DIRECTOR’S NOTE “When you see a guy reach for stars in the sky, You can bet that he’s doing it for some doll” —Frank Loesser Guys and Dolls, one of America’s most beloved and enduring musicals, has also been dubbed by critics as “a PERFECT musical comedy.” This musical is based on the stories of Damon Runyon, known for his ability to identify with the outsider and those who lived on the edge. His stories pro- vided an enticing picture of celebrity and criminal culture during the 1920s and ‘30s. Guys and Dolls may be the “PERFECT musical comedy”; how- ever, with its sinners, gambling, dated sexist dialogue, lying and manipu- lations, can it be the perfect musical for children to learn in 2019? Guys and Dolls is really a story about love, and the transformational power of love. The gamblers LOVE gambling and it fills them with joy. The mis- sion folks LOVE God and are so moved by their faith that they endlessly march through Times Square trying to save sinners. Adelaide LOVES Nathan so much she is willing to endure a 14-year engagement and never-ending cold to stay with him. Sky LOVES Sarah enough to sacrifice gambling for her. The young actors in this production LOVE to perform onstage and have such passion for performing together! Their passion for theater translates into the bound- less energy that is essential for bringing the magic and energy of Guys and Dolls to the stage. Is this the perfect musical for children in 2019? Absolutely! A “Hot Shooter” thank you to our creative team! For the extraordinary singing and vocal arrangements you will hear today, we have our Music Director, the exquisite Harriet Fraser to thank. Harriet, working with you is the ultimate luxury! Hayden Roush, our steadfast and whole-hearted assistant director, has graced us with his expertise and organizational skills; these skills have been essential in preparing 38 children in three separate casts for the show, with only six weeks of rehearsals! We couldn’t have done this without you, Hayden! Emma Green, while home from NYU, brought her gleaming sunshine and choreography to shine upon us! Tricia Taper, our special guest teacher, you always bring the sparkle, you are the sprinkles and cherry on top! Rachel Howe-Mixon, thank you for helping out on music and gorgeous vocals. It is always a joy to have you here. Riley Stoler and Ella Zarrow, our creative and generous Dance Cap- tains. You both have given so much of yourselves, on and off-stage! We are all so grateful! Dolly Phillips and Susan Jackman, our patient, compassionate and industrious producers, we are all so grateful for all that you have done to have us all prepared! — Luck be a Lady tonight!!
