As ‘Aborigines’ (Indigenous, or First Nation peoples) our stories also become a form of resistance to the taking on of identities based on stories told about us by writers (historians, anthropologists, journalists) from cultures other than our own. The argument of this thesis is that strategies of colonisation – oppression, domination, and genocide – that were and still are perpetrated against Aborigines result in the living out of ‘secret’ lives. This is how we have survived and how our ancient culture has endured. My thesis encompasses the secret life of a Goenpul man in modern Queensland. It is based on my experiences of living and interacting in two worlds - one brutally harsh and public and the other secret and loving. The way that I tell stories in this thesis is in ‘memoir’ form, which is related to the autobiographic genre of the Western literary tradition. Unlike the autobiography, the memoir does not seek to encompass the lifespan of its author, nor does it seek to communicate his or her personality. The memoir is a form of writing often used by people in public life, but these are mostly considered to be self-serving, and do not stand as record until thoroughly critiqued by an ‘expert’ from the field of political and/or social science. Some see the memoir as a ‘mongrel’ form (Hampel, interviewed by Wexler, 1996) somewhere half way between fact and fiction. Whereas the autobiographical genre (provided that it is accompanied by or embedded within an appropriately researched social, cultural and historical context) is gaining acceptance within the Western academy as a legitimate research methodology known as ‘auto-ethnography’ (Sparkes, 2002), this is not the case with the ‘memoir’ form that I have chosen as my ‘methodology’. So as to gain acceptance for the results of my study, my stories are accompanied by selected contextual explanations about phenomena that have been written by Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars in the Western academic tradition. I also refer to writings about Aborigines in journalistic or other generic styles that have been ‘authorised’ by their inclusion as evidence in scholarly works by experts. iii In defense of my chosen story-telling style, I argue that the memoir is an appropriate approach because my Master’s study is not just about what happened, but also about why I remember what happened. Warning This thesis includes references to Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander people and Elders to have passed on. It contains content that some readers may find distressing and/or disturbing.     Report on: Erosion at Cloherty’s Peninsular, Moreton Island 1.0 Introduction This report has been prepared by the Coastal Management Unit of Environment Planning for Moreton Bay Marine Park Operations to assess the coastal processes affecting the eastern shoreline of Cloherty’s Peninsular, Moreton Island. Erosion of this beach has exposed a disused landfill site on a reserve (Lot 51 on SL8794) located east of the Kooringal Township. The purpose of this assessment is to investigate channel migration and other coastal processes that may be contributing to erosion of the subject beach. The assessment will assess the likely rate of erosion over the short to medium term and provide some advice on the likely long term prospects for this beach. 2.0 Site Description The study site is the eastern beach of Cloherty’s Peninsular, Moreton Island between Mirapool to the north and Reeders Point to the south (refer Figure 1). This beach has a south-easterly aspect and is exposed to waves from the east to north-east sector. The site is protected from the prevailing south-easterly waves by North Stradbroke Island. The site is influenced by the tidal channels within South Passage, the entrance to Moreton Bay between North Stradbroke and Moreton Islands. South Passage is influenced by two main channels, the Rous and Rainbow Channels. The more dominate Rainbow Channel has a north-south orientation and runs along the western foreshore of North Stradbroke Island and along the eastern foreshore of Moreton Island. The Rous Channel is orientated roughly in an east-west direction and joins the Rainbow Channel approximately halfway between Moreton and North Stradbroke Islands.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Southern Queensland ePrints [2005] ANZLH E-Journal Traditional law and Indigenous Resistance at Moreton Bay 1842-1855 LIBBY CONNORS* On the morning of 5 January 1855 when the British settlers of Moreton Bay publicly executed the Dalla-Djindubari man, Dundalli, they made sure that every member of the Brisbane town police was on duty alongside a detachment of native police under their British officer, Lieutenant Irving. Dundalli had been kept in chains and in solitary for the seven months of his confinement in Brisbane Gaol. Clearly the British, including the judge who condemned him, Sir Roger Therry, were in awe of him. The authorities insisted that these precautions were necessary because they feared escape or rescue by his people, a large number of whom had gathered in the scrub opposite the gaol to witness the hanging. Of the ten public executions in Brisbane between 1839 and 1859, including six of Indigenous men, none had excited this much interest from both the European and Indigenous communities.1 British satisfaction over Dundalli’s death is all the more puzzling when the evidence concerning his involvement in the murders for which he was condemned is examined. Dundalli was accused of the murders of Mary Shannon and her employer the pastoralist Andrew Gregor in October 1846, the sawyer William Waller in September 1847 and wounding with intent the lay missionary John Hausmann in 1845. In the first two cases the only witnesses were Mary Shannon’s five year old daughter and a “half- caste” boy living with Gregor whose age was uncertain but described as about ten or eleven years old.

This inquiry has three primary components: the emergence of an urban-based Aboriginal ontology, the colonial archive and its ambivalent role in Aboriginal cultural healing and contemporary cultural heritage, and an interrogation of the conceptual tension between ontological being and becoming in the context of Aboriginality today. I ask the question: What does it mean for me, disconnected from traditional material cultural practices, to “authenticate” my life and cultural identity, through reclaiming and replicating archival objects? These objects were created in the context of functional and/or ceremonial practice, under colonisation became objects of ethnographic curiosity and taxonomy, and are increasingly objects of contemporary art and contemporary cultural heritage.

    SOUTHWARD MOVEMENT OF WATER – THE WATER WAYS A thesis submitted by Dale Wayne Kerwin For the award of Doctor of Philosophy 2020 Abstract This thesis explores the acculturation of the Australian landscape by the First Nations people of Australia who named it, mapped it and used tangible and intangible material property in designing their laws and lore to manage the environment. This is taught through song, dance, stories, and paintings. Through the tangible and intangible knowledge there is acknowledgement of the First Nations people’s knowledge of the water flows and rivers from Carpentaria to Goolwa in South Australia as a cultural continuum and passed onto younger generations by Elders. This knowledge is remembered as storyways, songlines and trade routes along the waterways; these are mapped as a narrative through illustrations on scarred trees, the body, engravings on rocks, or earth geographical markers such as hills and physical features, and other natural features of flora and fauna in the First Nations cultural memory. The thesis also engages in a dialogical discourse about the paradigm of 'ecological arrogance' in Australian law for water and environmental management policies, whereby Aqua Nullius, Environmental Nullius and Economic Nullius is written into Australian laws. It further outlines how the anthropocentric value of nature as a resource and the accompanying humanistic technology provide what modern humans believe is the tool for managing ecosystems. In response, today there is a coming together of the First Nations people and the new Australians in a shared histories perspective, to highlight and ensure the protection of natural values to land and waterways which this thesis also explores.
