    Chips from the Buzzsaw Weekly Newsletter of the Rotary Club of West Sacramento Volume 70, No 19 December 17, 2018 Don Carrithers Professional Baseball Player Don signed his first professional contract with the Giants at the BIRDISM age of 17. After 2 1/2 years in the minor leagues, Don joined the San Francisco Giants in Philadelphia and started his first game in the old Connie Mack Stadium. When the Giants returned to What, no socks to Candlestick Park, Don’s locker was between Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Millie McCovey. At the age of 20 he won his first major throw at me? league game at Wrigley Field against the Cubs. Don got his first major league shutout in 1971 against the Houston Astros. That year the Giants won the Western Division Pennant. The starting rotation was Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry, Ron Bryant and Don Carrithers. Also that year, Don’s High School teammate Jim Barr joined the Giants pitching staff. Don was traded from the Giants to the Montreal Expos in the Spring of 1974. He spent 3 seasons with the Expos before being sold to the Minnesota Twins. He got his first major league hit against Hall of Famer Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals. Don was also lucky enough to face :Home Run King” Hank Aaron many times. Don gave up runs #633 and #710 to “Hammerin” Hank. Don is retired and currently lives in Elk Grove, California.
