El Camino de Santiago 2018

August 5-11 join The Reverend Jacob Smith and parishioners from -St. George's as they hike El Camino de Santiago. The Way of St. James is one of the oldest in the world and crosses the country of Spain ending in Santiago Cathedral, where the relics of St. James are held. This summer, in six days, we will hike the last 100 kilometers of El Camino.

About El Camino de Santiago

The Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St. James, is an ancient pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James, disciple of , which Christians have been walking for 1200 years. St. James evangelized Spain after Jesus’s ascension, and after his martyrdom in , his disciples brought his body back to Spain. In the 9th century his tomb was uncovered in Santiago, and King Alfonso II made the first pilgrimage from Oviedo to Santiago. Now there are pilgrimage routes to Santiago from all over Spain, and almost 300,000 pilgrims walk the Camino every year.

In 2018, a group of pilgrims from the parish of Calvary-St. George will follow the Way of St. James. We will spend 5 days walking the 100km from the ancient Roman city of Lugo to the cathedral of St. James in Santiago. On the sixth and final day we will attend pilgrim’s mass at the cathedral and spend the afternoon sightseeing in Santiago. Each night we will stay in albergues along the Way (dormitory-style hostels dedicated specifically to pilgrims). The Rev. Jacob Smith and Molly Jane Layton will lead the pilgrimage.

As we walk along the Camino, we will... • See beautiful Spanish countryside • Eat lots of good food • Have sore feet! • Deepen relationships with other CalStG parishioners • Experience God’s grace working in our lives

Warning: We will be hiking a minimum of 16 kilometers (~10 miles) a day.

Route: Camino Primitivo - Lugo to Santiago - 100 kilometers (~62 miles) Fly into Madrid or Santiago and take a train to Lugo
