CHILD IMMIGRANTS TO THE “EDGE OF EMPIRE”: FAIRBRIDGE CHILD MIGRANTS AND BRITISH COLUMBIA’S QUEST FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE “WHITE MAN’S PROVINCE” by Daniel Vallance B.A., Lancaster University, 2010 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2013 © Daniel Vallance, 2013 Abstract Beginning in the 1860s British children participated in migration schemes to Canada. Philanthropists, motivated by evangelical beliefs and despair at the state of childhood for homeless and dependent children in Britain, would send 80,000 British boys and girls to Canada between 1867 and 1929. Placed with Canadian families in rural communities, the schemes directed these children toward lives as farm labourers and housewives. By the 1920s, rampant opposition to these child migration schemes in central and eastern Canada brought about their termination. Opponents of child migration, mobilized the language of eugenics to condemn the children sent to Canada as “degenerate castoffs” of British society, and argued that the children were beyond saving and posed a threat to Canadian society. This was not the end of child migration to Canada, however, for in 1935 the Fairbridge Society, a rescue organization, opened the Prince of Wales Fairbridge Farm School in British Columbia. This final scheme would see 329 children sent to British Columbia before its demise in 1950. The earlier period of child migration to Canada, 1860 to 1929, has received the majority of scholarly attention with the recommencement in 1935 often overlooked. This thesis examines how the Fairbridge Farm School at Cowichan Station was able to open and operate in British Columbia without popular opposition by exploring how British Columbian constructions of whiteness were projected onto and internalized by the operators of the Farm School and its children, and in doing this incorporate the Fairbridge Farm School into the larger narrative of child migration to Canada.

Welcome to issue 66 as we head into our seventh year of SLAP publication. I would usually at this point write with optimism as we look forward to the year ahead, but these are strange times folks and we’re living a very uncertain world. Global political instability and economic uncertainty are likely to make 2017 a tricky year for most of us. That said, let’s at least look ahead at the positives locally... In Feb2017 this issue we bring you news of Hereford’s bid for City of Culture 2021. This initiative whether successful or not can only be a good thing, breathing new life and ideas into the area. Talking of things Hereford, we say a fond farewell, for the time being at least, and a huge thank you to Naomi and Oli at Circuit SLAP MAGAZINE Sweet who have been for many years good friends of SLAP, writing, distributing and generally supporting. Their duties in these Unit 3a, Lowesmoor Wharf, areas will fall to the lovely people at Hereford’s Underground Worcester WR1 2RS Revolution who are themselves doing great work promoting and Telephone: 01905 26660 supporting the local music scene. • The Roots Report: Bringing the Music to You!
The Roots Report: Bringing the Music to You! Okee dokee folks… The other night I went to a house concert in Connecticut where my friend Michelle Malone from Georgia was playing. Michelle has been been performing for about 30 years, toured all over the world, has over 17 CDs in her catalog and collaborated with artists such as Indigo Girls, Jackson Browne, Steve Earle and many others. For more about her, moan over to MichelleMalone.com. If you’ve never been to a house concert, you should give it a try or have your own. It doesn’t require anything fancy or complicated, though I have been to house concerts where they have full sound and lights set up. It can be as simple as having a bunch of friends over and listening to someone play music in the living room. It’s kind of like a Tupperware party with music. At the concert the other night, there was a pot luck dinner, a fire pit outside, lots of friends, adult beverages, four dogs and even a cat! There are plenty of sites to guide you through the house concert prep process; a popular one is concertsinyourhome.com. Most touring performers are open to the idea of house concerts, but there are plenty of locals willing to do so as well. (Me!) Check out RISongwriters.com for other locals who are available. Some hosts pay a flat rate to the performer while others use a donation/ticket structure. This whole scene is sort of underground. The shows are not publicly advertised, but are invitation only.
