  • Florida's Third Largest City, with a Population of Over 330,000 Residents, Is Tampa. It Is Believed That This Famous City
Tampa Written by Mrs. Lovelady Florida’s third largest city, with a population of over 330,000 residents, is Tampa. It is believed that this famous city was named by its original inhabitants, the Calusa Indians. Tampa means, “Sticks of Fire,” due to the frequent lightning storms the Calusa people encountered. This historical city once stationed Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders, while they waited to ship out for the Spanish-American War in 1898. Later, Tampa made history in 1914, when the world’s first scheduled passenger flight flew from St. Pete to Tampa. I think you would agree, Tampa is one of the greatest Florida cities to visit because of its incredible sports teams, family-fun attractions, and interesting parks and museums. To start off, Tampa is an incredible city to travel to because of its well-known sports teams. Raymond James stadium, also called “Ray-Jay’” is home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Guests are welcomed by Captain Fear who resides in the captain's quarters of the ship, and uses the crow's nest to keep watch over Tampa every night. This ship is 103 feet tall, and weighs an astonishing 43 tons. An animated parrot can be seen on the stern of the pirate ship. This parrot is even known to pick fans from the crowd and talks to those passing by. The Buccaneers’ head coach is Lovie Smith. Some of the Buccaneers’ players include: Jameis Winston, Vincent Jackson, and Doug Martin. The outdoor stadium has over 65,000 seats and is famous for hosting Super Bowl XXXV and Super Bowl XLIII.

Volume 25 Number 4 APRIL 2008 April 16, 2008 7:00 pm Hillsborough Extension Office Bluebirds and Boxes Presented by Mary Miller The North American bluebirds are cavity nesters and were almost wiped out when the English house sparrow was introduced in 1851 and took over their nesting cavities. This presentation tells of the remarkable recovery of the bluebird through conservation efforts of individuals and the American Bluebird Society, which instituted the concept of bluebird trails. The Tampa Audubon Society maintains 41 bluebird boxes at Flatwoods Park along the walking/biking/skating trail. Even though the trail has been there for 20 years, it has just been monitored for the last three years and this presentation will give you the very encouraging results. Cane Toad, © Stephen Johnson Our speaker, Mary Miller, is a Missouri native, University of Missouri and University of South Florida graduate and has lived in Panama, Delaware, and Puerto Rico before settling in Tampa 30 years ago. Mary beganPhoto: her Shawna prof Himelrightessional career as an elementary teacher and ended as the Recycling Coordinator for the Pasco County School District. She lives with her husband, John and granddaughter, Liz, and eagerly jumped at the chance to monitor the Flatwoods Park Bluebird Trail when she retired three years ago. She is vice-president of the Suncoast Native Plant Society, a volunteer at the Lettuce Lake Park Audubon Resource Center, a Friends of the Library bookstore volunteer, and loves to travel, garden, and read.

January 2021 Volume 38, Number 1 This is an online meeting. We will send you a link the day before the meeting. We will be back with in-person meetings as soon as our venues are open and safe. January 20, 7:00 pm Program Going Beyond Oaks in Our Planted Landscapes By Shirley Denton Our program this month is a request from one of our Suncoast members. She asked about trees, other than live oaks, that are suitable for planted landscapes in Hillsborough County. This program will address that question and put it into the context of why one would choose specific tree species – shade, seasonality, flowers and fruits, wildlife, site conditions, landscape design, availability, etc. The program will consider Florida native overstory and understory trees that grow well in Hillsborough County. Most are found naturally in the county. Shirley Denton is a long- term Suncoast Chapter member. She has a PhD in Forest Ecology and 30 years of experience as a plant ecologist. Sweetgum Liquidambar styraciflua 1 January Field Trip Saturday, January 23 Contact Tina Patterson for time and meeting location and to register.. • Getting Around Tampa
Getting around Tampa Famous for its luxury resorts, historical venues and theme parks, Tampa is a prosperous city in West Central Florida that offers loads of entertainment. Tampa is the second-largest city in West Central Florida and has become a thriving tourist destination. The city is divided into five districts, where you can explore the historic town of Ybor City and discover the trendy downtown area, featuring posh restaurants and vibrant nightlife. Getting there Most UK visitors begin their journey at Tampa International Airport (TPA), located 11kms west of the central business district. It offers more than 70 direct flights to both domestic and international destinations, including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Although most flights departing from the UK do not directly fly into Tampa, many air carriers offer flights that have only one short layover. Continental Airlines, British Airways and US Airways are just some of the air carries that offer flights from the UK to Tampa. Including layover time, you can find flights that reach Tampa in less than 13 hours. Depending on your method of transportation and traffic conditions, driving time to downtown Tampa is approximately 20 minutes. You can take a shuttle or a taxi, hire a limousine service, or book a rental car at the airport. If you are not planning on renting a car, a taxi or a shuttle service will be your cheapest option. Most taxis charge a flat rate. Climate Experiencing hot summer days and frequent rainfall, Tampa offers a humid, subtropical climate with average temperature highs reaching from 21°C to 32°C.
