Adam Smith __________________________________________________________________________ It is my great pleasure to introduce this performance report of the Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research (IPA), which summarizes our scientific and academic achievements in 2017. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to all who made a contribution to this year´s excellent performance! I also congratulate each of you to personal achievements that you have accomplished in 2017! Together, we have maintained our high standards and quality in terms of research performance and academic teaching. The regular meetings of the group leaders in the “Institutsrat” help to exchange of important information in a personal manner and informal environment. I thank you all for your contributions and time you dedicate to the “Institutsrat” as in my opinion the personal contact is a relevant key to a cooperative environment. And the latter is very important for the overall success of the IPA! Along these lines, I also wish to express my sincere thanks to Univ. Prof. Hannes Stockinger, the head of the centre for Pathophysiology, Infection, and Immunology (CePII), for his transparent policy and continuous support of the IPA. This support has allowed us the continuation of excellent science and academic teaching in a cooperative atmosphere and is an important basis for our future! Thank you all for your efforts, dedication and willingness to contribute to the strong team spirit and make the IPA what it is! Barbara Bohle Head of the IPA 3 General overview The 18 research groups at the IPA cover various topics, such as basic and translational aspects in cellular and molecular pathophysiology, immunopathology, comparative immunology, oncology, medical biotechnology and allergology. In 2017, these efforts resulted in numerous publications in peer-reviewed high-impact journals, research awards and many contributions to prestigious scientific national and international meetings. A total sum of LOM-relevant 243 impact factors was gained in 2017. Figure 1 gives an overview on the development of the LOM-calculated impact factors of the IPA since 2012. I congratulate each member to this great achievement! The percentage of papers accepted in top, standard and other journals in the respective fields of research is given in Figure 2 and reflects the high quality of the research performed at the IPA as the vast majority of papers are published in top journals. Despite of more difficult conditions for funding, the IPA members continued to be successful in recruiting third party money and research grants as shown in figure 3 which gives an overview on the LOM-relevant impact factors achieved by grants since 2012. However, the declining tendency of third party funding in the past years is clearly visible. Congratulations to all project leaders who successfully run research projects funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the Österreichische Nationalbank, the medizinisch- wissenschaftlicher Fonds des Bürgermeisters der Stadt Wien and the European Commission 4 or funded in cooperations with companies! As in the previous years, the total sum of third party funding makes 95% of the IPA budget and more than 60% of our staff is paid by this money. This positive funding situation also reflects that the members of the IPA are highly active researchers and well embedded in the international fields of their expertise. The IPA is proud of several successful and long lasting collaborations with national and international research partners. In addition to research, the IPA takes teaching and education very seriously. In 2017, a total of 110 Austrian and international bachelor, diploma and PhD students were educated. Figure 4 illustrates the total numbers of diploma (white circles), PhD (black circles) and bachelor students (black triangles) over the past years. Several group leaders are involved in doctoral programs funded by the FWF which also reflects the high quality of training of PhD students at the IPA. The high commitment of the IPA’s members to teaching is also reflected by the total numbers of semester hours of the members of the IPA held at the Medical University (Figure 5). Our achievements in teaching in total equal 161,62 LOM-relevant impact factors. Regular “Impulse Seminars” have been held at the IPA in 2017 during which the different group leaders at the IPA present their latest scientific achievements. These seminars can be regarded as advanced training for IPA members but are also open for external guests. This year, it has also been decided that in the future also PostDocs at the IPA will be invited to present their scientific results in “Impulse Seminars”. Furthermore, several members of the IPA are active in teaching and examining at other universities. Many IPA members also act as reviewers of external diploma and PhD theses, Habilitations, scientific manuscripts and research grants, and are active on editorial and advisory boards and on the boards of national and international research societies. At our website www.meduniwien.ac.at/hp/ipa/ we monthly publish our research papers to make our scientific achievements visible for the public. Moreover, our “news and activities” announce awards and personal achievements of the members of the IPA. Thank you all for your active contribution to the performance of the IPA! 5 6 Performance Report 2017 Organigram Organigram (December 2017) Head: Barbara Bohle, PhD, Professor for Cellular Allergology Deputy Head: Peter Pietschmann, MD, Professor Department Secretary: Marion Sack Check point: Andreas Kunrath Student Secretary: Marion Krones, Zorica Stanojevic Division for Comparative Immunology and Oncology Head: Erika Jensen-Jarolim, MD, Professor for Pathophysiology, Professor for Comparative Medicine Secretary: Nora Diallo Martina Salzmann, BMA 50% WG AllergoOncology: Head: Erika Jensen-Jarolim, MD, Professor Beatrix Pfanzagl, Ass.
