your Wimbotsham November 2016 FENMAN BIKE SHOW

This year’s show took place on bank holiday Monday 29th August. The superb weather attracted thousands of visitors on 2, 3, and 4 wheels. This years was our best year to date with 189 bikes entered in the show. Bike entries cover bikes ranging from pre -war (per 1939) to pre 1985 British and overseas. There were numerous catering and trade stalls as well as club stands and the fenman t -shirt stall.

The winner of this year’s best in show was a 1923 BSA350L which was ridden to the show by Michael Boniface from Thorpe. The best club stand was won by Airheads and the lady rider trophy went to Jo Drury also from Shouldham Thorpe. All the winners and photos of the bikes can be found on our web -site: www.fenmanclassic.co.uk

Admission to the show only cost £4 per person with under 16's free and profit from the show going to local charities. Since the show's inception over £110,000 has been given away to various local charities and village amities which include the village school, Air Ambulance, British Red Cross, the village hall, the seat on the village green, St Johns and the village playing field with upkeep and monies to help buy the field for the village, to name just a few. But it’s not just the money we raise that helps the village and local groups it’s also the money that local groups raise such as the tea stall run by the village chapel and hog roast run by local round table.

We have had a couple of years when the weather was not good to us so this year after paying all the bills and keeping some money for next year’s show we are happy to say that we will able to give several thousand pounds away to local charities. We th will be holding a presentation evening at the chequers on 13 November at 6.30pm to present the cheques. If anyone would like to attend please just turn up, we would love to see you there.

This event could and would not take place without the hard work and dedication of a small number of volunteers and the organizers are appealing for extra help with the organizing or just some help on the day.

If you would be interested in helping please contact [email protected] or visit the website www.fenmanclassic.co.uk for more information.

We would also like to thank the village as a whole. This event is now one of East Anglia’s if the country’s biggest classic bike show and no small part of that is the setting. People come from all over the country to show and they love the fact that it’s not just another show in field or showground but it’s a village show. So thanks you again and let’s hope next years is just as good if not better.

your Wimbotsham November 2016 - - A few residents and two parish councillors met on the village green on Sunday 11th September for the first of our Village Walks. It was a warm and sunny, early Au- tumn day, just right for a relaxed walk around the lanes that encompass Wimbot- sham village.

If only we had taken some containers with us because the hedges were laden with blackberries, ripe for the picking. Crab apples, rose hips and sloes too hung in abundance making the hedgerows look very attractive and healthy.

Walking and chatting we covered about 2.5 miles, a distance manageable for many people. Back on the village green sloe gin was served, made from the previous sea- son’s sloe berries; a fitting drink to finish the walk with. - Dress up warmly and wear appropriate footwear.

- your Wimbotsham November 2016 Fly Tipping (in Wimbotsham?) Fly tipping is regularly happening on Lake Drove in the village. Lake Drove is just after the sharp right hand corner at the bottom of Westway on the road to Stow Bridge.

This is reported to the Borough Council and removed quite quickly. Unfortunately fly tipping is becoming more common and we ask you all to remain vigilant to protect our parish from this environmental crime.

Recent fly tipping on Lake Drove, Wimbotsham

Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of waste and is a crime. It consists of items such as: • general household waste • large domestic items (e.g. fridges and mattresses) • commercial waste (e.g. builders' rubble and tyres etc.) • garden refuse • litter or refuse accumulation • soil

Fly tipping is not the same as littering. Fly -tipping can be dangerous. Dumping waste can be hazardous to the public, especially when the waste consists of drums of toxic material, asbestos sheeting or syringes. Fly -tipping can also pollute surrounding land and waterways, damage wildlife and ecosystems and costs the council tax payer significant amounts of money to clear away. It can have a very negative impact on resident’s perceptions and the environment.

your Wimbotsham November 2016 If you find fly tipping… Never touch the waste - it may contain syringes, broken glass, asbestos, toxic chemicals or other hazardous substances.

Never disturb the site - there may be evidence that could help identify the fly -tippers and lead to their prosecution.

Report it to the Borough Council. (01553 616200) What should you do if you witness somebody fly -tipping?

• Note the date, time and place that you saw the fly -tip • What has been fly -tipped and how much and what it looks like. • Any vehicle details and description • Description of the person/people involved • Retain photographic evidence taken • Never approach anyone you see fly -tipping - they could become violent • Pass on your contact details (in case Borough Council officers have trouble locating the fly -tip)

Local Authorities have a responsibility for dealing with fly tipping on public land. Clearing fly -tipping from private land is the responsibility of the landowner. But if there is enough evidence, the Local Authority will investigate either case. If you are responsible for land or are a private land owner, you must ensure that your land is as secure as is practically possible.

Fly tipping is a criminal offence that is punishable by a significant fine or imprisonment. If you find fly tipping you should report it to the Borough Council (01553 616200) or go to wwwwest -norfolk.gov.uk.

Householders beware : If you are having alterations or improvements made to your house by a company or you pay for a trade waste collection, make sure they are disposing of the waste correctly. By law, householders are responsible for checking that contractors are correctly disposing of waste. If in doubt, check. Ask to see a waste transfer certificate/licence and check whether a company is registered with the environment agency’s public register.

Consider hiring a skip and/or some DIY waste can be taken to your local Household Waste Site which is Part -time Recycling Centre, Road, . PE33 9DX.

26 your Wimbotsham November 2016 More Buses for Wimbotsham!

From the 14 November Wimbotsham will be getting more bus services!

The existing service 47, although good, does not give people very long in Downham Market, especially if they have appointments at the doctors. This was the general feeling from spending a day on the West Norfolk Community Transport service talking to the passengers.

The new 471 service which will start on the 14 November, will operate Monday to Friday by West Norfolk Community Transport.

The existing 47 service will continue in its current form and the 471 will see additional journeys, as the timetable below;

Hopefully this will offer a much better bus service for the residents of Wimbotsham.

The 0915 bus will fall outside of the 0930 Concessionary Pass Scheme so will require payment.

There will also be a direct bus to King’s Lynn as well which goes into Wimbotsham village.

Wimbotsham Coal Dole makes payments to assist the poor of the village with fuel costs

Dating from 1911, the 100 Acre Common Charity was established to assist the ‘poor inhabitants’ of Downham Market, & Wimbotsham through the distribution of fuel. This generally being coal. Hence the name Wimbotsham Coal Dole.

Today the charity makes payments each December to assist the poor of the villages with fuel costs as coal is no longer used by most to heat their homes.

Historically most payments have been made to the elderly. However, individuals of any age or from any organisation within the parish of Wimbotsham who feel they are in hardship and in need of assistance with fuel costs may apply.

As general guidance, pensioners existing solely on the state pension, single parent families, those on sickness benefit, income support or job seekers allowance could apply. This list is not exhaustive but gives a general idea of those who the Coal Dole expect to help. This guidance is in keeping with the aims of the Charity, and the terms of the Trust Deed, to benefit the poor inhabitants.

Funds are distributed at the discretion of the trustees based on the information provided by applicants. 29 your Wimbotsham November 2016 Please answer questions accurately and honestly to the best of your knowledge, providing as much supporting information as you feel appropriate. The popular LILY (Living Independently in Later Years) initiative has been extended with the addition of Lily Advisors who will attend events and activities in the local community to provide advice and information, and the introduction of dementia -friendly home assessments. Cllr Adrian Lawrence, borough council cabinet member for Housing and Community, explained: "LILY was designed to make it much easier for older people, their families, friends and carers to access information about services, advice, activities and events that will help them to continue to live safely and independently in their own home for longer. "When the project began this was through the online directory asklily.org.uk or by calling 01553 616200." The LILY Online Directory brings together over 1000 services, activities and events – including information and advice on money matters, social activities, health, transport and more, making it easy for people to find the contacts and information they need. It also includes sections for a local ‘What’s On’ guide, local news page, NHS Choices information and the site can be searched by category, key words, location or via the sites pre -populated quick links. Cllr Lawrence continued: "Now we have extended the initiative further so that we have advisors who are available to attend events such as luncheon clubs, neighbourhood meetings, social or community group events, to talk about the LILY initiative and how it can help. They will have mobile technology so that they can show people how to find their way around the online directory to access the support, advice and information that they need." The events/locations that the LILY advisers will be attending can be found on the ‘News’ page of the LILY Online Directory. Another addition to the LILY project is the funding dementia -friendly home assessments. These assessment will recommend minor adjustments or the introduction of certain measures to enable people with dementia to stay safely in their own home for longer. Measures that could be considered include signage or colour differentiation for those who suffer with memory loss and are visually impaired, installation of a Careline personal alarm, improved lighting arrangements, smoke detectors and easy -to -use taps along with recommendations for other adaptations that may reduce any potential risk to the resident. To request a Dementia Friendly Home Assessment please call 01553 760671
