  • Recommendation on How Avoid Interference Issues in Companion and Organized Avalanche Rescue
Recommendation on how avoid Interference Issues in companion and organized avalanche rescue Manuel Genswein, Switzerland Dale Atkins, Recco AB and Vice President of the ICAR Avalanche Commission Joe Obad, CEO Canadian Avalanche Association Emily Grady, Education Officer Industry Training Programs, Canadian Avalanche Association Marc Piché, Technical Director, Association of Canadian Mountain Guides Todd Guyn, Mountain Safety Manager, Canadian Mountain Holidays Rob Whelan, Technical Advisor and Ski Guide, Canadian Mountain Holidays Kjetil Brattlien, Senior Engineer, Norwegian Geotechnical Institute Electronic avalanche rescue devices such as 457kHz transceivers and Recco are today the primary search tools in companion and organized rescue. The requirement for a long receive range in order to shorten rescue time asks for highly sensitive receivers. Such highly sensitive receivers are vulnerable to be influenced by interference from other electronic devices, but as well metal parts and passive electronics may detune the antennas or act as a unwanted reflector in the case of a Recco search. The percentage of users who carry a wide range of electronic devices such as mobile phones, helmet cameras, music players, heart rate monitors etc in the outdoors has considerably increased over time and therefore the negative influence on an efficient search effort has in several cases lead to loss of valuable rescue time and greatly disturbed the rescuers on the accident site. The study includes a detailed analysis on the mechanisms of interference, a matrix of influence and potential consequences as well as a new, user group specific recommendation on how to avoid interference issues in companion and organized rescue. Keywords: Avalanche rescue, interference, Transceiver, Recco Introduction Metal parts, magnets and any kind of passive or reduction of transmitted field strength active electronics potentially cause interference (TX) for a transceiver.

From Zero to My Own Hero: An Intersectional Feminist Analysis of the Woman Superhero’s Challenge to Humanity in Watchmen and Jessica Jones Louise Stenbak Simonsen & Sabina Kox Thorsen 10th semester, MA Dissertation Engelsk Almen, Aalborg University Supervisor: Mia Rendix 02-06-2020 Characters: 317649 Simonsen & Thorsen 1 Abstract The image of women in the superhero genre has for many years been dominated by how it is produced as a mirror to the masculine. However, this image is now beginning to be disrupted by feminist attempts at diversifying representations. This paper aims to examine Watchmen and the first season of Jessica Jones as cultural representations and new voices of women which materialise the category as a transgressive, challenging force to assumedly fixed structures of gender, race and sexuality. As Jessica Jones speaks from a White feminist perspective, and Watchmen from a Black feminist perspective, we explore how the texts can be combined to expand the category of women. The texts show the discourses, regimes of truth, and forms of violence which seek to regulate women, and in exposing these tools of domination, the texts disrupt the fixed categories and definitions of women and question the limits of performativity. In spite of women being shown to be materialised beyond the phallogocentric economy of signification, the two series still limit gender to a biological determinism that assumes a normativity of social structures and relations of power. However, because the texts are voices of women, they are the first step of many towards a multitude of untold, endless possibilities of gender and racial representation.

The Green Scare: Radical environmental activism and the invention of “eco-terror- ism” in American superhero comics from 1970 to 1990 by Brendan James Lacy A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfi llment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Architecture Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2021 © Brendan James Lacy 2021 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required fi nal revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract American environmentalism became a recognizable social move- ment in the 1960s. In the following two decades the movement evolved to represent a diverse set of philosophies and developed new protest methods. In the early 1990s law enforcement and govern- ment offi cials in America, with support from extraction industries, created an image of the radical environmental movement as danger- ous “eco-terrorists.” Th e concept was deployed in an eff ort to de-val- ue the environmental movement’s position at a time of heightened environmental consciousness. With the concept in place members of the movement became easier to detain and the public easier to deter through political repression. Th e concept of “eco-terrorism” enters popular media relatively quickly indicated by the proliferation of superhero comics in the ear- ly 1990s that present villainous environmental activists as “eco-ter- rorists.” Th is imagery contrasts comics from 1970 which depicted superheroes as working alongside activists for the betterment of the world.

While it is obvious. that these comic books can be used in the classroom as a source of reading material, it is tot so obvious that these comic books, with great economy, simplicity, and narrative density, can be used to further introduce novice readers to the techniques found in narrative and to the terms employed in the study and discussion of a narrative. The output of the Marvel Conics Group in particular is literate, is both narratively and pbSlosophically sophisticated, and is ethically and morally responsible. Some of the narrative tecbntques found in the stories, such as the Spider-Man episodes, include foreshadowing, a dramatic fiction narrator, flashback, irony, symbolism, metaphor, Biblical and historical allusions, and mythological allusions.4MKM1 4 4 *********************************************************************** * Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made * * from the original document. * *********************************************************************** ) U SOEPANTMENTO, HEALD..
