RECREATION INFO (949) 248-3530 2 Dana Point: OUR TOWN Dana Point by the Numbers This new regular newsletter feature is intended to share interesting facts and tidbits about the Dana Point community. This edition is focused on the numbers. The City of Dana Point was incorporated in 1989, 100 years after the County of Orange was established in 1889. Dana Point has more hotel rooms than any other coastal Orange County city. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is a philosophy that the City of Dana Point embraces and puts into practice daily to exhibit leadership in governance in all aspects of City business and functionality. A long-term goal behind this environmental philosophy is to address plastic---all kinds of plastic--- that are persistent in our environment. All the plastic ever made is still around, in landfills, floating as ocean debris, on beaches and scattered across the land. As a coastal community, Dana Point has a strong interest in protecting the ocean, our local beaches and the marine environment which all contribute to the unique quality of life enjoyed in Dana Point. Dana Point’s City Council has taken steps to help protect our beaches and oceans by reducing overall urban blight such as litter from plastic bags and Styrofoam. On February 21, 2012 and March 6, 2012, respectively, the Dana Point City Council approved Ordinances restricting Styrofoam take-out food service containers (effective date October 1, 2012) and single-use plastic carry-out bags at local retail establishments (effective date April 1, 2013 for the defined large retail establishments and October 1, 2013 for all other retail establishments excluding restaurants). With the adopted restrictions becoming effective within the next 6 to 18 months, this will allow local businesses time to exhaust their existing inventories of Styrofoam and plastic bags. During this transition time, Dana Point residents will begin to see changes taking place to achieve the City’s goal of eliminating these products all together from our streets, creeks and beaches. Some helpful hints to help residents adjust to the upcoming changes: Remember…… R + E + D + U + C + E Reduce the use of single use bags and Styrofoam to prevent litter within our city and to protect our most valuable natural resources. Encourage and compliment the retail vendor’s use of reusable carryout bags when shopping, and biodegradable food service containers when dining at your favorite restaurants. Discourage the usage of paper bags at local retailers (approximately 14 million trees are cut down annually to make paper bags) by bringing your own reusable bag when shopping in town. Understand that only thin single-use plastic bags at the point-of-sale at checkout will be restricted. In other words, plastic bags for produce, meat, fish, bulk food (i.e.”bags-on-a-roll”), newspapers, dry-cleaning and pet waste are not affected by the plastic bag restriction. Additionally, Dana Point restaurants are excluded from the plastic bag restriction. Styrofoam ice chests and coolers intended for reuse are also exempt from the restriction. Close the loop and buy recycled! By purchasing reusable bags made from recycled content, such as plastic bottles, you are helping to reduce waste. Our purchasing choices at the checkout stand maintain a demand for recycled content products. The only way to bring our resources full circle, and close the loop, is if we buy products or use products with a high post-consumer recycled content. Eliminate waste and litter in our community: Single-use plastic bags and Styrofoam are intended for one-time use for customers to carry their purchases from the store or food service establishment. FACT: Less than 5% of the approximately 24 billion plastic bags used in California are recycled. FACT: Since Styrofoam is not biodegradable, its litter remains indefinitely in the environment where it breaks up into small pieces that disperse widely onto the land

and into the sea harming marine wildlife. www.danapoint.org Businesses will not be required by the Ordinance to charge a fee for providing a paper or thick plastic bag to customers who don’t bring their own reusable bags. However, the businesses themselves may choose to charge a bag fee or give a credit or rebate to customers who bring their reusable bags with them as an incentive to help us improve our habits. Don’t forget your reusable bags when you shop in Dana Point. What Happens Next? During the implementation grace periods for the Plastic Bag and Styrofoam restrictions, outreach and education programs will be established to further assist our local businesses to better understand the restrictions and what it means for each of them. Informational FAQ’s flyers, advertisements in our local papers, updates within our Community News publications and community meetings are being planned to help educate both residents and our retailers about the restrictions and steps that can be taken to maintain the integrity of our ocean waters and beaches, and to maintain and beautify Dana Point’s infrastructure and neighborhoods.
