EUROPEAN COMMISSION - PRESS RELEASE 'Creative Europe' at Berlinale Film Festival Brussels 9 February - Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, will present the Commission's proposal for the new 'Creative Europe' programme at the Berlinale International Film Festival on 11/12 February. The Commission has proposed a budget of €1.8 billion over the 2014-2020 period for Creative Europe; of this, more than €900 million would be allocated to its 'MEDIA' arm, which supports the European film industry and the audiovisual sector. "Europe can provide significant added value through targeted investment in the audiovisual and cultural sectors, which are important contributors to growth and jobs. Creative Europe will help the European film industry to respond to the challenges of digitisation and globalisation, while at the same time helping us to safeguard and promote Europe's cultural and linguistic diversity," commented Commissioner Vassiliou. For two weeks (9-19 February), the 62nd Berlinale film festival will screen some of the best current European and international films, including 18 European films supported by the MEDIA programme (see list in annex); in total they have received more than €1.6 million, mainly for film development and distribution throughout Europe . The European Commission will have a MEDIA area at the festival, hosting around 175 professionals including producers, distributors and trainers. In addition, the Commission is supporting four specific aspects of the Berlinale: • 'Shooting Stars' is an initiative which aims to promote new acting talent. Ten actors from across Europe are chosen by a panel of experts from potential candidates nominated by the member organisations of the European Film Promotion (EFP) body. The 10 stars of tomorrow are presented to the industry, press and public at the festival, and this is often the launch-pad for an international career.This year's Shooting Stars are: Bill Skarsgård (Sweden), Ana Ularu (Romania), Anna Maria Mühe (Germany), Adèle Haenel (France), Isabella Ragonese (Italy), Riz Ahmed (United Kingdom), Antonia Campbell- Hughes (Ireland), Jakub Gierszal (Poland), Hilmar Gudjónsson (Iceland), and Max Hubacher (Switzerland). • Previous 'Shooting Stars' include Daniel Brühl (Good Bye, Lenin!, Inglorious Basterds), Daniel Craig (Layer Cake, Casino Royale), Ludivine Sagnier (Swimming Pool, Un secret), Maria Bonnevie (The Banishment), Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener, The Whistleblower), Moritz Bleibtreu (The Baader Meinhof Complex, Soul Kitchen), Johanna Wokalek (The Baader Meinhof Complex) and Nina Hoss (Wolfsburg, Yella). MEDIA provides financing for 'Shooting Stars' through support for European Film Promotion, which received €500,000 in 2012 (50% of its total budget). IP/12/117 • The Berlinale Co-production Market, which presents around 40 film projects each year to potential investors. Around 65% of the projects originate in Europe. MEDIA has supported the market since 2005 and contributed €105 000 for the 2012 event. • The Berlinale Talent Campus is a training event for more than 350 young filmmakers from all over the world, who participate in workshops and master classes given by leading experts in various fields. In the past, it has given many young directors a first step towards an international career. The Campus was launched in 2002 by Dieter Kosslick (Director of the Berlinale), Paul Trijbits (executive producer of Jane Eyre, Tamara Drewe) and Klaus Keil (former chief executive of Filmboard/ Medienboard). Collaborators have included the film directors Mike Leigh (this year's head of the international jury), Wim Wenders, Jia Zhangke, Anthony Mingella, and the actress Juliette Binoche. MEDIA contributes €300,000 per year, which is half of the event budget. • The Berlinale Residency is an international fellowship programme which enables six filmmakers to bring their projects to Berlin for four months starting in September. It is supported through MEDIA Mundus, the international version of the MEDIA programme. Overall, the MEDIA programme is contributing €755 million to support Europe's film industry from 2007-2013, with a focus on improving the distribution and promotion of European films and strengthening the competitiveness of the sector.     ACTIVITY RESULTS FOR 2019 Created in 1989, Eurimages is the Council of Europe Fund for the support of co-production, distribution and exhibition of international cinematographic works. With the accession of Montenegro and the second non-member state of the Council of Europe, Argentina, the Fund brought together 40 countries as of December 2019. The Fund is governed by a Board of management composed of national representatives of the member States. Since 1 January 2017, this Board has been chaired by Catherine Trautmann. In the tradition of filmmakers like Stephen Frears, Ken Loach, Michael Winterbottom or Mike Leigh, who have faithfully documented the city’s transformation from an imperial capital to a global cosmopolis, Minghella and Bouchareb demonstrate how the dream of a white, pure, uncontaminated city is presently «out of focus», while simultaneously confirming that colonialism persists under different forms. In both films the city’s imperial icons are visually deconstructed and resignified by those on whom the metropolitan meanings were traditionally imposed and now reclaim their legitimate space in the new hybrid and polyglot London. Nevertheless, despite the overwhelming presence of the multicultural rhetoric in contemporary visual culture, their focus is not on the carnival of transcultural consumption where questions of class, power and authority conveniently seem to disappear, but on the troubled lives of its agents, who experience the materially local urban reality as inevitably conditioned by the global forces –international war on terror, media coverage, black market, immigration mafias, corporate business– that transcend the local.

    Press release 15 Documentaries Selected for European Film Awards It is with great pleasure that the European Film Academy and EFA Productions announce the EFA Documentary Selection, a list of 15 European documentaries recommended for a nomination for this year's European Film Awards. Ten documentary festivals have suggested to the committee one film each which has had its world premiere at the respective festival’s latest edition. Chosen in co-operation with the European Documentary Network EDN, these festivals are: • Cinéma du Réel (France) • CPH:DOX (Denmark) • Doclisboa (Portugal) • DOK Leipzig (Germany) • IDFA (Netherlands) • Ji.hlava (Czech Republic) • Krakow Film Festival (Poland) • Sheffield Doc/Fest (UK) • Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival (Greece) • Visions du Réel (Switzerland) Based on their recommendations and the films individually submitted, the documentary committee, consisting of EFA Board Member Ira von Gienanth (Germany), festival programmers Marek Hovorka (Czech Republic) and Elena Subirà i Roca (Spain), producer Nik Powell (UK) and commissioning editor Sari Volanen (Finland) decided on the EFA Documentary Selection. EFA Members will now vote for five documentary nominations. Based on these nominations, the EFA Members will then elect the ‘European Documentary 2018’ which will be announced during the awards ceremony on 15 December in Seville. Matt, who is fascinated by Antarctica, is visiting the white continent and recalling his love affair with Lisa. In voice-over, he compares being in Antarctica to being ‘two people in a bed - claustrophobia and agoraphobia in the same place’. Images of ice and the never-ending Antarctic landscape are effectively cut in to shots of the crowded concerts.
