the fruit pericarp. Relate embryological characteristics of the taxa with the subfamilies to which they belong to. All the species studied, except Paspalidium geminatum, show a normal development of the pollen grain, which is released in a tri-cellular-stage. The ontogeny of the megagametophyte is of the Polygonum type, with well-developed haustorial antipodal cells and in changeable number according to the species. In Paspalidium geminatum the formation of several female gametophytes in different stages of development within a same ovule were observed. Otherwise, in Stenotaphrum secundatum and Melica brasiliana only a few ovules give rise to viable megagametophytes but instead a great amount of abortive ovules was noted. Therefore, these three species could tend towards an apomictic type of development. The present work constitutes an original contribution since nothing was previously known about the embryology of these native species from Argentina. Moreover, it represents a contribution to the social and economic development of the country due to the information given on the reproduction of some useful grasses, natural from an outstanding region in terms of the farming (and stockbreeding) production of the Province of Buenos Aires. Such data could be used by geneticists and other investigators conducting grass breeding projects. Anthers of ten species of Poaceae from the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina) were investigated with scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The orbicules can be defined as corpuscles of variable size that show the same electron-density, reaction to the dyes, autofluorescence and resistance to acetolysis as pollen exine does. The orbicules are randomly dispersed on the inner anther locule and they are often attached to a tapetal membrane. In this study, four different types and four subtypes of orbicules were identified. We conclude that the different orbicules types described in this work are representative of the studied tribes, and we suggest that the orbicules morphology may be a useful character in systematic studies. Resumen: Anteras de diez especies de Poaceae de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina) fueron investigadas con microscopio electrónico de barrido y de transmisión. Las orbículas pueden ser definidas como corpúsculos de tamaño variable que muestran la misma electrodensidad, reacción a los colorantes, autofluorescencia y resistencia a la acetólisis que la exina del grano de polen. Las orbículas se encuentran revistiendo el interior del lóculo de la antera, a menudo adheridas a una membrana tapetal. En este estudio se identificaron cuatro tipos y cuatro subtipos diferentes de orbículas. Se concluye que los distintos tipos morfológicos de orbículas descriptos en este trabajo son representativos de cada una de las tribus estudiadas, por lo que se sugiere que la morfología de estos corpúsculos podría ser un carácter utilizado en estudios sistemáticos.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The Paititi Natural Reserve is located in the southeastern part of the Tandilia mountain range (Buenos Aires province, Argentina). With the aim of recording the floristic richness of Sierra Chica, an untouched area of the reserve, all vas- cular plants were inventoried and categorized by family, status, and life form. Altogether, 364 taxa from 72 families were found, with the most predominant families being Poaceae (20.7%), Asteraceae (20.1%), and Fabaceae (5.8%). We found 95 adventive species, 4 cosmopolitan, and 265 native. The most abundant life forms were hemicryptophytes (33.1%), therophytes (30.6%), and criptophytes (22.6%); the therophytes were mostly represented by adventive spe- cies. We also found species that were known from Buenos Aires province but not from mountainous areas. Despite being a small area within Argentina, Sierra Chica constitutes a valuable refuge for native flora of the Tandilia mountain range system, which is in danger of being affected by exotic plants.

However the understanding of grass phytolith variance and its implications to plant systematics is doubtless. In the present study phytoliths of the lateral shoots (leaves) of nine, globally distributed Poa species (Pooideae – Poaceae) are described. Phytoliths were recovered from Poa specimens by the dry ashing technique. Altogether 6223 disarticulated phytoliths were counted (approximately 500–700 phytoliths per species) in 54 plant samples, which cover six shoots of nine species. Not only the relative frequency of each morphotype was calculated, but measurements were conducted to determine the biogenic silica content of Poa lateral shoots.

San Martín 4453, 1417 Buenos Aires, Argentina Summary 1 The spatial pattern of vegetation heterogeneity across different scales may indicate the major environmental controls on vegetation structure, and thus guide strategies for the conservation of biodiversity. 2 We analysed cross-scale vegetation patterns in a 90 000-km2 area of natural grasslands in the Flooding Pampa, Argentina. We assessed the contribution of regional (latitudinal) and landscape (topographic) patterns of species turnover to overall heterogeneity using data from 749 censuses. 3 A large proportion of the variation in species composition across the entire region was observed at very fine spatial scales (0.1–10 km2), associated with subtle topographic features and soil salinity gradients. Latitudinal variation played a secondary role. 4 Species turnover among stands occupying different landscape positions at the same latitude was 50% greater than among inventories encompassing two degrees of latitude. The fine-grain heterogeneity determined that an area of 10 km2 was often sufficient to include 50% of all vascular plant species of the region. 5 Although a large proportion (nearly 70%) of the vascular flora was composed of rare (satellite) species that occurred in less than 10% of the samples, few core species (i.e. those occurring in more than 90% of the samples) were seen at any scale of analysis.
