    Türkiye Parazitoloji Dergisi, 31 (2): 150-153, 2007 Türkiye Parazitol Derg. © Türkiye Parazitoloji Derneği © Turkish Society for Parasitology Natural Infection of Helix aspersa (Mollusca: Pulmonata) by Dicrocoeliidae (Digenea) Larval Stages in Izmir, Turkey Gözde GÜRELLİ, Bayram GÖÇMEN Ege University Science Faculty, Department of Zoology, Bornova, Izmir, Turkey SUMMARY: In this study, the prevalence of larval stages of Dicrocoeliidae in the garden snail Helix aspersa Müller, 1774 commonly found in the vicinity of Izmir, Turkey was investigated and some of its histological and morphological features were determined. The molluscs were collected during the spring of 2005. As the result of the investigation, a land snail species, H. aspersa, was found to be an intermediate host in the life cycle of Dicrocoeliidae and it had a prevalence of 0.97 % in the study area. In the present study, H. aspersa has been reported for the first time as an intermediate host of Dicrocoeliid species. The prevalence of infection was highest in March. Key Words: Helix aspersa, larval stage, Dicrocoeliidae, intermediate host, Mollusca Helix aspersa (Mollusca: Pulmonata)’nın Dicrocoeliidae Larval Safhalarıyla İzmir (Türkiye)’de Doğal Enfek- siyonu ÖZET: Bu çalışmada İzmir civarında dağılış gösteren bahçe salyangozu Helix aspersa Müller, 1774 (Mollusca: Pulmonata)’daki Dicro- coeliidae larval safhalarının yaygınlığı araştırılarak, morfolojik ve histolojik özellikleri tespit edilmiştir. Yumuşakçalar 2005 yılının ilk- bahar aylarında toplanmıştır. Araştırma sonucuna gore H. aspersa’nın çalışma alanında %0.97’lik yaygınlıkla Dicrocoeliidae yaşam döngüsüne ara konaklık yapan bir kara salyangozu türü olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışmayla ilk kez H. aspersa’nın Dicrocoeliid türler- ine ara konaklık yaptığı rapor edilmiştir. Enfeksiyon yaygınlığı Mart ayında en yüksek seviyededir.

In the present study, the complete mitochondrial genome of A. hwangtsiyui was sequenced and characterized: it is a 13,973 bp circular DNA molecule and encodes 36 genes (12 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribo- somal RNA genes) as well as two non-coding regions. The A+T content of the A. hwangtsiyui mitogenome is 59.6% and displays a remarkable bias in nucleotide composition with a negative AT skew (–0.437) and a positive GC skew (0.408).

Methods: From 2013 to 2014, copromicroscopical analyses in 190 dairy sheep farms and anatomo-pathological inspections in six slaughterhouses were carried in Sardinia, Italy. Rectal faecal samples were analyzed using the FLOTAC® method, and anatomo-pathological examinations were based on detecting thickened terminal bile ducts (TTBDs). In addition, genetic analyses were conducted on representative DNA samples of adult Dicrocoelium spp. Results: Ninety-seven (51.1%) out of 190 sheep farms were coprologically positive for Dicrocoelium spp. In the liver, on the surface and cut surface, TTBDs were reported in 40.1% (309/770) and 15.3% (118/770) of the animals exam- ined, respectively, with an overall prevalence of 25.5% (196/770). No intraspecifc genetic variation was observed among the Dicrocoelium dendriticum isolates. Conclusions: Our survey reveals the widespread presence of D. dendriticum in Sardinia, although seasonal, geo- graphical and climatic conditions might be key factors in modulating the infection prevalence. Khaleel introduction • Medical helminthology is branch of zoology that studies worms, especially parasitic worms. • The public health impact of medical helminthes is appreciable. • Two billion people are infected by soil -transmitted helminthes such as Ascaris, hookworms, Trichuris trichura and by Schistosomes. • Early childhood infections by soil-transmitted helminthes delays physical and cognitive development. • Other widespread helminthic infections include: onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, dracunculiasis ( Guinea worm disease ), and food-borne trematode and tapeworm infections. • All of these infections cause chronic morbidity and debilitation. • Medical helminthes need to develop in a parasitized host, and sometimes this involves several disparate hosts. • Helminthes parasites are more complex than free-living helminthes, because 1. they have evolved mechanisms to deal with the different environments of their various hosts and living conditions. • 2. They have developed host- finding behaviors, exquisite migration • Patterns within each host, and the ability to evade the host immune and protective responses. • Helminthes: are multicellular eukaryotic animals that generally possess digestive, circulatory, nervous, excretory, and reproductive systems. Some are free-living in soil and water. • Helminthes are studied in microbiology because they cause infectious diseases and most are diagnosed by microscopic examination of eggs or larvae. • Eggs may have striations(lines), a spine, or an operculum ( hatch by which the larva leaves). • Helminthes infect more than one-third of the world population. • Helminthes infections differ from bacterial or protozoan infections because the worms do not usually increase in number in the host. • Symptoms are usually due to 1. The phenomenon is complex, requiring multi-disciplinary approaches. I evaluated host decision making and utilized modern imaging techniques to understand how larvae of the fluke, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, can so radically alter the behaviour of their ant, Formica aserva, hosts. My results showed that infected ants make decisions regarding substrate that uninfected hosts never make. They preferentially attached with their mandibles to flower blossoms that were familiar to them and they preferred flowers that contained attached nestmates.
