©High Legh Community Association 2012 2 Welcome to the Autumn Edition of the High Legh Newsletter Enjoy The cover picture celebrates the creation of a new walkway through the woodland between Wrenshot Lane and Surridge. Our Village Appearance group have worked hard on designs and funding to create this safe pathway to the school, which is also enjoyed by people who like a stroll on the level path through our beautiful trees. Do take the opportunity to enjoy the autumn colours particularly of the chestnut, acer and trees. We have some very old trees in High Legh – the yew trees in the Chapel grounds are certainly hundreds, maybe over a thousand years old. There is also a very old hollow oak tree on Peacock Lane. It is easy to take these natural assets for granted.

The landscape we can all enjoy only exists because individuals take the trouble to make sure it is preserved and renewed. The same is true for community facilities and the events that happen within them. These facilities only exist because individuals put time and effort into maintaining and developing them. Action You could enjoy the satisfaction of making things happen around High Legh. Contact any of the newsletter contributors and you will be warmly welcomed to help with anything from making cups of tea to managing the finances or running an event or project. Young or old, you can develop new skills and enhance your CV. For people returning to the workplace -refresh your skills with recent experience; for retirees- use the skills you gained at work to help the community. You can make new friends and enjoy the quiet satisfaction of knowing you helped make something good, happen.

This Newsletter is written, published and delivered to High Legh homes, through the voluntary efforts of members of the High Legh Community.

4 High Legh Community Association

AGM

Invitation To You , Please come to High Legh Village Hall on Thursday 13th November at 7.30pm

- Find out what your Community Association has done in the last year - Discuss plans and priorities for the year ahead - Elect Officers and CA Council Members - Enjoy some light refreshments and a glass of wine. - Help “put the world to rights” - or at least High Legh, where we can really make a difference

From Nick Gerrard, Chair High Legh Community Association DO YOU LOVE HIGH LEGH? IF SO WE NEED YOUR HELP! Did you know that everyone who lives in High Legh is automatically a FREE member of High Legh Community Association (HLCA), a registered charity dedicated to providing social, leisure and educational opportunities for the residents of High Legh.

On Thursday November 13th at 7.30pm we have our AGM in the Village Hall and we would love it if you were able to come. We will lay on FREE refreshments and tell you about what has been happening this last year with the Village Hall, the Robert Moffat High Legh 10k, Sunday Teas, The Village Show, and many other events, and what the plans are for next year. We will also be on hand to answer any questions that you may have, and in particular, we would like to know what more we (with you) can do to help make things even better in our beautiful Village. So, please come!

And if, for some reason you don't love High Legh, we would still like you to come if you have ideas as to what we can improve.

We also always need volunteers.

5 This AGM, our longstanding Treasurer, Tim Pearce, who has contributed so much to Village life, has decided to stand down. We would like to place on record our heartfelt thanks for all the seen and unseen work that he has done in the Village Hall and for various events, especially the management of our 10K race, on which he has worked since 2008. Feedback from both UK Athletics and runners on our “silky smooth” race organisation has contributed greatly to the reputation of our race. Tim has also made practical contributions to all our social events, operated “What’s On” and has provided DIY assistance to the Hall, sometimes at short notice, to help us overcome Hall emergencies. He contributed thousands of pounds worth of DIY efforts to improving the Village hall. He will leave some big gaps in the often unseen machinery that keeps the CA operating.

This means that we now need a new Treasurer, so if you are interested and wish to know what is involved, please contact me or any other member of the HLCA Council.

We are also looking for additional volunteers to help organise the highly successful Robert Moffatt High Legh 10k race and other events including Sunday Teas, and helping with the running of the Village Hall including specifically expertise in marketing, project management, DIY or IT skills. If any of these areas interests you, then please let us know.

Many thanks - see you on Thursday November 13th! Nick Gerrard (Chair, High Legh Community Association ([email protected] Tel 752795)

Social News SUNDAY TEAS High Legh Sunday Teas have had an excellent year in 2014. More people are discovering the superb home baking for which High Legh Sunday Teas are renowned. The last chance to enjoy Sunday Teas will be on Sunday 19th October when there will also be an opportunity to see an exhibition of all the entries in the Photographic Competition.

We hope to start again on Easter Sunday, April 5th 2015, provided that we have the volunteers to keep it all working smoothly. Each Sunday Teas is run by a different local group or organisation. High Legh Community Association volunteers work behind the scenes, making sure that freshly laundered aprons and tea towels are available; replenishing stocks of drinks and consumables; briefing host organisations; checking equipment and hygiene control. Our aim is to ensure that all a “host” organisation needs to do is bake, prepare sandwiches and turn up in sufficient numbers on their afternoon to provide a great service to our customers and

6 tidy up afterwards. To date, the host organisations have raised £11,471 for their own funds and the CA has raised a net £2,563. All of the CA Teas income will be dedicated to improving the Village hall. Thank you to Chris Marsland and Trish Adams for leading this tremendous effort.

200 Club Thank you to all the 200 club agents for collecting in the subscriptions for the new 200 club year. Thank you to the subscribers who help to make the 200 Club a success, raising money for the High Community Association.

The first draw took place at the Village Show and the winners were:-

£75 Eileen Stokes (95) £50 Louise Allan (38) £25 C . R. Fowler (150) £25 Ann Hodges (167) £25 C. Jesudason (111)

Village Show Thank you to Gail Coenen for organising another very successful Village Show this year which gave the residents of High Legh the opportunity to prove how talented they are. There was a new booking in system this year which definitely worked and kept the queues down. We had a wonderful array of exhibits with lots of fruit, vegetables, flowers and cookery with the men’s Victoria sponge category proving to be very popular with 15 entries. Art and craft were also well represented and the younger members of High Legh showed that they can grow, bake, sew and paint as enthusiastically as the adults.

The Saturday afternoon viewing was well attended, with visitors who came to look at the produce, try their luck on the tombola, make a bid on the Silent Auction, enjoy the refreshments and watch the prize giving. New this year was a BBQ which proved to be very popular, no doubt helped by the good weather. Thank you to Pat and John Hurst for doing the BBQ. The show would not be possible without all the volunteers who help to set up, help on the day and clear up afterwards so a big thank you to them. Thank you to all the judges and to Lord Grey for presenting the prizes.

Thank you to all our sponsors and donators of some wonderful prizes in the Silent Auction :- Abbey Leys Farm Shop, Booths Supermarket, Costcutter, Cotton’s Hotel and Spa, High Legh Park Golf Club, Jolly Thresher, Kilton Inn, McDonalds (Jnc 20), Mere Hotel and Spa, RMS Road Maintenance Services, Strikes High Legh Garden Centre, Thomson and Morgan and Individual donors.

8 9 Thank You, Costcutter For several years, Costcutter at Broomedge’s main supplier has supplied products bearing the “Making a Difference Locally” logo. However, Costcutter has switched to a different supplier, and you will have seen a number of extra promotions. Just over £70 remained in the MADL fund, when the switch happened, and the owners, father and son Jesse and Jesse Oldfield have most generously donated that amount to the High Legh Community Association, for which we are most grateful. This is in addition to their previous donations which have assisted us to print the Newsletter and to run the Robert Moffat Memorial 10k race, not forgetting their contributions to events such as the Annual Village Show. Once again, we thank you for all your support. Tim Pearce Treasurer

Village Hall Management Committee Hall Management Helen Wright is already making an impact as Hall Manager with lots more bookings for parties and 2 new weekly events for children. So, book early for your Christmas parties and if you know of any groups looking to find a new meeting place or run an event, ask them to contact Helen. Our charges remain very affordable, despite all the money that has been spent on improvements.

Helen may be contacted on 07703 194052 and [email protected], so please get in touch with her if you are considering using the Village Hall, or you have any questions about it.

New Developments The project to to completely refurbish the ladies toilets is in its final stages. We were very keen to do this over August, as that is when many Hall Users are away on holidays, so fewest people would be affected. There have been several materials supply problems, but the refurbished toilets reopened well in time for the Village Show on September 8th. Hopefully, we will install the basins and vanity units in time for the Photography and Quiz evening. We are very grateful to Mike Walker for the way in which he consulted widely on requirements and then focussed efforts on delivering what the ladies really want. Our thanks go to High Legh Parish Council, and Community Association Council for all of their help in expediting and funding this project.

We are now looking at Hall Improvement plans for the next few years – so do come along to the CA AGM on 13th November when you can have your say. The Village Hall is there to serve the whole High Legh community – what does the community really want, and how could we develop the facility to match changing needs? Can you join us on the VHMC and make change happen?

Little Acorns Babes and Toddler Group High Legh Village Hall 10-12 noon each Wednesday

We had a very enjoyable taster session with Jane Leavy of Rhythm Time , as planned during our session on 30th July, and the good news is that Jane has now started regular sessions at High Legh Village Hall . Billed as ‘the magic of music for babies to pre- schoolers’, these sessions are currently being held from 10-10.30am on Tuesday mornings at the Hall. (If you are interested in joining in or finding out more about Rhythm Time, then please contact Jane directly on 01270-529224, or at [email protected] .) As anticipated, we were quite quiet at Little Acorns over the summers weeks, and in fact, although we had hoped to continue throughout the school holidays, we did end up cancelling a couple of sessions due to the building works taking place to replace and refurbish the Ladies toilets. Apologies for the inconvenience this might have caused to some, but I think all the ladies will agree that the new facilities (albeit not ‘quite’ finished) are a vast improvement on what was available before, so worth a couple of weeks off, I think. Since returning in September, numbers have been increasing again and as usual at this time of year, we are delighted to welcome some new members to the group. Little Acorns meets at the Village Hall every Wednesday, throughout the year, providing a great opportunity for anyone with children 0-3+ years old to get together and meet new friends over a cup of tea or coffee. With lots of toys and activities to keep the youngsters amused as they learn important social skills in a warm and friendly environment, the whole family can relax and enjoy themselves. Open to anyone with a little one to amuse for a couple of hours on a Wednesday morning - EVERYONE WELCOME - ring for more information or just turn up and join in the fun. If you or anyone you know are interested in finding out more about Little Acorns, please contact one of the organisers listed below. Admission costs just £2.00 for adult and first child, plus 50p for each additional child (or adult), and includes refreshments for both adults and children.

Jane Jesudason - 01925-754186 Yvonne Edwardson - 01565-830528

Little Acorns is a ’not for profit’ group organised and run entirely by volunteers for parents and carers of children 0-3 years old. Concessions are available for families who would like to attend, but who might struggle with the session fees. Please speak to Jane, in confidence, for more information.

12 High Legh Preschool In July we said bye bye to 22 children who were ready for school, we had a little celebration party where we got to look at some very unusual animals. The children were so brave and many of them didn’t think twice about holding creatures such as chameleons, bearded dragons and tarantulas!

Most of the children we had known since babies as they first visited nursery with their older siblings. We had become very fond of them and it was lovely to see them so grown up this September as they lined up ready for school. Good Luck we hope you all enjoy Reception class!

We also said bye to Mrs Harris at the end of term as her charge was one of the children going to school. We will miss Becky talking the hind leg off us and her infectious personality. xx

Welcome to all the new children who have joined us, we hope by now you have settled into nursery and are enjoying your time with us. This year we continue to have Little Superstars sessions, French lessons and Joanne visiting us to teach dance. Due to the fundraising efforts of last year these activities continue to be subsidised from Pre-school funds.

We are busier than usual for this time of year so please get in touch if you are considering a place for your child at High Legh Pre-school in the near future. Children generally start at around 2 ½ years old and funding is now available for some eligible 2 year olds as well as funding for children the term after they are 3 years old. 13 Family Fun Day On what turned out to be another beautiful sunny day on 6th August, the second Family Fun Day took place on the Belfry Field.

It was a super community event with some 200 people enjoying the relaxed , fun and friendly atmosphere throughout the afternoon. Organised by Urban Saints and YFC, together with St John's Church and with help from many local volunteers the transformation of the field took place in the morning ready for the 12 noon start.

Many could not believe that it was all free - with bouncy castles, face-painting, the dreaded gyro-chair, football cage, live music from High Legh flutes and the talented musicians from Urban Saints, the prayer tent and, most popular of all, the continual supply of free drinks and cakes, and the free BBQ, expertly managed by David Oldham.

The afternoon concluded with a short open-air service led by the Revd Jen Croft, after which people just didn't seem to want to leave!

There were so many people to thank. Especially the fantastic team of volunteers from Urban Saints, Warrington YFC and High Legh for a truly memorable day, and in particular, we want to thank St John's Church whose sponsorship made it all possible.

CAN YOU MAKE A CUP OF TEA? THEN YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP US BY JOINING THE ‘KITCHEN TEAM’ It’s very rewarding to be part of the development of the little ones, watching them grow in confidence as well as physically, and witnessing friendships blossoming between both children and adults - friendships that could last for many years to come. If you or someone you know is able to help out occasionally for an hour or two on a Wednesday morning, making tea/coffee or helping with the washing up , we’d be really pleased to hear from you. Once a month or once a year, all help gratefully received Many thanks – Jane Jesudason (01925-754186) on behalf of Little Acorns Babes & Toddler Group

14 We are off to a flying start this academic year. Due to the increase of pupil numbers our school has developed an extra class. Our Governing Body made the important decision to maintain the feel of a village school by keeping the class numbers down in size. We now have six classes in school instead of five and all these classes are below 26 pupils. Four new members of staff have joined our amazing school team and we are all working hard on making a difference to every child’s education every day.

The government have made many changes to the curriculum and to assessment this year. However, we are still able to ensure that our school continues to have ‘happiness’ and ‘fun’ at its core; as we know that if children are happy then their brains are open to learning. Our wonderful staff are planning and teaching a very exciting curriculum; already we have had Class1 visit Manchester Airport and go on Concorde as part of their topic ‘Transport’. Class 2 have been on a fantastic trip to Legoland to enhance their topic of ‘Superheroes’.

Being part of the community is at the heart of our school and we are looking forward to our harvest service at St. John’s Church later this month. The Parish Council have had installed a wonderful Woodland Walk way through the woods opposite our school, it is heart-warming to see the children walking through such a beautiful green environment on their way to school every day. We are privileged to have been asked to have a class to tend to this woodland; plant bulbs and litter pick; ensuring that children learn to look after their environment and have pride in the place they live and work in.

In September Class 5 held a community coffee and cake morning for Macmillan Cancer Support; they leafleted the local community to attend as well as our families. We were overwhelmed by firstly the donations of homemade cakes as well as the monetary donations (including a local resident who sent a card and donation through the post as they were unable to attend) Thank you; both staff and children were moved by this gesture. I am proud to announce we made a staggering £548.00 for the charity.

As ever our hardworking PTA have arranged a large number of fundraising events. Our PTA provide our school with a source of money that gives children educational opportunities that we as a school could not afford to provide; brass instruments and weekly tutors for our eldest children, books for our library, computer equipment,

15 enhancing our play environment as well as providing social occasions for our children and our parents. Please feel free to join us on these events.

Our calendar can be found on our new website. www.highlegh.cheshire.sch.uk/ If you would like any information regarding our school, or would like to volunteer to listen to our children read, please get in touch. We would love to meet you. Best wishes Louise Tottle Headteacher PTA Following on from last year's massive success, High Legh School PTA are hosting a Ladies Pamper and Shopping evening on Friday 21 November , 7pm until late. Observatory Since the grand opening of the observatory in June, we have built a special pier for the big 12” Meade telescope. This provides it with a rock solid support. “First light” for the telescope showed that it certainly has a “wow” factor, giving stunning views not only of the Moon, but of much fainter objects such as star clusters and nebulae. It is a fully “Go To” instrument and, once set up, will automatically locate and track objects. The telescope in the dome now has a new hand controller, replacing the old one which was unreliable.

In August we had observing sessions on site. These included watching for meteors on 12th at the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Despite rather overcast skies we did see a number of shooting stars. At an informal meeting at the Jolly Thesher various future projects for the observatory were discussed – a photographic map of the Moon and the study of Transient Lunar Phenomena or TLPs, observation of the planets and astro-photography.

The skies were clearer on 22nd August which meant we had a good observing session with about a dozen people present and two telescopes in use.

2nd Thursday Talks In July Mike Jones gave a talk on Astronomy in India. After the August break were were treated to an excellent talk by Malc. Beasley from Macc. Astro on the Autumn Night Sky and what to look out for. Malc. was, as always, an informative and enthusiastic speaker, inspiring us all to go out, look and wonder at what is up there. Mark reported progress on the observatory and described the three topics mentioned above.

We have two excellent speakers lined up for October and November. On 9th October Professor Phillipa Browning, from Jodrell Bank will talk about “ Our Active Sun ” giving details of our nearest star, its history and how space research is increasing our understanding of its activity . On 13th November Professor Mike Bode from Liverpool University will give a talk entitled “ Stars that go bang in the night ” – about stellar fireworks (supernovas) rather than terrestrial ones!

20 There will be more stargazing sessions on site, always dependant on viewing conditions. But do also come along to our meetings at 7:30 on the second Thursday of each month in the Church Room at St. John’s. All are welcome. Join our mailing list via the website, www.highlegh-communityobservatory.com, or via our Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/highleghlco/. Come to the talks, or join us to observe; either or both, there is something for everyone, whatever age, experience or interest in this community facility.

Mere Post Office It is with much regret and sadness that after serving the community for 23 years Mere Post Office and Village Shop will be closing. Unfortunately we cannot survive in the current economic climate. The Post Office will close on the 29th October 2014 and the shop will close on the 12th November 2014. The Post Office are doing their best to relocate this office as an''Outreach Office'' to enable postal services to continue on a part time basis. This still has to be confirmed. We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of our loyal customers and many friends that have supported us over the past 23 years and for keeping us here for so long! We are going to take a well earned rest and holiday before deciding how to spend our ''twilight'' years. Once again many many thanks for your support and all the best for the future. Kind regards from Mike, Karen and Lorna

We have done so much together in just under 4 years, and as a community of people you will continue to be a blessing to Cheshire, and I hope and pray that you will continue to support St John’s church in all its new ventures in the near future. Please do come and join me at my final service. I send my love and prayers to you all”.

Our session closed with a tasty pasta meal followed by fruit and rainbow cakes.

The sessions are open to all ages, so do come and join us at our next session on Wednesday October 22nd in the church room. We will begin the session around 4pm but the doors will be open from 3.30 pm. Subsequent sessions will be on Wednesday November 26th and Wednesday December 17th. 23 High Legh Parish Council

In July we welcomed Matt Cooper onto the Parish Council. New Woodland Walk The Parish Council are delighted with the new Woodland Walk near Wrenshot Lane. Grants were received from Council, Manchester Airport Trust Fund and the PC. Thank you to all the members of the Village Appearance Group for their hard work on improving areas of the village. A556 Update The application for the A556 Knutsford to Bowdon Scheme has been granted development consent by the Secretary of State. For further information please see: http://infrastructure.planningportal.gov.uk/projects/north-west/a556-knutsford-to- bowdon-scheme Annual Garden Waste Collection Shutdown Following Cheshire East Council’s consultation on the proposed winter shut down for 2014/15, it has been decided that the shutdown will run for 12 weeks this year from 5 December until 16 February. A sticker will be put on bins to inform residents. Planning Applications 14/1158M Stretton Airfield proposal has not yet been decided. 14/0883M Land on West Lane/Beechtree Farm Close – To erect 10 two-storey dwellings. This has been approved subject to conditions. Warrington B C have approved the proposed new Cheshire Fire & Rescue Centre on the site of the old Truck Stop. Overhanging hedges Please consider pedestrians walking on pavements and keep your hedges cut back. Could the residents who border the A50 and West Lane pavements please keep an eye on their hedges/ivy overhanging pavements as these areas are particularly dangerous if you have to walk in the road. Thank you. Dog Owners There are dog owners who constantly appear not to pick up the mess their dog produces. There appears to be an increasing number of instances around High Legh where bagged mess is left on pathways and on the grass. It could take many years for the plastic bag to degrade and expose the mess. Dog waste can be put into the waste bins by the noticeboards on the Belfry and opposite the school, near the entrance to the Play Area on Pheasant Walk, as well as in the special bin near the Play Area. Please clean up after your dog and put the bag in the bin or bring it home with you. Thank you

24 Transport Cheshire East have advised us that older and disabled people within High Legh may wish to consider using the Flexible Transport service. Flexible Transport provides a means for residents to access their nearest town centres for essential services, such as shopping and banking. Although journeys must be pre-booked, the service may go some way to supporting the needs of residents who would otherwise be unable to travel to their nearest town. As this is a CE service it only operates within CE so journeys could not be made to or Warrington for example. Further details about the service and how to register can be obtained from D&G Little Bus on 0845 077 9110.

Policing You can contact our PCSO Lindsey Whitehead 101 or [email protected]. PCSO Whitehead holds surgeries at High Legh Garden Centre if you would like to talk to her. Dates are put on the notice boards and on the website calendar. Please report anything suspicious to the CAT team on 101, or dial 999 in an emergency.

Cyclists Our PCSO Lindsey Whitehead and a Crime Prevention Officer will be at High Legh Garden Centre on Saturday, 1 November from 2.00 - 4.00 p.m near the railway. Come and have your bike marked for free. They will record your details and if a bike is recovered from a burglary or other situation any stolen bikes the police have stamped will be traced through their database.

Subscribe to our email updates by emailing the clerk. Next Meeting: Mon 20 October - check the web calendar for updates. Meetings start at 7.30 p.m. in the Upstairs Meeting Room. All welcome. Cllr Richard Wright (Chairman) Tel: 01925 753256 Mrs Doreen Walker (Clerk) Tel: 01925 754818 [email protected] www.highleghparishcouncil.gov.uk BUS REPORT As all the regular bus users know, regretably High Legh has “lost” the No.37 Warrington – Altrincham bus service. This bus had served High Legh for the last 8 years and it's demise is due partly to the lack of passengers, from this area. As I have said many times before, ”use it” or lose it and unfortunately, we have lost it.

However, we now have our own High Legh – Warrington service, (47) operated by Network Warrington. Unfortunately, at the moment, this bus only runs twice weekly Tuesdays & Fridays. Nevertheless, (possibly based on demand) this will be extended to a fuller service. So you know what to do!!

25 There is still a bus (no.35) from Warrington to Altrincham running past the Jolly Thresher pub. The no.289, - Altrincham via Knutsford bus is still running through High Legh. Finally, timetables of 47 & 289 are posted on village noticeboards and at the “bus stops”, at High Legh School and at the end of Robert Moffat. (path leading to the Belfry) Peter Marsland(755921) Bus Coordinator VILLAGE APPEARANCE It has been most rewarding to hear all the positive comments about our latest achievement – the Woodland Pathway on Wrenshot Lane. Work started here at the beginning of August, and was completed before school started in September. Already it looks like a well established path, with children using it as a route to and from school and walkers taking advantage of a ‘mud free’ zone. Apart from the new grass edging the path, wildflower seeds, to cater for both woodland and wetter areas, will be sown in October, together with five field maple trees. The Cheshire railings have also been extended with a safety barrier at the Pheasant Walk end. Our grateful thanks must go to the following organisations for their financial support, as without this, the project would still only be a proposal from the Parish Plan. They are:- CEC Public Rights of Way Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund High Legh Parish Council Our Sunday Tea customers We are also indebted to the following people who have willingly given of their time and expertise to bring this project to fruition:- Marianne Dobson and Richard Cornwall Legh who drew up the original plans; Marianne who has masterminded the project and been responsible for contacting and liaising with all the relevant agencies; John Cope, our group secretary and key organiser. Perhaps our most trying project has been the Memorial Garden around the commemorative trees on the Belfry. As a result of the lovely, dry summer, our original crop of wild flowers failed to germinate and will therefore be re-sown early in October. Since the beginning of the year, we have also been busy in other areas of the village. Although we are a small group, our activities are wide ranging to include litter picking, sign cleaning, mowing and pruning. I would like to publically thank Celia Critchley, Frank Henderson, Ann Woolf, Chris Marsland, Colin Wilkinson, Julie Morton, Chris Burrows, Rod Bradley and the members named above, for their unfailing support and enthusiasm in tackling the various projects of the Village Appearance Group. 26 1 2 Some history 0f John Moffat , Son of Robert Moffat

John Smith Moffat was born at Kuruman, South Africa in 1835. His sister, Mary, married David Livingstone the Africa explorer. John was educated in England and joined the London Missionary Society in 1858. His father, Robert, settled him at Inyati in 1859, where he lived for 6 years. He resigned the Society some years later and joined the Imperial Government Service. He was stationed at Zeerust during the British occupation of the Transvaal, and in Basutoland.

John Moffat John Smith Moffat gained some fame and possibly notoriety in Africa as one of Cecil Rhodes' emissaries to Lobengula, ruler of the Matabele peoples 1868 - 1894. Rhodes believed that even greater gold fields than those in Johannesburg lay to the north, and after many missions to Bulawayo ('place of the skulls' and Matabele capital), he recruited John Moffat - whose father Robert had been a friend of both Mzilikazi (father) and Lobengula (son) - to negotiate with the son who was then king. Lobengula

Moffat convinced Lobengula that Rhodes would protect him from other colonisers. But it was one Charles Rudd, who had worked with Rhodes when they were both young and poor, who eventually talked the king into signing a deal that allowed mining and settlement in Mashonaland which was, by now, under control of the Matabele. In terms of the Moffat Treaty, as it was called, the Matebele agreed not to enter into correspondence or treaty with any foreign power without the sanction of the British High Commissioner for South Africa. Some say John Moffat abused Lobengula’s trust and confidence by conniving with concession seekers like Rhodes and Rudd but it is not clear if he was a double-dealer or not.

Moffat was at Bulawayo between 1887 and 1892, and acted as representative of the Chartered Company. He was decorated with the C.M.G. for services to Matabeleland in 1890. In 1895 British Bechuanaland was transferred to the Cape Government, and Moffat retired. In 1914 he preached at the commemoration service of his father's landing in Africa 100 years before. He died in 1918 at his home at Mowbray, Cape Province aged 83. Information supplied by Terry Critchley resident of Robert Moffat

Womens Institute Dickens’ Legacy Michael Murphy was the guest speaker at the July meeting. The subject was crime and punishment in Dickensian London. He merged fact with fiction in this interesting and informative talk. Crime was rife due to poverty and ill health. Young boys were trained as pick pockets as illustrated by Dickens in Oliver Twist. Punishment was harsh and offenders faced being shipped to Australia or sent to the gallows. Dickens, a great social historian left a lasting legacy of this period in his novels.

An Evening Treasure Hunt A treasure hunt around Lymm had been organised for the August break. Following close on the heels of Hurricane Bertha, it was fingers crossed for a fine evening which it was. After the excitement of the hunt, the evening ended with a meal at the Spread Eagle. A summer evening that was enjoyed by all.

Back to our Roots The August visit to Anglesey was a great success. Members visited Llanfair PG where the 1st WI in Britain was founded in 1915. After an interesting talk and Welsh hospitality, the group moved on to Plas Newydd House and Gardens (“an enchanting mansion nestling on the edge of the Menai Strait”). Plas Newydd is famous for its connection with the artist Rex Whistler and it houses his fantasy landscape mural.

28 Rambling in Styal Also in August, the ramblers visited the Anderton boat lift and walked to Marbury Park. The next ramble will start at and continue by the to Styal.

Busy September In September there was a trip to the Lowry to see the Birmingham Royal Ballet perform Beauty and the Beast. There was also a trip to Belgium by the North Sea ferry. It was a most enjoyable trip that included a visit to Bruges, Ghent and Arnhem. The weather was set fair and the hotel was excellent. The darts players resumed their Monday get togethers after the summer break and the book club readers continue to meet in the Church Hall. Well done the bowls team. They were awarded the shield for being runners up in the Cheshire Federation competition.

Carry on Cruising At our Evening the guest speaker was Kathy Lewis. An accomplished soprano with an extensive repertoire, Kathy had been entertaining passengers on P&O liners for several years and had taken the decision to retire, but she was tempted out of retirement by Viking Cruise Ships. So off she went touring the world and meeting a variety of interesting people along the way. When Toyoto held a conference on board, Kathy decided to learn a few useful Japanese phrases and a helpful stranger gave her some coaching. After several days of tuition she asked the identity of the mystery tutor and was astonished when he replied “Mr Toyoto”. It was an entertaining evening which we all enjoyed. Unfortunately, Kathy wasn’t too happy with our chosen key to sing Jerusalem. Alas, there are few sopranos amongst us.

Future Meetings In October, the autumn meeting for the Cheshire Federation will be held in . The guest speaker is Prue Leith, Restaurateur, TV Broadcaster and Writer. The following monthly meetings have been arranged:- October 14th “Not through the front door (you don’t)” - Brian Hallworth November 11th AGM December 9th Christmas Party

If you would like to attend the monthly meetings and join in the varied activities do come along and join us. The meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in High Legh Village Hall at 7.30 pm. Visitors and newcomers are always welcome. Val Challis (tel. 754271)

Bowling Club The end of September marks the end of another season of outdoor bowling and the time that we return to the origins of the Club, indoor bowling in the Village Hall. We have, as usual, had mixed weather during the season but with more fixtures being postponed than last year due to waterlogged greens. These postponements mainly affected the Friday evening teams, but not all were caused by problems on our home green. One match, to be played at Chelford was called off at the last minute as a large part of the green was under water.

Here are some of the highlights and achievements of the 2014 outdoor season:

2014 has, for most teams, been more successful than 2013. This season six of our nine teams finished in the top half of their division. Four of these teams finished in the top three. High Legh’s League A team competed in Division 3 of this league, having been promoted from Division 4 last season. They finished in second place and so will be promoted for the second year in a row, this time to the heady heights of Division 2. Well done to Bob Brown and his squad of players and supporters.

30 The Club finished the season with 11 players with an average points score placing them in the top 15 of the players in their particular league. A creditable result for a Club with only 9 teams and a very special mention here goes to Dirk Broad who finished the season at the top of the averages for his division. He was joined in the top fifteen by Norman Harrison, Maurice Wilson and Dennis Allcock the team captain. Anyone interested in viewing the final results and statistics for all our league teams and individual players can do so through the High Legh Bowling Club website using the “Teams” page. Club Competitions The full programme of club competitions was completed by mid-September. A vote of thanks goes to all those who entered the competitions or who helped in many ways to ensure the smooth running of each event. The strength and vitality of a club can be measured by the level of entries and enthusiasm for these competitions. A new competition, the mixed singles handicap, was introduced into the schedule this season. The results are shown below: Competition Winners Runners-up Ladies’ Singles Sue Jennings Maureen Whittle Mens’ Singles Derek Jones Allan Rawnsley Ladies’ Doubles Myra Cadman & Dorothy Wilton Hilda Pimlott & Jean Priestner Mens’ Doubles Bob Davis & Brian Galloway David Bailey & Peter Taylor Mixed Doubles Joan Kitchen & Allan Rawnsley Beryl Brown & Peter Taylor Handicap Allan Rawnsley Norman Harrison Non-finalist David Maynard Maurice Wilson Congratulations to you all and better luck to the rest of us next year. I wouldn’t, however, rely too much on luck, it does tend to level out over a few games.

Silver Jubilee Celebration A day of celebration was held in August to mark the 25th anniversary of the opening of the bowling green. The weather was kind to us and over 120 members, family and

31 special guests tackled bowling based games on the green with a barbecue meal included.

We were very pleased to welcome a number of special guests representing bodies that have supported the bowling club over the years. Lord and Lady Grey (Lord Grey’s father bowled the first bowl at the opening of the green) and the Mayor of (Macclesfield Council supported the club with an interest free loan to finance the building of the green) were joined by representatives of High Legh Community Association, the Parish Council and a number of individuals who have been instrumental in the development of the green. A splash of colour was provided by Lymm Town Crier, Peter Powell, who is a member of the club and ensured that everyone was aware of what was going on. No public address system needed! Feedback from guests suggests that everyone had an enjoyable afternoon with a large number going around the games a number of times. Indoor Bowling The bowling green is due to close on the 5th October for essential maintenance and treatment. Some members then continue to enjoy social indoor bowling at the Village Hall. Our session times at the Village Hall are Wednesday afternoons and on Tuesday evenings. We would welcome any new members interested in joining for the new season.

The Club will continue to field teams in leagues for both short mat and long mat bowling. Our team competing in the Cheshire Villages League had a very successful winter season as reported earlier in the year. The Warrington Indoor long mat league is expanding this year and with guests from Lymm joining us we are fielding two teams in this league. Presentation Evening

The bowling club will be holding our annual dinner and presentation evening at Lymm Golf Club in November. This is always a well attended function and allows the members to celebrate the success and achievement of our teams and individual members. If you are interested in any aspect of the Bowling Club’s activities then please contact me on 01925 759189 or email [email protected] . Best wishes, John Smith (Secretary, High Legh Bowling Club)

Thursday afternoon Tai Chi helps us reduce stress, improve our flexibility and strengthen our muscles. It is gentle exercise, great for people recovering from illness. So do come and join us on Thursdays 3.45 to 4.45pm. Classes are suitable for men and women of all ages and no special clothing is required.
