The Maltese Lira
THE MALTESE LIRA On 16 May 1972, the Central Bank of Malta issued the first series of decimal coinage based on the Maltese Lira, at the time being roughly equivalent to the British Pound. Each Lira was divided in 100 cents (abbreviation of centesimo, meaning 1/100), while each cent was subdivided in 10 mills (abbreviation of millesimo, meaning 1/1000). 3 December 2010 PRESS RELEASE CHANGES TO THE LIST OF EURO FOREIGN EXCHANGE REFERENCE RATES: ISRAELI SHEKEL ADDED, ESTONIAN KROON REMOVED On 1 January 2011, Estonia will become the 17th Member State of the European Union to adopt the euro. The European Central Bank (ECB) will thus stop publishing euro reference exchange rates for the Estonian kroon (EEK) from this date. Moreover, the ECB has decided to compute and publish, as of 3 January 2011, the euro reference rates for the Israeli shekel on a daily basis. Malta Adopts the Euro
IP/08/2 Brussels, 1 January 2008 Malta adopts the euro Malta adopted the euro today. All available data indicate that the changeover from the Maltese lira went well and as planned. Citizens are able to withdraw euro cash from ATMs in Malta and to use it for daily payments. "Today is another proud day in Malta's proud history. A day in which it took its place at the heart of the European Union. The euro is a strong and stable currency. Along with the economic reforms the EU and Member States have undertaken, it is a reason why the European economy is still growing despite some difficult challenges caused by high energy and commodity prices. By joining the euro, Malta has said yes to stability, to reform and to hassle-free trade and travel for its businesses and citizens", said Commission President José-Manuel Barroso. "The adoption of the euro is a historic event for Malta less than four years after you became a member of the European Union. This achievement has become possible thanks to Malta's stability-oriented economic policies. Please stay on the right path! I want to congratulate the Maltese authorities and all who have contributed to what are very comprehensive practical preparations", said Joaquín Almunia, European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs. The euro is Malta's currency as of today. The euro has replaced the Maltese lira at a rate of MTL 0.429300 for one euro (or € 2.33 per lira), following a decision taken by the Ecofin Council in July on a Commission proposal. -

EUROPEAN COMMISSION MEMO Brussels, 4 June 2014 The 2014 Convergence Report and Lithuania: frequently asked questions on euro adoption What is the Convergence Report? The Convergence Report forms the basis for the EU Council of Ministers' decision on whether a Member State may join the euro area. The report assesses whether Member States with a derogation1 have achieved a high degree of sustainable economic convergence, in terms of price stability, sound public finances, exchange rate stability and convergence in long-term interest rates. It also assesses the compatibility of their national legislation with Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) rules set out in the Treaty: independence of the national central bank, prohibition of monetary financing, and compatibility with the statutes of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and of the European Central Bank (ECB). Convergence Reports are issued every two years or, as was the case for Latvia in 2013, when there is a specific request from a Member State to assess its readiness to join the euro area.The 2014 Convergence Report covers the eight Member States with a derogation: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden. What are the conclusions of the assessment carried out for Lithuania? The 2014 Convergence Report concludes that Lithuania meets the criteria for adopting the euro. As a consequence, the Commission is proposing that Lithuania adopt the euro on 1 January 2015 and that the Council abrogate the derogation accordingly. This formal decision is expected to be taken by the EU Council of Ministers in the second half of July 2014. -

In the opinion of Estonian politicians, this country has never been so secure and stable in its history. Tallinn sees the introduction of the tudies euro primarily in the political context as an entrenchment of the Estonian s presence in Europe. The process of establishing increasingly close rela- tions with Western European countries, which the country has consisten- astern tly implemented since it restored independence in 1991, has been aimed e at severing itself its Soviet past and at a gradual reduction of the gap existing between Estonia and the best-developed European economies. The Estonian government also prioritises the enhancement of co-operation as part of the EU and NATO as well as its principled fulfilment of the Centre for country’s undertakings. INTRODUCTION Since the adoption of the euro by Estonia on 1 January 2011, the euro area consists of seventeen EU Member States. Among the remaining eleven Member States, nine Member States are expected to adopt the euro once the necessary conditions are fulfilled. Denmark and the United Kingdom have a special "opt-out"-status and are not committed to adopt the euro. This report assesses the state of play of the practical preparations for introducing the euro in Latvia and evaluates the progress made in preparing the changeover related communication campaign. Following the Council decision from 9 July 2013 concluding that the necessary conditions for euro adoption are fulfilled, Latvia will adopt the euro on 1 January 2014 ("€- day"). The conversion rate between the Latvian lats and the euro has been irrevocably fixed at 0.702804 Latvian lats to one euro. 2. STATE OF PLAY OF THE PREPARATIONS FOR THE CHANGEOVER IN LATVIA Latvia will be the sixth of the group of Member States which joined the EU in 2004 to adopt the euro. Latvia's original target date of 1 January 2008 foreseen in the Action Plan for Implementation of the Single European Currency of 1 November 2005 was subsequently reconsidered. -

Starting point of reform and general features of development Estonia 1 has adopted the one of the most radical programs of stabilization and transformation amongst not only the former Soviet Union countries but among previously centrally planned economies as well. The commodity and service markets were balanced mainly through the price liberalization and introduction of the internally convertible national currency. This was supplimented with the austerity in public consumption and surpluss in the state budget. The changes were also associated with a radical shift in the foreign trade rearientation. The economy that previously was oriented to almost costless recources from the former Soviet Union and work mostly for the Soviet "markets" seems to be very well adjusted to western markets and broad participation in the world economy.
