Cesar enters play tonight with a 40-game hit streak, a new Texas League record. The previous mark of 37 games was set by El Paso’s Bob- by Trevino in 1969. Cesar, who has hit safely in 50 of the last 52 games, owns the longest hit streak in the minors this year. He shattered the Hooks’ team record of 27, set by OF Jorge Cortes in 2006. The hit streak has continued in his Cesar’s final at-bat in the 3 of the last 5 games. During this remarkable streak, Cesar is batting .379 with 26 runs scored, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 7 home runs, 29 RBIs, and a .419 OBP. The 23-year-old out of Santo Domingo, DR missed 4 games on the previous road trip due to a sore right thumb. Cesar enters play tonight with a Texas League best .352 batting average. He also ranks among the circuit leaders in hits (88, 4th), slugging percentage (.532, 4th), and total bases (133, 5th). Only 15 players in the 151-year history of Minor League Baseball boast a longer hit streak than Cesar. The MiLB record for longest hitting streak is 69 games, established in 1919 by Joe Wilhoit of the Wichita Jobbers of the Western League. In addition to his Major League best 56-game hit streak, Joe DiMaggio hit safely in 61 consecutive games during the 1933 season for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League. Cesar is chasing the modern record of 50 games, set in 2016 by Indians catching prospect Francisco Mejia with High-A Lynchburg. STREAKING: This 10-game win streak is the longest for the Hooks since the 2016 squad set the club record by rolling up 11 consecutive wins May 9-21. During this 10-game surge, Hooks pitchers own a 2.20 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, striking out 87 against 68 hits (2 HR) and 28 walks in 90.0 innings. Meanwhile, Corpus Christi is averaging 5.4 runs per game while hitting .262 with 16 doubles, 4 triples, and 7 home runs. FILL IN THE BLANK: Corpus Christi has permitted just 4 runs in the last 40 innings, a span of 5 games. The Hooks rank 2nd in the Texas League with a 3.56 ERA. Corpus Christi leads the TL with 712 strikeouts, fanning 9.6 batters per 9 IP. The Hooks have whitewashed the opposition 5 times this season, and 3 of those shutout have come within the last 6 games. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL: The Hooks, who are season-best 22 games over .500, own the 2nd-best record in Minor League Baseball at 48-26 (.649). Bowling Green, Tampa Bay’s Midwest League affiliate, leads the minors with a 49-23 (.681) mark. Corpus Christi is 2.0 games better than the Fresno Grizzlies, who rank 4th in MiLB at 46-29 (.613). The Hooks have won 12 of their last 13, and have avoided back-to-back losses since dropping 2 in a row May 24-25. The Tex- as League South first-half champs are 21-5 since May 26. MORE MANDOLIN MAGIC?: With bluegrass music wafting throughout Whataburger Field pregame, the Hooks are 5-0 on Sundays at home this season. In these 5 triumphs, Corpus Christi has outscored the opposition 40-18. The success at Whataburger Field extends beyond Sundays, as the team owns the best Double-A home record at 28-11 (.718). The Hooks have won 19 of their last 25 games here in the Sparkling City.

Randy Cesar accounted for most of Corpus Christi’s five hits, go- ing 3-for-4. Cesar’s first inning double extended his hitting streak to 42 games, a new Texas League record. Jorge Alcala absorbed the tough-luck loss, scattering five hits and two runs over 5 1/3 innings. Arkansas capitalized on a lead-off free pass in the fourth with Donnie Walton’s sac fly to center field. Chuck Taylor opened the sixth with a triple and promptly scored on Eric Filia’s base hit up the middle. Misiewicz, making his first Double-A appearance in nearly a month following a long stay on the DL, stranded five over his four innings of work. Spencer Herrmann struck out four and retired the nine men he faced. Friday’s result spoiled a fine start by Akeem Bostick who hurled five shutout frames. Bostick scattered four hits and one walk while striking out four. Travs starter Nathan Bannister posted zeros through the first six in- nings. Corpus Christi finally broke through in the seventh. Yordan Alvarez cracked a two-out double and promptly came home on Lorenzo Quintana’ single into left-center. Rehabbing Astro Joe Smith survived three singles in the home half after striking out Donnie Walton to strand the bases loaded. Car- los Sierra retired all six batters he faced to preserve the 1-0 Hooks edge. Dario Pizzano opened the ninth and greeted Kit Scheetz (1- 1) with a triple over the head of Carmen Benedetti in right field. One out later, drawn-in second baseman Ryne Birk misplayed a ground ball, allowing Pizzano to score the tying run. Joe De Carlo was next and worked a walk. Nine-hole hitter Yonathan Mendoza notched a base hit, loading the bases for the top of the Travs lineup. Braden Bishop responded by lining an 0-2 pitch into right field for an RBI single to end the ballgame.
