You have a successful tourist industry and we are developing one on Pitcairn. We Mulch Delivered have similar dynamics on every level and it’s a good time to establish formal relationships with the Norfolk Island Government.” Retaining Walls This is Jay Warren’s, the Mayor of Pitcairn Island, second visit to Norfolk and he has enjoyed meeting up Paving with the Members of the Norfolk Island government to officially strengthen the relationship. “It’s not like a Earthworks family member coming across to visit another family member” he said, “this is official - government to Section Clearing government - as well as meeting up with family and friends. Garden Edging The British Government is in the process of re- structuring the government of Pitcairn Island which Custom Bbq’s will eventually be a partnership between the Pitcairn Islanders, the Governor’s office in Wellington and the Pitcairn Island Council. What they are aiming to do Patios is not a Constitutional change, but an operational and administration change. The British Government aims Outdoor Living Areas to transfer a lot of the operational responsibility from areas like the Governor’s office or the Pitcairn Island Phone Richard Cottle office in Auckland to the Island Council. “There will be a lot more self determination,” Mr. Jaques said “the Councillors will have individual 50368 or 22724 portfolios and take responsibility for running health, for a free no obligation quote education, welfare and areas like that. The Governor’s office will still have overall responsibility for Pitcairn because at the moment it is a United Kingdom overseas territory. There are 14 other such territories scattered around the world - places like Montserrat, Bermuda, Gibraltar, Falkland Islands and The St. Helena, and all are governed by the Overseas White Paper of 1999. Within that framework there is massive scope for Pitcairn to take greater responsibility for its Block Factory own affairs. Presently power is only available 8.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 10 p.m. The idea is that the island would be on wind power for about 70 per cent of the time and diesel generators would be used as a back up. The wind generators will store power in batteries. The contract has been awarded to Hydro Tasmania and they hope to finalise this by the end of the financial year. As Pitcairn depends entirely on sea transport, the authorities are looking at every conceivable way of upgrading that so there is a more regular and affordable shipping service for the Pitcairners. At the moment there are 6 services per year via Tahiti and Mangareva. As the French authorities insist that all cargo to Tahiti is carried in containers, that which is bound for Pitcairn is carried in 6 foot containers, which is the lifting capacity of the island crane. Cargo is carried from Mangareva on the ship Brave Heart. For those who made the Pilgrimage to Pitcairn in 1984 and travelled on this last leg on the Taporo II, it was interesting to learn that the ship that brings the cargo from Papeete to Mangareva is now Taporo VIII! I wonder what happened to the other six Taporos? Because they want to build the economy in terms of tourism, they are finalising specifications for the building of a break-water with funding coming from the British Government and the European Union. This will give the community a safe harbour and will also allow for the visit of more cruise ships. Pitcairn is a very popular place to visit for passing cruise ships. At the moment 10 to 12 such ships call each year. However, there are 40 cruise ships that ply the Easter Island-Tahiti route and Pitcairn is slap, bang in the middle of a 6-day cruise. So it is ideal for them to come to Pitcairn for a stop-over. The problem has been accessibility and in this increasingly litigious age, the question of who sues who arises if an accident occurs. The principals of the cruise lines have said that they would come if they could lower their own tenders and enter a safe harbour. The ‘bread and butter visitor’ will be mainly cruise ship passengers who not only purchase the local carvings and other curios, but who are also charged a $30.00 per head landing fee. Last year 1,000 visitors landed from 2 cruise ships so you don’t have to be a mathematical genius to work out the financial benefits that would flow to Pitcairn if only 30 of the 40 cruise ships called! The longer term visitors would more likely be people who come on charters out of Mangareva. “We’ve got so much to offer in terms of Henderson and Oeno Islands” Mr. Jaques said. “we’ve also got the history, the heritage, the culture and together with 11 endemic plant species we hope to attract the tourist consultants, the higher value archaeologists, anthropologists, ornithologists and every other type of ‘ologists’. They will stay with the islanders and many have done up their homes to be able to accommodate this type of visitor.” With all these of the exciting plans in the pipeline, we asked Jay if there has been a upsurge in Pitcairners wanting to come home permanently - “Not just yet. (continued overleaf) Big changes ahead for Pitcairn - continued But some of them have got interested in coming back home to see relatives if they can get a regular way to get on and off. Hopefully, some of them might get interested in staying and that’s one of our aims” he replied The actual ownership of land on Pitcairn has, over the years, become a problem. They have now introduced a Land Tenure Ordinance. “If we are going to attract new people back” Leslie said “we need to be able to give them land or they will have to apply for land rather than having to do deals with somebody. Maeve’s painting part of Australia’s Naval Historical collection In our edition of 18th August 2007 we recorded that during a visit to the island of Commander Alex Hawes RAN, commanding officer of HMAS Sirius, Maeve Hitch had presented him a painting which she had done of the original HMS Sirius off Kingston in 1790. Maeve has passed on to us a copy of the following letter which she recently received from Commander Hawes:- “Dear Maeve, I presented your seascape of Sydney Bay, Norfolk Island 1790 to my Executive Officer, Supply Officer and Operations Officer yesterday when I arrived aboard ship. She survived the air journey to Fremantle completely unscathed, and when drawn out of her transit packaging attracted no words for some seconds beyond a combined drawing back of respective breath. Your art truly rendered my officers speechless. Your seascape of the scene has taken pride of place in the Officer’s Mess, HMAS Sirius. I have reserved the right to display it in my cabin when I receive distinguished guests. She is now recorded on the RAN’s Prizes, Relics and Trophies register and will have a place in the Australian Naval historical collection for as long as Australia might see fit to have a Navy. As an Island Nation, I consider that will be some time yet to come. You have honoured us with your generosity. Fondest regards Maeve. See you soon.” Our picture shows Commander Hawes (left), Maeve Hitch and Terence Grube, President of the R.S.L. Memorial Club, with the painting.

It is the story of the younger son who asked for his inheritance early, then went to a far country and spent the money in a party lifestyle until all the money is spent. He then tried to get work, and the only work available is a poorly paid job feeding pigs. We are told that he was so hungry that he even tried to eat the pig food. This went on for a time, and finally he came to his senses. He realized that his father’s hired workers were far better off than he was. They had a warm bed, a roof over their head, and plenty of wholesome food to eat. Here he was barely able to keep body and soul together. “I would be better to go home and try my luck with my father”, the man thought. So he set off and returned home. On the way he practiced his speech to his father; “Father I have made a big mistake, I have been absolutely foolish, I have wasted all my belongings that were really yours because you are still alive, I don’t deserve sympathy or any compassion, but all I ask is that you treat me as a hired worker so that I can get something to eat and somewhere to sleep. Please don’t throw me out.” The story tells us that the father was actually looking out for him, anxiously waiting for him to return. When he was a long way down the road the father saw him, the father ran towards him, the father hugged him, the father kissed him. Yes, the father was so glad to see him, safe and alive. When the son tried to make his speech, the father stoped him. He did not want to hear that now; he had more important things on his mind. He wanted to organise a welcome home party. He wanted to organise new clothes for his son. He wanted to let everyone know that the son is safe and well. This is often referred to as the story of the Prodigal Son, but it really is the story of the forgiving father. It is about God, how he is always ready to forgive his people who are sorry for their life and turn to him in repentance. I see a similarity with this story and the life of . Something happened in the life of John Adams, he turned to God, he asked for forgiveness for his life that was only going downhill, God heard his prayer, God answered his prayer, God gave him the strength to turn around, to change his ways, and then walked with him each day as he tried to teach the others in the community this new understanding. Yes, God turned the whole situation around. God saved the day. Without God’s intervention this whole community would have become extinct. This truly was a work of God. God is still working today. God is just as ready to forgive now as he was then. You, too, can experience this influence in your life. You, too, can experience this turn around in your life. You only need to ask. REG The Guts of It What’s hot in health? The series continues in Macha, Zambia, a rural community with a hospital that I was visiting. The experience was humbling, sitting in the mud-thatched hut, with a dirt floor, sharing this food from the ages. We washed our hands in the traditional way, then Freddy’s mother left us to eat in peace. Many other factors also play an important role. Emotional intelligence includes qualities and abilities such as optimism, problem solving skills, being motivated, hanging in there in the face of frustration, controlling impulses, controlling your mood, and having empathy and hope; the ability to know one’s abilities and to get on with others.

By putting down the other parent, the child feels that’s the way they are thought of as well. As a child matures, longer periods with fewer changeovers may be preferable. Avoid asking children to pass messages to the other parent. Avoid criticising the activities done with the other parent. Don’t put your emotional needs onto the children, they do not need to feel responsible for a parent’s well-being or take on the role of their parent’s friend or helpmate. Avoid listening to their phone conversations with the other parent.

ROAD CLOSURES

Parks Australia advise that, in order to undertake Kerb and Seal work on that portion of Duncombe Bay Road which traverses the National Park (from the cattle grid to the picnic ground), temporary road closures will be in force between 29 October 2007 and 21 December 2007

Once the selected contractor has provided a schedule of works, details of the likely closure periods will be published in local papers and on Norfolk Radio.

Parks apologises for any inconvenience which these closures may cause.

The final completed rebuild of Duncombe Bay Road will retain the country road style and feel, whilst increasing the safety and all weather viability of the surface. The work represents a worthwhile and useful permanent improvement in Norfolk Island’s recreational and tourism infrastructure.
