It is currently thought that complex formation is initiated by Pum, which directly binds the hb mRNA and subsequently recruits Nos and Brat. Here we report that, in addition to Pum, Brat also directly interacts with the hb mRNA. We identify Brat-binding sites distinct from the Pum consensus motif and show that RNA binding and translational repression by Brat do not require Pum, suggesting so far unrecognized Pum-independent Brat functions.

We lovingly refer to them as the “car cats” because they’d been living in a car with their previous owner. Once appointed to Paws, we began to interact with the cats. Some were immediately ready for adoption while others needed one-on-one time. Most of the cats have come around to love people but a couple still only trust a handful of volunteers. We have had success adopting 7 of the cats. Two of the remaining cats, unfortunately, had to be euthanized due to incurable illnesses. We still have 6 cats available for adoption. They are Tory, Josie, Patterson, Jamison, Bella, and Mallory. One of our members has adopted two of the car cats and he loves them dearly. He wants the others to find the homes they deserve, so he has pre-paid the adoption fees of the six remaining car cats (as well as Keeva, another cat he has come to adore). We will still go through the adoption approval process, but the cats will be free to the families who adopt them. If you know someone interested in any of these sweet cats, please let us know.     RaboDirect PRO12 : PREVIEW 2012/13 Round 18: 22ND & 23RD March 2013 ROUND 18 PREVIEWS With just five rounds left to decide which teams will contest the Play-Offs, there is a new leader of the RaboDirect PRO12 with Glasgow Warriors taking over the mantle from Ulster, whilst for the fourth round in succession, Ospreys swapped places with Scarlets in the Play-Off Zone. Three of those teams are in action on Friday night; Ulster traveling to Edinburgh, Ospreys hosting Welsh rivals Newport Gwent Dragons, and Scarlets in Italy to face Zebre. Edinburgh can do their Scottish neighbours, Warriors, a favour if they can defeat Ulster however their record against the Ulstermen is not great. Meanwhile Ospreys and Scarlets must both be looking to come away with maximum points from opponents who are sitting at the wrong end of the table in their bids to reach the Play-Offs. The leaders, Glasgow Warriors, are not in action until Saturday, and are the only one of the potential Play-Off teams to face another side from the top half of the table when the visit Leinster at the RDS. Munster will also be looking for maximum points in the All-Irish clash against Connacht if they are to make a final push for the knockout stages. With just two points separating the top three teams in the table, whilst it is even closer for the final Play Off spot, there is definitely all to play for still as the RaboDirect PRO12 enters its closing stages. The invited artists, Rabiya Choudhry, Rob Churm, Craig Coulthard, Malcy Duff, Hideyuki Katsumata and Sofia Sita, have each visited the DC Thomson archives and are exhibiting their own individual takes on the rich cultural history of our city’s publishing. The exhibition features murals, prints, drawings, sculpture and video alongside archive material. ARTISTS IN THE EXHIBITION RABIYA CHOUDHRY Edinburgh-based artist Rabiya Choudhry’s work takes inspiration from childhood memories and subconscious dreams. She has created new work for the exhibition loosely based on her own family and inspired by DC Thomson’s riotous comic strip The Numskulls, about a team of tiny human-like technicians who live inside people’s heads and run their bodies and minds. Choudhry’s own comic creation, The Coconuts, is the basis for a new pair of paintings in homage to The Numskulls. The paintings are titled dream baby dream and houses for the holy, in reference to songs by the bands Suicide and Led Zeppelin respectively.

  • Open Letter from Episcopal Bishops
    “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers for by doing so, some have entertained angels unawares.” (HEBREWS 13:1) President Donald Trump and Members of Congress, As bishops of the Episcopal Church we implore you not to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, known as DACA. To do so would endanger the lives of thousands of young people and their families and run contrary to the faith and moral traditions of our country. It is unfair to threaten the well-being of young people who arrived in our country as children through no choice of their own. Ending DACA without a similar replacement program will force these young people to face the future in this country with little access to education and employment, and ultimately, could very well lead to sending them to countries where they did not grow up, have few support structures, may not even speak the language and may be vulnerable to violence and persecution. Any of these scenarios, we believe, is cruel. The alternative for us as a country is to move forward, to celebrate and benefit from the presence of these ‘Dreamers’ and to provide a pathway to citizenship that enables them to remain and strengthen our country. The Episcopal Church has long advocated for bipartisan comprehensive immigration reforms that prioritize family unity and humanitarian concerns. It is time for Congress to develop long-term solutions for immigrant families. In front of most of the Episcopal Churches across the country is a sign that says, ‘The Episcopal Church Welcomes You.’ We have this sign because we are followers of the way of Jesus of Nazareth, and our Christian tradition shares with many other faith bodies the absolute importance of welcoming the foreigner in our midst.
