2013 Burgess Cellars Estate 1.5Lproduct-pdf - , Napa Valley CA - 92pts: A Favorite of Parker and Galloni! Why We're Drinking It Burgess Cellars: Creating wines with mountain distinction since 1972!

WINERY RANCH VINEYARD: This vineyard faces west on the side of Howell Mountain and has a slope averaging 22%. The volcanic soil is called “Tuff” which is compressed volcanic ash. The rocky soil drains very well allowing the grapes to achieve full maturity. This produces small berries providing intense flavor which is the Burgess hallmark. Hot days and cool nights mixed with the unique topography provide a premium mountainous flavor to all our wines. The vineyard sits comfortably in the frost-free zone above Saint Helena in Napa Valley.

The Story to Know Steven Burgess, President and Vintner, was actually born during the winery’s first harvest!

Steven Burgess did not always work in the family business. He earned degrees in Agricultural Systems Management and Agricultural Business as well as a Wine-Marketing Certificate. Steven was a high school physics teacher, wine representative, night barman and restorer of vintage trailers. In 2004 his father, Tom, persuaded him to return to Burgess Cellars. In 2013, Steven was promoted to President of Burgess Cellars making it a true Second Generation family business.

In addition to many aspects of managing the vineyards and winery, he can often be seen doing some carpentry, welding, repairing a vehicle, mending 1800’s stone walls or helping with the harvest. Steven fills his rare spare time cycling, camping, tinkering and cleaning up after his kids. He serves on the Wine Service Co-op Board of Directors and is a Volunteer Fire Fighter for the local station.

Reviews The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (at a very fair price, by the way) has beautiful blackcurrant fruit, blackberry, underlying earth and spice, medium to full body, a long finish and sweet, moderate tannin. A rather classic example of Napa viticulture and still available at a shockingly realistic price. This beautiful wine is young, but reflects the greatness of 2013, and should promise to improve and evolve for another 15-20 years. --Wine Advocate The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Vineyards is a powerful, burly wine. Lavender, menthol, sage, tobacco, earthiness and plum give the 2013 much of its brooding, intense personality. Despite its considerable intensity, the 2013 has relatively soft tannins for the year, so it should drink well with minimal cellaring. The 2013 is only 75% Cabernet Sauvignon. A good dose of Merlot (12%), (11%) and (2%) round out the blend. --Vinous
