" VIVA EUROPA is a pan-European cultural initiative that consists in the simultaneous projection on big screens - in public spaces in participating cities across Europe - of a live opera performance from Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Spain. This event is for the general public to enjoy free of charge. ! " VIVA EUROPA has been associated with the activities of the European Years, under the patronage of the European Commissioner responsible for each Year. A specific video message from the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso , introduces the broadcast every year. ! " VIVA EUROPA is based on the altruistic collaboration of the artists and people involved in each year’s production and their strong support for this European project. The video and audio satellite signals are transmitted gratuitously from Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, Valencia’s opera house, to every participating city. 4 Introduction VIVA EUROPA Previous Editions ! " VIVA EUROPA 2009 JUNE 24th. VIVA EUROPA was born in 2009 as a cultural initiative, integrated within the European Year of Creativity and Innovation under the patronage of Mr Ján Figel’, European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth. It consisted of the live transmission of Wagner’s opera Die Walküre from Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Spain. The performance was interpreted by Plácido Domingo, among others, conducted by Zubin Mehta and staged by La Fura dels Baus. Over 15,000 citizens in 9 European cities from 5 countries simultaneously shared this cultural initiative. www.create2009.europa.eu ! " VIVA EUROPA 2010 JUNE 18th, was held during the European Year against Poverty and Social Exclusion and received the high patronage of the Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, Mr László Andor. Bizet’s opera Carmen was sung by Elina Garanča and Marcelo Alvarez and was conducted by Zubin Mehta at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, with its simultaneous broadcast in 43 cities from 17 countries across Europe. " TO PROMOTE the European feeling of community through a relevant cultural form rooted in European tradition - opera - shared in real time with citizens across Europe. ! " TO FACILITATE intercultural, intergenerational and intersocietal encounters every year, during a June evening. ! " TO MAKE PEOPLE FEEL AND THINK EUROPE by bringing together a significant number of citizens from different origins to enjoy and share vocal and instrumental music, theatre, visual art, technology and emotions. ! " TO TRANSMIT the European Year objectives. ! " TO SHOW the high quality and innovative force of art, culture and technology in Europe through this VIVA EUROPA transmission. ! " TO GIVE VISIBILITY to every European city taking part in this initiative, through video and audio references transmitted during the performance intervals to all the participating cities. 6 Introduction Viva Europa 2011 ! " VIVA EUROPA 2011 JUNE 13TH, integrated as an activity of the European Year of Volunteering, hosted the live broadcast of Giacomo Puccini’s famous opera TOSCA from Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, under the patronage of Ms Viviane Reding, Vice- President of the European Commission responsible for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship. As in previous editions, this cultural event was free of charge for the audience. A total of 57 cities from 21 different European countries participated in this third edition of VIVA EUROPA, with 100,000 people attending the event. www.europa.eu/volunteering !
