E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The holothuroid species collected by The British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) are listed, with some systematic annotations. A previous report by O’Loughlin on some BANZARE holothuroids is revised and incorporated. Four new species are described: the Antarctic dactylochirotid Echinocucumis kirrilyae sp. nov.; the Kerguelen dendrochirotid Clarkiella deichmannae sp. nov.; the Antarctic dendrochirotids Trachythyone cynthiae sp. nov. and Trachythyone mackenzieae sp. nov. Cucumaria serrata var. intermedia Théel from Heard and Kerguelen, and Cucumaria serrata var. marionensis Théel from Marion, are raised to species status, and assigned to Pseudocnus Panning. Cucumaria (Semperia) ekmani Ludwig & Heding is a junior synonym of Cucumaria kerguelensis Théel. Cucumaria kerguelensis is re-assigned to Neopsolidium Pawson. Thyone recurvata Théel and Cucumaria squamata Ludwig are junior synonyms of Trachythyone muricata Studer. Cucumaria (Semperia) bouvetensis Ludwig & Heding is formally re-assigned to Trachythyone. Trachythyone baja Hernández is a junior synonym of Trachythyone bouvetensis (Ludwig & Heding). Abstract: Sphingolipids are complex lipids widespread in nature as structural components of biomembranes. Commonly, the sphingolipids of marine organisms differ from those of terres- trial animals and plants. The gangliosides are the most complex sphingolipids characteristic of vertebrates that have been found in only the Echinodermata (echinoderms) phylum of invertebrates. Sphingolipids of the representatives of the Asteroidea and Holothuroidea classes are the most studied among all echinoderms. In this review, we have summarized the data on sphingolipids of these two classes of marine invertebrates over the past two decades. Recently established structures, properties, and peculiarities of biogenesis of ceramides, cerebrosides, and gangliosides from starfishes and holothurians are discussed. The purpose of this review is to provide the most complete informa- tion on the chemical structures, structural features, and biological activities of sphingolipids of the Asteroidea and Holothuroidea classes. -

The density and population parameters of the sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotus from Sisal, Yucatan, Mexico were determined during the fishing season. Belt transects of 200 m2 were set in 10 sampling sites at two fishing areas. All organisms within the belt were counted and collected. In the harbor, 7,618 sea cucumbers were measured and weighed: the population parameters were determined using FISAT II. Mean densities of I. badionotus in April 2011, September 2011 and February 2012 were 0.84 ± 0.40, 0.51 ± 0.46, and 0.32 ± 0.17 ind m-2, respectively. Sea cucumber total length varied from 90 to 420 mm, with a uni-modal distribution. The growth parameters were: L∞ = 403 mm, K = 0.25, and to = -0.18, with an allometric growth (W = 2.81L1.781). The total mortality was 0.88, whereas natural mortality was 0.38, fish mortality was 0.50 and the exploitation rate 0.54. Even when sea cucumbers fishery in Sisal is recent and in development with a high density (5570 ind ha-1), it is necessary to establish management strategies to protect the resource, such as an annual catch quota, catching size (>280 mm length), monitoring of population density, and reproduction and larval distribution. -

Miller ABSTRACT Eostichopus new genus is erected for stichopodid holothurians whose ossicles include tables having large disks (>60 J.Lm wide) with more than 12 perforations and having spires with two or more crossbeams and spines at every junction of crossbeam with pillar. In Eostichopus amesoni new species, tables have numerous disk perforations (up to 100) and spire crossbeams (up to 10) and there are unique reticulate rods in the tentacles. C-shaped ossicles are also present. E. amesoni is known at present from Puerto Rico and Grenada at moderate depths. In July 1969 during a cruise of the University of Miami's R/V PILLSBURY,one specimen of a large stichopodid holothurian was taken by trawl off Grenada, W.J. The specimen was examined in April 1979 by one of us (J.E.M.) in the collections of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami (UMML) and, although in poor condition, was recognized as probably belonging to a new species. -

Baseline information on species composition is essential before industrial activities take place in waters adjacent to Kodiak Island. It was the intent of this investigation to collect information on the composition, distribution, and biology of the epifaunal invertebrate components of two bays of Kodiak Island. The specific objectives of this study were: 1) A qualitative inventory of dominant benthic invertebrate epifaunal species within two study sites (Alitak and Ugak bays). -

Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES); Seventeenth Regular Meeting: Taxa Being Considered for Amendments to the CITES Appendices The United States, as a Party to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), may propose amendments to the CITES Appendices for consideration at meetings of the Conference of the Parties. The seventeenth regular meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES (CoP17) is scheduled to be held in South Africa, September 24 to October 5, 2016. With this notice, we describe proposed amendments to the CITES Appendices (species proposals) that the United States might submit for consideration at CoP17 and invite your comments and information on these proposals. Please note that we published an abbreviated version of this notice in the Federal Register on August 26, 2015, in which we simply listed each species proposal that the United States is considering for CoP17, but we did not describe each proposal in detail or explain the rationale for the tentative U.S. position on each species. CITES is an international treaty designed to control and regulate international trade in certain animal and plant species that are affected by trade and are now, or potentially may become, threatened with extinction. These species are listed in the Appendices to CITES, which are available on the CITES Secretariat’s website at http://www.cites.org/sites/default/files/eng/app/2015/E-Appendices-2015-02-05.pdf. Currently, 181 Parties, including the United States, have joined CITES. -

In an initiative to help further our understanding, invertebrate surveys over the past seven years have now revealed more than 500 species, many of which are endemic. This is an essential reference guide to these species. Illustrated with hundreds of representative photographs, it includes brief narratives on the biology and ecology of the major taxonomic groups and characteristic features of common species. It is primarily aimed at scientifi c observers, and is intended to be used as both a training tool prior to deployment at-sea, and for use in making accurate identifi cations of invertebrate by catch when operating in the HIMI region. Many of the featured organisms are also found throughout the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, the guide therefore having national appeal. SPC Beche-de-mer Information Bulletin #39 – March 2019 27 Contribution to the knowledge of holothurian biodiversity at Reunion Island: Two previously unrecorded dendrochirotid sea cucumbers species (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) Philippe Bourjon1* and Jean-Pascal Quod2 Introduction A comprehensive knowledge of biodiversity at the local scale is needed to design management and conser- vation strategies, and to adapt regional management plans to population connectivity as well as to formulate biogeographic hypotheses. This information is all the more important when the biology and distribution of species are poorly known, as is the case with many sea cucumbers. Consequently, reliable field observa- tions accompanied by photographic evidences and information on location and habitat can allow experts to better understand spatial patterns, and infer distributions using ecological niche modelling (Michonneau and Paulay 2015). Moreover, these data, even if not enabling precise identification of previously unrecorded species, allow the inclusion of these species in the research programme of future inventory missions. This article is written with that in mind. The most recent inventory of holothurians at Reunion Island includes 39 species (Conand et al. 2018) belong- ing to four orders (Holothuriida, Synallactida, Apodida, Dendrochirotida) and five families (Holothuriidae, Stichopodidae, Chiridotidae, Synaptidae, Sclerodactylidae). The order Dendrochirotida is represented by two species belonging to the family Sclerodactylidae (Afrocucumis africana,
