With works by 33 artists on display, it introduces the essential currents that once revolutionized the canon of classic motifs and photographic practices. The effects of this have reached far beyond the country’s borders to the present day. The main focus of the works is on offering a visual survey of the United States by depicting its people and their living environments. A microcosm frequently viewed through the lens of everyday occurrences permits us to draw conclusions about the prevalent political circumstances and social conditions in the United States, capturing the country and its inhabitants in their idiosyncrasies and contradictions. In several instances, artists having immigrated from Europe successfully perceived hitherto unknown aspects through their eyes as outsiders, thus providing new impulses. -

WENDY EWALD (b. Detroit, USA, 1951) For over forty years Wendy Ewald has collaborated in art projects with children, families, women, and teachers in Labrador, Colombia, India, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Holland, Mexico, and the United States. Starting as documentary investigations of places and communities, Ewald’s projects probe questions of identity and cultural differences. In her work with children she encourages them to use cameras to record themselves, their families, and their communities, and to articulate their fantasies and dreams. Ewald herself often makes photographs within the communities she works with and has the children mark or write on her negatives, thereby challenging the concept of who actually makes an image, who is the photographer, who the subject, who is the observer and who the observed. In blurring the distinction of individual authorship and throwing into doubt the artist’s intentions, power, and identity, Ewald creates opportunities to look at the meaning and use of photographic images in our lives with fresh perceptions. Wendy Ewald has received many honors, including a MacArthur Fellowship, a Guggenheim fellowship, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Andy Warhol Foundation, the Rauschenberg Foundation, and the Fulbright Commission. She was also a senior fellow at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at the New School from 2000-2002. She has had solo exhibitions at the International Center of Photography in New York, the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, the George Eastman House in Rochester, Nederlands Foto Institute in Rotterdam, the Fotomuseum in Wintherthur, Switzerland, the Corcoran Gallery of American Art, and The Queens Museum among others. -

THOMAS STRUTH Born in Geldern, Germany in 1954 Lives and works in Berlin (Germany) and New York (United States) Thomas Struth is regarded as one of the world’s foremost contemporary artists. From 1973 to 1980, Struth studied at the State Academy of Art in Düsseldorf. In 1977 he was the first student to receive a scholarship from the Düs- seldorf Academy to live and work in New York. There he created a series of black-and-white urban landscapes, which he showed in his first solo exhibition at P.S.1, New York, in 1978. In the mid-1980s, he started on a series of portraits of individuals and families illustrating his vision of photography as a science-derived tool for psychological investigation. This continuing work examines the personal and cultural dynamics that condition our self-image, exploring how this self-image will influence our individual and collective identities. From 1989 to 2005, Struth developed his best-known series, the Museum Photographs, in which he captures individuals and crowds looking at iconic works of Western art in the great museums of the world. Over the last fifteen years, Struth has steadily expanded his repertoire with other themes. These include New Pictures from Paradise (1998–2007), gathering places for religious believers or tourists (from 1998), and, beginning in 2007, images from the fields of science and research, industrial production and technology, which show how our faith in progress can be visually represented as a process of group dynamics. Biography Evelyn Hofer Evelyn Hofer was born in Marburg, Germany in 1922 and died in 2009 in Mexico City. In the years in between, Hofer created a body of work that both looked back to the tradition of August Sander and anticipated the color work of William Eggleston, causing her to be called "the most famous unknown photographer in America" by New York Times art critic Hilton Kramer – a devout supporter of her work. Hofer's work has influenced such photographers as Thomas Struth, Joel Sternfeld, Adam Bartos, Rineke Dijkstra, Judith Joy Ross, and Alex Soth. There have been retrospectives of her work at the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne (1994); the Aarggauer Kunsthaus in Switzerland (2004); and the Fotomuseum The Hague (2006). Last year her work was shown in Munich's Villa Stuck as part of the Goetz Collection in the exhibition "Street Life and Home Stories" alongside the work of the photographers William Eggleston, August Sander, Diane Arbus, Thomas Struth, and Nan Goldin. When Hofer was eleven her family fled Nazi Germany for Switzerland. She decided she wanted to be a photographer and set about it methodically. She began with an apprenticeship at the Studio Bettina, a portrait studio, and took private lessons with Hans Finsler, one of the pioneers of the "New Objectivity" movement. Hofer's studies covered everything from photographic technique to art theory. She didn't just learn composition and the underlying theories of aesthetics, she also learned the chemistry involved in producing prints. Beginning in the early 1960s she became one of the first fine art photographers to adopt the use of color film and the complicated dye transfer printing process as a regular practice. -

The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College For Immediate Release Photography Exhibition ‘This Place’ will be presented by Tang Teaching Museum in collaboration with museums at Colgate, Hamilton and UAlbany The Tang to feature work by Wendy Ewald, Gilles Peress, Stephen Shore, Nick Waplington that explores Israel and the West Bank SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (December 12, 2017) — The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College is leading a four-campus exhibition of This Place, which features more than 600 images by twelve internationally acclaimed photographers who explore the personal and public spaces in Israel and the West Bank. Opening February 3 through April 22, 2018, the Tang’s presentation will feature work by four of the twelve photographers, who each took different approaches, highlighting how photography can illuminate multiple perspectives on a complex topic: Wendy Ewald, taught and photographed children and adults in fourteen communities in Israel and the West Bank in their homes and villages, collecting tens of thousands of digital images, a selection of which is on display at the Tang Museum; Gilles Peress photographed the Road of Patriarchs from Hebron to Jerusalem and the Palestinian village of Silwan in East Jerusalem, areas he considers to be fault lines in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; Stephen Shore used a his 8 x 10 view camera and a digital camera to photograph landscapes and cityscapes, sacred places, street scenes, and community; and Nick Waplington created a photographic survey of Jewish settlements in the West Bank through both family portraits and images of the natural and built environment. -

Hillman, comprising 117 works judiciously acquired by William Hillman over the past three decades. With a sophisticated eye and tremendous dedication to photography, Mr. Hillman has built a comprehensive collection by pursuing consummate examples from top photographers spanning the history of the medium. In Hillman’s dedication to both photography and his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, his primary mission over the past three decades has been to build a world-class collection that will ultimately be gifted to the Carnegie Museum of Art. “There are gaps in the vintage acquisitions and the need to support and strengthen the contemporary component of this endeavor,” Mr. Hillman has stated. Seven exhibitions, an installation open to the public, as well as events and experimental workshops, will cover the history of photography from the end of the 19th century to today. This new programme reflects different photographic approaches and styles, with a selection of works from around the world that explore everyday life and its banality. Throughout her career, photographer Lisette Model never ceased to affirm the importance of the individual perspective, in both her work and her teaching. The Institut pour la photographie pays tribute to her with a new exhibition bringing together four great figures of American photography around of her work: Leon Levinstein, Diane Arbus, Rosalind Fox Solomon and Mary Ellen Mark. Since 2017, Laura Henno has immersed herself in the lost city of Slab City in the heart of the Californian desert. The Institute supports the artist, who comes from the Region, with the production of previously unpublished prints for this new exhibition project Radical Devotion. Thomas Struth gives us a glimpse of our relationship to everyday life through a documentary approach that is carefully crafted to reveal the complexity of the ordinary. Begun in 1986, his psychological and sociological portraits of families revisit the traditional genre of family portraiture.
