Job Summary

Entry level painting, glazing and plastering work in the painting, glazing, plastering, and finishing of surfaces in classrooms, hallways and other areas in buildings at various School District locations. Employees in this class repair and maintain both interior and exterior finishing. Work involves the alteration, maintenance, and repair of school buildings and grounds.

Essential Functions

 Performs a variety of routine and difficult painting tasks. Cleans and repairs work area by sanding, scraping, plastering, filling and touching up work area. Mixes paints to correspond with and match existing colors.  May perform sign painting and lettering. May perform varnishing and glazing work involving the removal of broken or old glass, puttying, cutting glass and installing new glass.  Mixes plastering materials; builds and disassembles scaffolding; performs duties from a scaffold where necessary.  Performs a variety of tasks which include plastering, grouting, rough casting, tile work, lathing, and plaster ; removes plaster; prepares surfaces for plastering; patches plaster walls and ceilings; applies a variety of plaster finishes. Removes and replaces broken or cracked glass, both inside and outside of School District buildings.  Cleans work areas after construction or repair work has been performed; cleans and maintains tools and equipment.  Ensures that materials and equipment are kept in proper condition and are protected against damage and deterioration; maintains adequate safety measures; may estimate, order and transport necessary materials to complete work order(s) at assigned location.  Oversees the work of trainees in the trade.  Prepares reports indicating work done.

Other Functions

 Performs incidental work as required.

Minimum Requirements

 Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.  Three years of experience in the appropriate trade’s area as an apprentice

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods and procedures governing the painting, gazing and plastering trades.  Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades.  Considerable knowledge of the material used in the trades.  Skill in the care and use of the tools of the trades.  Ability to accurately follow oral and written instructions.  Ability to prepare records and reports of work performed.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and superiors.
