The Unfolding Journey of the Cultural Crossing

Early in its design phase, the remarkable setting for the Cultural Crossing expansion reminded Portland Japanese Garden Curator Sadafumi Uchiyama of the concept of satoyama, a Japanese term describing the transition zone between the wild mountain foothills and the arable flat land. Sato means arable and livable land, and yama means hill or mountain.

Water hypnotically starts your journey from the stair- stepped waterfalls around the Welcome Center to the pools (see photo 2) along the zig-zag path. Just beyond the Antique Gate, you hear the unseen bubbling spring at the base of the hill.

6 THE GARDEN PATH Continuing your ascent across Sheila’s Bridge under the cantilevered Umami Café, you come to the upper creek with scattered broken boulders of basalt imply- ing the wildness of the mountain landscape to come.

Uchiyama says the primary binding element of this- journey is water as the “source of life” which has so much symbolism for both Japan and Portland. The Japanese Way of Tea provides a powerful lesson in how we should live in harmony with nature. Its principles of Wa-Kei-Sei-Jaku (harmony, respect, purity, and tran- quility) have informed the design of Japanese gardens since the 15th century. Tea culture teaches wisdom and is manifested in plants, the abundant moisture of the rainy northwest climate, and the great Columbia River.

The four principles of tea are related to the flow of water; the flow of wisdom from the Japanese Garden “ at its highest point, from our rooftops, under Sheila’s bridge, and down through the Entry Garden. It ulti- 2 mately meets the force of life; the mighty Columbia," said Uchiyama.

Water has played an important role in Uchiyama’s life. He was born in Kurume, a small town on the south- ern Japanese island of Kyushu. The famous Takachiho Gorge near Uchiyama’s hometown inspired him to design the Jubitz Oregon Terrace (see photo 3). It is one of the few places in the world with naturally formed columnar basalt.

3 When I see basalt, that’s where my mind goes, but I never tried in a conscious way to equate it to the “ Takachiho Gorge (see photo 1). It’s where I am most fa- miliar with columns of basalt. So when I saw it, some- how my brain registered my upbringing. I was probably following that as a design guideline,” he said.

His vision of the overall site design and new gardens was to create a subtle unfolding journey from the caco- phonic noise of modern life to the peaceful tranquility of the existing garden oasis.

I realized at the end of the process what was guiding me. I didn’t necessarily try to recreate or mimic those “ features, but somehow, maybe subconsciously I was following that journey of water.”

Garden Workshops: Come to Understand

A visit to the Garden can evoke many feelings: serenity, joy, and often curiosity. It brings about questions like, “how did that pine get its beautiful contours?” and “how did they craft that bamboo fence?” While hearing an explanation is certain- ly enlightening, a hands-on learning experience of actually doing a task can leave a more profound impression.

Giving enthusiasts a sense of a Japanese gardener’s craft through garden workshops is part of the Garden’s dedica- tion to providing educational programming that cultivates a 1 deeper understanding of the Japanese garden and its related cultural practices. The garden workshops cover topics in- cluding pine and maple pruning, bamboo fence construction, nobedan (pavement construction), and the New Year’s tradition of kadomatsu.

All of the workshops are taught by Garden staff. Not only can they explain the skills and techniques for the given subject, but they can draw firsthand examples for explanation from the Garden itself.

Because the instructors are dedicated to providing a learn- ing experience grounded in authenticity, materials for these workshops can be difficult or time-consuming to procure. 2 Further, the combination of lectures and hands-on experience requires a low student-instructor ratio, so the number of par- ticipants is strictly limited for each event. Sometimes it isn’t possible to get a space on the first try. Participant feedback, though, suggests it’s worth the wait.

Portland architect and longtime Garden member, Paige Goga- nian attended the 2017 bamboo fence construction workshop and said the experience surpassed her expectations.

The hands-on approach and camaraderie created by staff allowed me to learn with my entire body, not just my brain.

1 “ The workshop was a challenge, a pleasure, and ultimately, Jonathan Ley 2 Tyler Quinn very satisfying and enlightening.

Garden Expressions: 2018 Public Lecture Series

With the first days of spring comes a brisk current of fresh ideas, courtesy of Garden Expressions, the Garden's public lecture series. On March 15, author, pruning expert, and sculptor Jake Hobson (see photo 1) will contrast eastern and western approaches to pruning in a thought-provoking discussion of how culture influences the way we shape the plants in our garden. Hobson, one of the U.K.’s leading topiary and pruning specialists, presents a unique approach to his craft shaped by his time in Japan and his creative back- ground as a sculptor. Hobson’s book, Niwaki: Pruning, Training and Shaping Trees the Japanese Way (Timber) will be for sale and signing at the event.

On April 19, architect Balazs Bognar (see photo 2) of 1 Kengo Kuma and Associates will visit the Garden to reflect on how the architectural forms and philoso- phies of the past can be reinterpreted to determine the future design of the buildings in which we live and work. Bognar will explore themes of materials, details, methods, processes, and spatial experience to propose a design approach for generations to come. The event offers the rare opportunity to experience the Garden’s new spaces while hearing Bognar articulate the ideas that inspired them.

The Garden Expressions public lecture series is present- ed by the International Japanese Garden Training Center and is made possible with support from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership. Jake Hobson's 2 lecture is presented by Hasegawa Kogyo Co., Ltd. Balazs Bognar's lecture is presented by Hacker Architects.
