Video, sponsored by Taylor Made. Three days ago at Del Mar, the GIII Sorrento S. maintained the unbeaten record of Untouched Talent, a filly by Storm Cat out of a daughter of A.P. Indy. A day later, over at Saratoga, the Haskell Invitational S. provided a well-deserved GI success for Bluegrass Cat, a colt by Storm Cat out of a daughter of A.P. Indy. These impressive winners come from a sample of only eight foals of racing age bred to this pattern, which produces 3x4 inbreeding to the legendary Secretariat. No doubt people will be quick to give the credit to the Secretariat inbreeding for the effectiveness of this pairing. After all, Bluegrass Cat Equi-Photo Secretariat was a phenomenal racehorse with a powerful pedigree and he also had a physique which had admirers of the thoroughbred drooling. So inbreeding to him makes excellent sense, or does it? Tony Morris, in his book Thoroughbred Stallions, comprehensively demolished the 1973 Triple Crown winner=s reputation as a stallion: AHe did not supply champions on a regular basis, and he was not even able to provide a reasonable quota of above-average performers; his ratio of 8 per cent stakes winners to foals does not qualify him for even the modest description of >a good sire.= There is no getting away from the fact that he has proved extremely disappointing in his second career.@ It is often difficult to determine to what extent inbreeding has influenced a particular horse=s talents.
