Alvaston Hall & Cheshire || Discover our hotel and the outdoors THE BEST OF OUR GROUNDS AND GARDENS A cursory look at our grounds will reveal pristine flowerbeds, easy walking routes and a gently trickling stream. But look a little closer and you’ll find some hidden treasures – we asked our team to pick three of the best for you: Golf course Having opened for the first time in 1989, Alvaston Hall Golf Club has matured well over the years with plenty of challenges at every nook and cranny to provide any golfer with a sound and thorough test of their game. War memorial Dedicated to six brave bomb disposal engineers who sadly lost their lives in 1940. An enemy bomber jettisoned his load over Nantwich, and after successfully defusing two of the bombs with just pliers and screwdrivers the third exploded prematurely. Lest we forget. Secret garden and wildlife meadow Our gardens are home to many a hidden treasure but if we had to pick one, we’d pick our secret garden. It’s so peaceful you’d never believe a bustling hotel was just metres away, perfect for a quiet day spent watching the world go by. Nantwich Nantwich is famous for its high concentration of Tudor and Georgian architecture (as well as hosting the annual International Cheese Awards), and also boasts a plethora of jewellery boutiques, antique dealerships and craft stores. Venture within and you’ll find cobbled streets, a Roman Amphitheatre, 1000-year-old cathedral, and of course the world-famous Chester Rows for shopping, dining and drinking. Queens Park A National Heritage site, Queens Park is a Warner Recommends wide-open green space with an ornamental lake in the centre. With a man-made waterfall, gentle fountains, stone statues and a Victorian clock tower, this easy-to-get-to parkland is perfect for a quiet summer’s day. CW2 7JS Free parking 10-minute drive available Trentham Gardens Stretching across 725 acres (as big as Monaco), Trentham Gardens features a floral labyrinth, award-winning Italian gardens, natural grasslands, Trentham lake (one mile long and designed by Capability Brown) and the ruins of the old Trentham Hall. ST4 8JG 8am – 4pm Free parking 30-minute drive Tatton Park Bigger than New York’s Central Park, Tatton Park boasts 50 acres of landscaped gardens, 1,000 acres of flat parkland where red and fallow deer roam, woodland areas and meres, all in the shadow of the Mansion, open to visitors Wed – Sun. Below you’ll find antiques, animals, a boat lift, and some of the tastiest ice cream around. Anderton Boat Lift One of only two working boat lifts in the UK (and a lot closer to Alvaston than Falkirk), the Cathedral of the Canals won ‘experience of the year’ in 2019, with its accompanying visitors centre and coffee shop situated right next to the Anderton Nature Park. CW9 6FW 35-minute drive Dagfields Crafts & Antiques The largest crafts and antiques centre in the North West, Dagfields is home to over 250 dealers and 25 craft workshops. Homemade food is served in the tea rooms and restaurant, so you could spend the whole day here (although even then you might not make it round every shop). CW5 7LG 10am – 5pm Free parking 15-minute drive Cotebrook Shire Horses Between 20 and 30 horses inhabit Cotebrook at any given time, and form the centrepiece of a truly unique day out. Learn all about the history of Shires from Alistair and Janet King, who together have been breeding champion horses for over 50 years. CW6 9DP 10am – 5pm Free parking 22-minute drive Alvaston Hall & Cheshire || Discover our hotel and the outdoors Arley Hall Created over the course of 250 years, the gardens at Arley Hall feature a daffodil and wild flower meadow, walled garden, lime avenue, scented garden, and of course the stately home itself, with a grand staircase, intricate stained glass windows and grand hall. They offer almost 40 flavours, with a dedicated on-site kitchen making fresh ingredients for that unique Snugburys flavour.
