I’d prefer not to be labeled. I’m a novelist, period. An American nov- elist»1. Per Frank Lentricchia, DeLillo appartiene a una classe di scrittori «who conceive their vocation as an act of cultural criticism; who invent in order to intervene; whose work is a kind of anatomy, an effort to represent their culture in its totality»3. 3 F.Lentricchia, The American Writer as Bad Citizen, in Id. (ed.), Introducing Don DeLillo, Duke Univer- sity Press, Durham 1991, p. 2. Davide Barbuscia, Le prime opere narrative di Don DeLillo. Rappresentazione del tempo e poetica beckettiana dell’istante ISBN 978-88-6655-493-6 (online), CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 IT, 2013 Firenze University Press Le prime opere narrative di Don DeLillo Characters do not think, they cogitate; they do not talk, they engage in dialectic and deliver endless monologues about the novel’s major themes. […] life seems to exist so that we can theorize about it. […] DeLillo’s people don’t talk about things, […] they talk about the nature of things4.

Bates Veronica Dujon Portland State University 2017 © 2017 Erin Katherine Goodling Abstract How does progressive change happen in so-called sustainable cities? In this dissertation, I present findings from a three year-long ethnographic investigation of grassroots organizing in Portland, Oregon, a city at the leading edge of the green urbanism movement. This research centered on an extended case study of the Portland Harbor Community Coalition (PHCC). PHCC is an alliance of grassroots groups working to ensure that cleanup of the Portland Harbor Superfund Site benefits those who have been most impacted by pollution.
