Reserves Wrap

Williamstown Reserves have finished the home and away series in second place on percentage with a 15—3 win / loss ratio.

AFL Victoria have revamped the Reserves finals format in 2009 with the finals over a 3 week period with a final 6 in operation. In Week 1 of the finals both Box Hill and Williamstown will have a week off and automatically progress to a cut throat preliminary final in Week 2 (September 12 / 13). Williamstown will play the winner of the Coburg Tigers vs Sandringham game which will be played this weekend. The two winners of the Preliminary Finals will progress to the Reserves Grand Final which will be played as a Curtain Raiser to a Senior Preliminary Final at Port Melbourne in Week 3 (September 19 / 20).

Williamstown Reserves won their opening 12 games in impressive fashion before consecutive losses to Box Hill, Sandringham and North Ballarat saw the side surrender top spot to Box Hill who have won 11 consecutive games to finish on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away series. During the 3 losses a run of injuries with the Western Bulldogs and also to the Williamstown list exposed our depth but since that period players have returned and Coach Saade Ghazi is confident of his team defending their premiership status in a strong fashion. Tom Langlands and Matthew Cravino have been outstanding leaders at Reserves level and 2008 Premiership players Matthew Grossman, Nick Geor- giadis, Luke Cartelli, Josh Young and Matthew Miller have set an excellent example and been significant contributors. Mick Tanner has been in career best form over the last 8 weeks and first year players Dane Rampe, Dean Muir, David Isbister, Trent Lee, David Sablich and John Nicolopoulos have been important. Western Bulldogs Rookies John Shaw, Jamason Daniels, James Mulligan, Henry White and Chris Ogle have been solid players whilst Malcolm Lynch, Liam Jones and Ayce Cordy have performed very well at this level.

THE WORD FROM WILLIAMSTOWN— SEPT 2009 Check us out at www.williamstown.aflvic.com.au Page 3 Seagulls Development from Within Many people have questioned why the Williamstown Reserves have been so strong since 2001 and why they have performed at such a high level during this time. A quick look at their results is very impressive –

2001 Runner Up 2006 Runners Up 2002 Premiers 2007 Third 2003 Premiers 2008 Premiers

2004 Runners Up 2009 ???? (currently equal top of the ladder) 2005 Premiers

A key ingredient has been the club’s ability to retain players during this period and for players “to belong” instead of arriving at the club to “try out”. Many VFL Clubs have struggled to hold onto their players and consistently turn over 60-65% of their list on an annual basis. Williamstown have always placed a high importance on their Reserves side and the welfare and support which the Club provides for each individual is very strong. The quality and calibre of our Reserves Coach has also been very strong – Bruce Davis (2000 – 2001), Anthony Eames (2002 – 2007) and Saade Ghazi (2008 – 2009). Also the guidance and strong support of Senior Coach Brad Gotch (2002 – 2009) has been critical.

The strength of Williamstown has been to develop these young players not just with their football but also their maturity as young men in society and also to educate them with their leadership skills so that they could also develop into captain coaches at lower football levels.

Williamstown breeds an attitude that “players pick themselves” through performance and actions and there have been many examples of players who have played for an extended period for the Club doing an apprenticeship before realising their football dreams.

Liam Picken begun in our Reserves and then graduated to our Seniors before being selected as an AFL Rookie with the Western Bulldogs and has now played 20 AFL games and looks set to play AFL finals this season. Liam played in our Reserves Premiership in 2005, losing Reserves Grand Final side in 2006 before winning our Seniors Best and Fairest in 2008.

A number of players have graduated from our Club after playing mainly Reserves but also played Senior football and have had success as a captain coach – Luke Theodore (2007 Spotswood A Grade Premiership Coach) and Ben Kelly (2008 Spotswood A Grade Premiership Coach). Matthew Pearce is captain coach of Avondale Heights in the Essendon F.L and Steve Zavalas was captain coach of Albion in the WRFL in 2008. Christin Macri had premiership success with Ganmain Grong Grong Matong in the Riverina F.L and Nathan Juegan is captain coach of the undefeated Parkside in Second Division of the WRFL. Troy Carrick was also ocaptain coach of Epping in the Diamond Valley FL.

Other players have graduated to higher levels after playing in a Reserves Premiership side with Williamstown – Heath Lawry was a member of a Central Districts Senior premiership in the SANFL as was Luke Jarrad with the Eagles in the SANFL.

David Round went on to win 2 Grogan Medals in the QAFL, Paul Shelton became Coburg’s VFL Senior captain and Daniel King won two Diamond Valley competition Best and Fairest medals.

This year we have seen some players have senior VFL debuts after long periods playing Reserves football with our Club – Matthew Grossman made his Senior debut in Round 16 after being on our list for 5 years and playing 62 Reserves games. Matthew Cravino is in his fourth year and had played 60 Reserves games before debuting against Werribee in Round 11. Last week Nick Georgiadis in his third year and 41 Reserves games made his impressive Senior debut.

Not all youngsters have to serve a long apprenticeship – this year Dylan Joyce and Xavier Gotch joined Williamstown after winning TAC Cup Best and Fairest’s at Calder Cannons and Oakleigh Chargers and have played Senior VFL football. Joyce (11 Senior and 7 Reserve games) and Gotch (12 Senior and 6 Reserves games) have established themselves as key players in our Senior side in their debut seasons.

A quick look at the careers of Patrick Rose, Scott Meyer, David Stretton, Liam Picken and Tom Langlands provides interesting reading. All 5 players joined Williamstown in 2005 after playing TAC Cup football at North Ballarat Rebels (Picken), Gippsland Power (Meyer) and Western Jets (Rose, Stretton, Langlands). All 5 played in our 2005 Reserves Premiership together, Stretton won the 2006 A. Todd Medal as the competition Best and Fairest in the VFL Reserves competition, Rose, Meyer and Stretton represented the VFL against the SANFL in 2008, Langlands is now Vice Captain of Williamstown and Picken is playing AFL football with the Bulldogs. These players all developed in our environment and their commitment is now being rewarded.
