DeDicattons of tfte Cfjutcbcs of ©ometsetsftire. BY THE KEY. E. H. BATES, M.A HE late Mr. W illiam Long contributed to the seventeenth “L volume of the Proceedings in 1871 a classified list of the Church Dedications given by Ecton in his Thesaurus Rerum Ecclesiasticarum, 1742. As Editor of the Bath and Wells Diocesan Kalendar my attention has been frequently drawn, from my own knowledge as well as by numerous correspon- dents, to the many errors and gaps in that list. It became plainly necessary to go behind the Thesaurus to the original sources of information. And here I may be allowed to repro- duce what I have already stated in the preface to the Kalendar for 1905. It should be clearly understood that there is no authoritative list in existence. Among the Public Becords are two works known as Pope Nicholas’ Taxatio of 1291, and the Valor Ec- clesiasticus of 27 Henry VIII (1536), containing the names of all parishes in England and Wales. These were primarily drawn up to ascertain the value of the benefices, and only in- cidentally, as in the case of towms with many churches, are the dedications added. The latter work, to which the title of V^ahr Ecclesiasticus or Liber Regis is generally given, was first printed in 1711 by J ohn Ecton. His preface contains a very interesting account of the early work of the Queen Anne’s Bounty Fund, of which he was Receiver, and of the serious state of affairs in the large towns which led to its foundation.

  • Stoke St Mary Parish Council Response to Highways England Ltd Proposal to Improve the A358 from Taunton to Southfields Roundabout
Stoke St Mary Parish Council response to Highways England Ltd proposal to improve the A358 from Taunton to Southfields Roundabout Introduction: The consultation period for this road scheme began on 28 March 2017 and will close on 16 July 2017. The parish of Stoke St .Mary will be the parish most affected by a proposed six kilometre, dual carriageway, which will run from one end of the parish at Ashe Farm to the other near to Taunton Racecourse. We submit that this consultation is flawed and should be halted and recommenced with other scheme options and a substantial increase in technical detail made available, to enable a meaningful consultation to take place. Letters of objection to the form of this consultation were sent to the Secretary of State for Transport and to the C.E.O. of Highways England Ltd. (HE) dated 17 June 2017. At the time of writing those letters remain unanswered. The Current Proposal: There are many issues emanating from the current Highways England Ltd proposals and we will deal with them as individual items as listed in HE Technical Appraisal Report (TAR), Section 2.1. RIS ObJectives. • Making the network safer: • Improving user satisfaction: • Supporting the smooth flow of traffic • Encouraging economic growth • Delivering better environmental outcomes • Helping cyclists, walkers and other vulnerable users of the network • Achieving real efficiency Firstly we contend that HE have achieved none of their strategy obJectives: Safety: According to the TAR supplied by HE, the proposed route actually increases accident costs. In the present climate why would any business offer a solution, which does not result in a safe solution for the public? User Satisfaction: We have grave concerns that the traffic information supplied with the TAR is out of date and therefore inaccurate.

  • Seven Sowers Benefice Profile 2020
Seven Sowers Benefice Profile 2020 sevensowers.org.uk Putting mission and evangelism at the heart of all that we do Welcome to the Seven Sowers Benefice Profile We offer a warm welcome from the church wardens and parishioners of the Benefice. The seven rural parishes that comprise the Benefice are set in a wonderful part of Somerset, just south of Taunton. Here we set out a description of our vision, which we hope will form a good basis in helping you discern if God is calling you to serve Him in the Seven Sowers Benefice. Clearly the pandemic has had and will have an impact on church as a whole. As our Archdeacon, Simon Hill, observed, the Benefice has a number of very committed people who have endeavoured to witness effectively through this time, where the emphasis has been that the church is open, even if the buildings are closed. It is clear that this Benefice will need someone who is able to take forward what has been learned during this time, is flexible in their approach and is able to harness the gifts of people in the parishes in the spirit of Setting God’s People Free: the profile needs to be read in the light of this. We will be looking for someone who is going to be able to address positively the issues the churches in this Benefice, like all churches, are going to have to face in the immediate future. The Profile which follows sets out how we see ourselves (and how others see us) in normal time.
