ASO Amplified: NYCO @ Iron City 7:30 pm - Concert at Iron City 10 After party at Iron City Carlos Izcaray, Conductor / NYCO The Sound Edge Festival kicks off with ASO Amplified: NYCO @ Iron City. The Alabama Symphony and former Chicago Symphony percussionist, Ted Atkatz, and his new band, NYCO, will perform a cutting edge collaboration at our first ever appearance at Iron City.

Excursions in Recorded Sounds 7 pm - Event at Seasick Records 11 After party at Seasick Records Get ready for a sensory experience that will push the boundaries and explore how recorded sound can become a means rather than an end. Join us for a night at Birmingham’s newest independent record store, Seasick Records, that will be filled with performances that will utilize pre-recorded sound as an instrument.

Artikulation: Graphic Scores of the Avant-Garde 6 pm - Ambient/noise and visual scores at Saturn with Carlos Izcaray, cello 12 After party at Saturn Groundbreaking compositions that eschew traditional notation include composers such as , Charles Mingus, , and György Ligeti and are the inspiration for the title of this evening’s program. This approach to composition broadens the performative possibilities and these scores – works of art all their own – will be on display during each performance.

Life out of Balance: Koyaanisqatsi 6 pm - Discussion with Carlos Izcaray 13 7 pm - Film in the Birmingham Museum of Art auditorium Explore the diverse relationship between music, art and film. “Life out of Balance” at the Birmingham Museum of Art will open with BMA’s new contemporary art exhibition,“Third Space.” Then the ASO’s new music director, Carlos Izcaray will dive deep into the relationship between these three art forms. Another highlight for this extraordinary evening will be the show- ing of the filmKoyaanisqatsi composed by . Contemporary Visions: Inspired by Shakespeare 7:30 pm - Concert at WorkPlay 14 After party at WorkPlay This bold performance will showcase the Bard and themes of love – both beautiful and deadly. Susan Botti’s theatrical Telaio: Desdemona is a haunting look into the tragic bride from Othello. Leonard Bernstein’s finger-snapping music fromWest Side Story is a modern update of Romeo & Juliet.

Future Elevators 8 pm - Concert at Syndicate Lounge 15 After party at Syndicate Lounge Future Elevators is a melody driven project based on positivity and a conversion of energy. Fresh and Classic at the same time, this music is infectious and will stick to your brain. The work horse of this baby, Michael Shackelford, is dedicated to finding golden tones providing a pleasurable listen for the audience by way of crafting brilliant songs comprised of a combination of straight forward lyrics as well as deeply cryptic clues that take one down the rabbit hole filling your mind pallet with ear candy along the way. Give it a listen and let the music take you on a ride!

ASO Presents EchoTempo 7:30 pm - Concert at the Alys Stephens Center 16 After party at Avondale Brewing Co. “ASO Presents EchoTempo” is about the vitality of “Original” instruments – the voice, the drum, a mother’s song and warm embrace. Susan Botti’s EchoTempo is a modern classic for soprano and percussion, setting Native American poems. Anna Clyne’s Within Her Arms is a radiant meditation on love and loss. Then join us for an after party at Avondale Brewery!

Waves of Woodlawn 7:30 pm - Woodlawn Party with open shops 17 Spend the evening wandering the streets and experiencing the sounds, sensory light illusions and intimate concerts throughout the shops, cafés and recording studios of Woodlawn. Between the streets of 55th Place South and 1st Avenues, Communicating Vessels, one of Birmingham’s premier independent record labels, Club Duquette, Cycle Café, Open Shop, and Step Pepper Records open their doors for you to enjoy a music street party that you will never forget.

The Four Seasons Recomposed 7:30 pm - Concert at the Alys Stephens Center 18 After party at WorkPlay The Four Seasons Recomposed is Max Richter’s modern update on the Vivaldi original that has electrified audiences around the world. Hear why this mesmerizing work has built a cult following. Andrew Norman is known as a “noise” composer of intriguing structures and sounds. His Apart includes chance elements that’ll take the musicians to the edge.
